WELCOME TO OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF NOVEMBER VOLUME -2012

We warmly welcome all our readers for our November newsletter. This is the 52nd volume and we would like to handover with introducing our eco friendly path way. HELP-O has been able to put creative step within every short time and make a good discussion in top-level to grass root level and we introduced much things and developed technology too. HELP-O is facilitating more opportunities to experience in different countries through programs related to different themes. Mid of the month SWITCH Asia Program-2012 held Bangkok in Thailand. HELP-O Chairman/Chief Executive Mr.Chathura Welivitiya participated to this special occasion. HELP O Eco Green Ltd is always trying to reach to new stages with eco friendly system. We are starting to construct a new biogas in Sri Lankan Airlines, Katunayake. HELP O Eco Green Ltd & Sri Lankan Airlines Ltd signed the agreement to implement a bio gas plant. Also in this month HELP-O Eco Green Company carry out constructions of the new bio gas units in Gampaha, Makawita Market, Diyagama Mahinda Rajapaksha Sport Complex. The community network provides financial support to the people who need to develop their self employee. Community empowerment & development are valuable social services of HELP-O by community networking to improve the living condition of them. Program on Biogas Technology for Waste Management

The Programme was held at Sri Lankan Air lines (Pvt) Ltd on the 15th of November on behalf of introducing and explaining Bio gas technology. In that programme we got an implausible affinity of Sri Lankan Air lines staff. Because they comprehended that it is so valuable to manage the picky organic waste while generating alternative energy named biogas which can utilize for specially in cooking and lighting purpose and in generating electricity. Verily bio gas technology is the most sustainable way to manage the waste and to protect the earth by preventing environment pollution and preventing green gas methane emission to air which causes to severe climate changes as increasing of global warming. Actually it was a good opportunity for us to acknowledge about biogas procedure to the staff of one of nature loving institute Sri Lankan Air Line as we are implementing the bio gas plant to provide sustainable solution to their organic waste.

New Waste Management Program with Sri Lankan Arilines-Katunayake Sri Lankan Airlines Ltd is situated in Katunayake. They are willing to implement waste management program within their premises. Normally, as there are more workers there daily waste collection is high. At present they use L.P. Gas as the main energy source in cooking purpose and they expend much money for the energy need in their kitchen. They needed a sustainable solution for their waste and energy problems. So they invited us to implement a biogas plant for their waste management process. On 14th of November 2012 with HELP O Eco Green Ltd and the objective of this project is to implement the biogas plant at Sri Lankan Airlines premises as their request to find a sustainable solution for the daily organic waste generation. The Mr. Chathura Welivitiya, The Managing Director signed to the agreement HELP O Eco Green, and witnesses were Mr. Sampath Athukorala the Mr. Daksitha Prabash the Chemical Analysiss of HELP O Eco Green Ltd & Mr. Rasika Gamage, The Energy Manager and Ms. Sanduni Thudugala, the Executive (Green Projects) of Sri Lankan Airlines Ltd. Actually it was a good opportunity for our waste management program.

Another New Waste Management Program With Kadugannawa Urban Council HELP-O Eco Green Ltd has comprehensive solid waste management programs with various sectors in Sri Lanka. Specially Government and Private Sectors have been able to implement this program very successfully with us. Councils. The project agreed on 20ty November 2012 in the National Solid Waste Management Support Centre in Ministry of Local Government and Government Provincial Council. Specially, JICA Ex-participants Association is supporting successive the project. The capacity of the plant is 18m3 and the objective of the project is to find renewable energy source & reduce energy cost with receiving environmental, economic, social, physical benefits. The Agreement was signed by Mr.Chathura Welivitiya, the Managing Director of HELP-O Eco Green Ltd and Ms.Mangalika Lokuliyanage, the director of National Solid Waste Management Support Centre signed for the Agreement. AWARENESS PROGRAME IN MAYURA ARMY CAMP AMBALANGODA The awareness program in MAYURA army camp Ambalangoda was held on 21st of November 2012. The program was conducted by Ms. Nadeeka Amarasingha and Mr. Daksitha Prabash from HELP-O Eco Green Company. And nearly 50 participants of army camp take place to the program. The main objective of the program was acknowledging them, about proper maintenance of biogas unit. Project Manager, Ms. Nadeeka Amarasinghe was the special lecturer and she explained the harmfulness of environment pollution by irregular waste dumping, technology of the biogas system, advantages of the biogas plant and specially explained the maintaining system of the plant. In the presentation she highlighted biogas plant can only feed by digesting organic waste, and troubles of feeding non digesting materials as metal, glass, polythene, plastic etc. She described the importance of chopping large materials before feeding, also described how to check the biogas pressure of the plant and importance of clearing cooker.etc. After those she explained the importance and utilizing method of marvelous bio fertilizer for cultivation which can use as a hormone, natural fruitful organic fertilizer, insecticide.

