From the Pastors Desk
Last weekend, someone was overheard in one of the
churches to comment that the new format of our
parish bulleun reminded him of a NSW Legislauve
Council ballot paper. While a bulleun of that size is a
tempung thought, I doubt I could nd enough to ll
one that big. I am afraid well have to seule for the
new format.

The feedback I have received on the new bulleun has
been largely posiuve, and I would thank those
members of the community who have taken the ume
to speak to me about it. All of the feedback will be
considered, and there may be conunuing ne tuning
of the newlook bulleun over the coming weeks.

The coming week sees an important milestone in the
life of our community, with Friday night seeing the
formal inaugurauon of my ministry as Parish Priest. It
is a wonderful ceremony, presided over by our Bishop,
and ritually reminds us all of the various dimensions of
(Connued on page 2)
that ministry. I hope that you might be able to be
present to greet our Bishop and to celebrate this new
era in the life of our Chrisuan community.

Elsewhere in this weeks bulleun youll nd the rst
part of a series on liturgy, and the place of silence
within liturgy. We live in a world in which we are
constantly bombarded by noise in many dierent
forms. We can get so caught up in the busyness and
noise of our lives that we never have ume to stop
and truly listen to what God might be seeking to tell
us. Over coming weeks, as this series conunues, I
invite you to explore the power of silence and its
necessary place as part of our Chrisuan life.

On a personal note, my hearuelt thanks to you for the
messages of congratulauons and assurances of
prayers on my anniversary of ordinauon last week.
Your supportand parucularly your prayersare
much appreciated.

During Lent, Bishop Bill will be moving around the
Diocese to preside over Lenten Liturgies of Hope and
Healing. This will be a wonderful opportunity to
gather with our Bishop in prayer during Lent.

The gathering for the Myall Deanery (of which Forster
Tuncurry is a part) will take place on Friday 2nd March
at Raymond Terrace commencing at 7pm, and it
would be wonderful if parishioners could make the
journey down the highway to pray with our Bishop.

Please note: These liturgies should not be confused
with 2nd Rites of Reconciliaon.

Wun1 is nNvwnv?
Well, its all Greek to me! (leitourgia) is, in
fact, the original Greek word for liturgy.

Liturgy is what we do together each week. We might
mistakenly say its what the priest does for us, but
thats simply not true its what we do together. We
oen call the priest the celebrant, but the preferred
term for his role is the Presider. We all play a part in
celebrang the Eucharist. The priests role is to
preside, that is to lead the celebrauon, culminaung in
his consecratory role in the Eucharisuc Prayer. But his
unique role does not reduce to unimportance the role
of everyone else. We are all celebrants of the
Eucharist, though in dierent ways. The Eucharist is
our common celebrauon. Liturgy is an act of us all.

I would like to reect on just three things that are
important if our liturgy is to be all that it is meant to
be:

(i) rstly, as already stated, liturgy must be an act of
us all we must all take seriously our role as one of
the celebrants of the liturgy. Liturgy is not just what is
happening up on the sanctuary. If we all are
celebrants of the liturgy then the way we enter the
church, take our seats amongst others, greet and/or
speak to them, are not neutral events they are not
things which happen before the liturgy they
themselves are an act of the liturgy. Another term
coming from the Greek used in the early Church for
the celebrauon of the Eucharist was the synaxis, a
word literally meaning the coming together (of the
community). Our synaxis, our coming together, is
liturgy, not a distracuon from it. Likewise the
exchange of the sign of peace before Communion is
not something that happens at the liturgy it is
liturgy, it is an act of liturgy (of which we are
celebrants). We might ask ourselves how well we, as
celebrants, celebrate this rite.

Thus, our auenuve and recepuve listening to the
Word of God, our prayerful entering into all the
movements of the liturgy, the way we enter into the
singingasacommunalactofcelebrangtheliturgy,
are all ways that we are a community celebrang the
liturgy under the presidency of the ministry of the
priest. (to be connued)

Be my protector, O God,
a mighty stronghold to save me.
For you are my rock, my stronghold!
Lead me, guide me, for the sake of your name.

ResponsorialPsalm
R: I turn to you, Lord, in ume of trouble, and you ll
me with the joy of salvauon.

Happy the man whose oence is forgiven,
whose sin is remiued.
O happy the man to whom the Lord
imputes no guilt,
in whose spirit is no guile.

But now I have acknowledged my sins;
my guilt I did not hide.
I said: I will confess
my oence to the Lord.
And you, Lord, have forgiven
the guilt of my sin.

Rejoice, rejoice in the Lord,
exult, you just!
O come, ring out your joy,
all you upright of heart.

In considering the Church as the home of the word,
aenon must rst be given to the sacred liturgy, for the
liturgy is the privileged seng in which God speaks to us in
the midst of our lives; he speaks today to his people, who
hear and respond.