Also we answered some questions which were asked by the enthusiastic participants and we gave the manual of biogas plant to make easy the maintenance process. Specially we should thank Colonel Mr. Wasantha Dharmasiri and also we should appreciate whole team of Mayura army camp for the fine organizing and for their great cooperation. They expressed their willingness to implement another biogas plant in their camp and appreciated our service for the country and for the whole world. It is a great pleasure to say we also were encouraged by their valuable comments on our projects.

Enhancing Effort for Mahinda Rajapaksha Sports Complex

As HELP O Eco Green Company has been able to implement lot of bio gas plants in various sectors in Sri Lanka. HELP O Eco Green Company is a well-known company for implementing biogas plants with researching the modern technology . This is actually a great opportunity to HELPO Eco Green Ltd to take hand with government to conserve the environment. In their eco-friendly way the HELP O Eco Green Ltd was invited by the Mahinda Rajapaksha Sports Complex, Diyagama to implement a Biogas plant for organic waste management. 35m3 is the capacity of the designed plant and 650kgs of waste can daily dump in to this plant. Management of the huge Waste collection was the major problem of the Sports Complex and this plant will give a better solution for that by producing biogas and highly active organic fertilizer while bringing an accurate system for waste management. At the moment 90% of whole construction of this bio gas unit is completed and they can experience its benefits in sooner Actually this program is a great conservation for the earth.Because, increasing of global warming, methane gas emission to the air, environment pollution can be reduced through this better solution. Also, this is an one of good innovation process and lot of companies and governmental places are now considering about how to convert their waste to energy and they ready to expend money for this kind of projects.

Great Opportunity to take part SWITCH-Asia Program 2012 SWICTH-Asia program the objective which started in 2007 is to spur a systematic change towards environment and climate- friendly consumption and production in the Asian region by advancing sustainable consumption and production (SCP) practices from demonstration to replication. To achieve this objective, the program works simultaneously on the ground, with producers and consumers, and at the level of policy-making through supporting for formulation and implementation of SCP-related policies. UNEP Switch Asiasustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) th & 13th November 2012, and the occasion congregated conference held on 12 at the conference hall of the plaza Athenee Hotel in Bangkok. government and business leaders will convene in Bangkok, Thailand to discuss the future for sustainable conference is being organized by the United Nations Environment program in conjunction with the EU funded SWITCH Asia Policy Support Component (SWITCH- PSC) as well as in partnership with the Asia Pacific Roundtable on CSP (APRCSP). The effort stems from the active participation of all regions and countries. Also, the many high level government officials were in attendance including the Secretary of climate change commission from the office of the president of the Philippines and the deputy minister of Environment Energy from Maldives. For the HELP-O Chairman/Chief Executive Mr.Chathura Welivitiya participated to this occasion.

The UNEP Asia SCP conference is a rare opportunity to learn from the lesson of past policy failures and successes and develop replicable SCP policies regionally. Also, looked to focus planning, implementing, and vision of Asia SCP in the future.

Japan University Researchers Visit to Review the Community Life Changes in Post Tsunami Period
At the end of last November 2012 Japan researchers from Kansai University & Kyoto University have arrived to HELP-O. Major purpose of the visit is to review the changes of tsunami victims after resettlement in different locations in post tsunami time. Specially, they studied about the community financing system & biogas program which is doing by HELP-O. HELP-O started the community networking system after the tsunami situation to rebuild the life of tsunami victims. It was growing regularly as strong community network up to present co-operative society level. That system was run by community groups & it was a more powerful sign of many villages. This community financing system was very interesting study of both researchers to review how the people are trying to recover the totally disappointed life due to tsunami situation. And also they studied about the biogas systems & discussed about how it is affected to the people life to change the entire globe by reducing organic waste & methane emission reduction. They are trying to implement this biogas system in rural areas in Japan.

How to design Home garden in an Urban Area
At present, home cultivations and gardening are very popular things among people, specially in rural areas. But people who live in urban areas have to face some problems in home gardening. Here are some major problems There are not any enough space for home gardening Business of their life style. Position of areas (environmental pollution)

In a ground breaking study conducted at The urban Design Lab at Colombia University in 2011, researchers concluded that: they are explaining about How to make home gardening in urban areas Rooftops are a vast underused resource that could be transformed for good production. Bureaucratic challenges are major barrier to the expansion of urban farming. Urban farmers are establishing viable businesses by taking advantage of multiple revenue streams. Existing green roof incentive programs have not been design to support rooftop agriculture. The skills and experience being developed by todays rooftop farming pioneers will likely make winder adoption much more feasible in the near future. Urban agriculture functions as a catalyst for larger food system transformations.

In the indoor gardening you can use the empty tins, throwing equipments and etc. You can use an any place in your home. You can cultivate the vegetable as a design for beauty of your home.
PEPARING GARDEN THE PERFECT VEGETABLE

The first thing that you need to do when building your veggie garden is to consider where it will go. You will need an area that gets lot of sun and does not have to compete with the root systems of large trees and shrubs for nutrients. Remember that it is a good idea to only make your garden twice as wide as the length of your arm so you can that it contains. For inspiration see our photo section for a range of garden design ideas. Once you have chosen area, dig the soil over to the depth of a fork. After digging add compost, organic matter and manure to ensure that the soil is rich and nutritious for the soon to be planted veggies. Add some plant tonic conditioner and slow release fertilizer. Now this is all done, you are ready to plant your veggies! Follow the directions given with the seedlings or on the back of the seed packet, and remember to water them in well. Keep up the water for the first few weeks until the plants have established themselves and then go to a schedule of giving them a deep soak a couple of times a week rather than a superficial watering daily. A no dig vegetable garden If you dont have time to prepare the soil correctly, then a no dig garden may be perfect for you. If your chosen site is over existing lawn, then you will need to mow the grass down as much as possible. If you have chosen a hard surface such as old paving, you will need to lay some cushioning organic material such as soil or straw.

ENVIRONMENT
To start your no dig garden, you should lay down a layer of newspaper approximately a quarter of an inch thick. Once you have done this, lay a border around your garden using bricks, wood, rocks or whatever other suitable material you may have to at least a height of eight to ten inches to contain the organic material and discourage weeds. After building the border, put down a layer of Lucerne hay or other type of hay approximately 4 inches thick. On top of this, layer some good organic fertilizer or manure to a thickness of one inch. A six inch thick layer of loose straw should then be laid followed by another layer of fertilizer and then finished off with a four inch thick layer of compost. Now that this is done, just water the garden thoroughly but not to soaking wet. You can then start planting! Just remember to never walk on your no dig

Success woman of Walawwaththa branch in HOLDE Womens co-operative HOLDE Womens co-operative is a one of strong committee for self-employees and poor members in urban areas. Ms. Lakshmi is a mother of two children And her husband hasnt got a permanent job. Ms.Lakshmi is Walawwaththa branch and she lived in a small annex with her family. She is a one of starting members of HOLDE Womens Co-operative. She always participated lot of social works in their village needs. Specially, her husband participates and help to HOLDE Womens co-operative in various opportunities. One of our reporters shared her ideas during this month.
Reporter: How you engaged with our HOLDE Womens co-operative branch?

I joined the HOLDE Womens co-operative seven years ago, after the Tsunami disaster and Im a starting member. We had to faced lot of problems in that duration. I joined this committee to get some support to find solutions to those problems. Mainly we needed to build a house. So I applied for a loan to from our committee. The application was forwarded to CLAFNET. Officers of CLAFNET visited our situation and we obtain a the housing loan just after two month. The loan amount was Rs. 250,000.00. That moment,it was a great pleasure to me. Actually, I would like to thanks CLAFNET & our HOLDE Womens co-operative leaders.
Lakshmi: Reporter: What about your present situation?

I would like to say the HOLDE Womens co-operative is a very valuable committee for people like us. Actually, today I am a proud full women because I have my own house to live happily with my family members.
Lakshmi:

This loan was a great strength for us to built our house and as we are paying the loan accurately we are willing to get another loan to continue the remaining constructions of the house and I should thank our active leaders of our HOLDE Womens co-operative and to every success to our committee .
