Identifying a TV channel

BBC Three is our chosen TV channel for our documentary; this is because it fits in with our target audience, i.e. 16-34. The BBC is a semi-autonomous public service broadcaster that operates under a Royal Charter and a License and Agreement from the Home Secretary, Within the United Kingdom its work is funded principally by an annual television license fee, which is charged to all British households, companies and organisations using any type of equipment to receive live television broadcasts the level of the fee is set annually by the then current Government and agreed by both Houses of Parliament. We also chose BBC Three because we believe that our documentary conforms to Lord Reith Reithism Principles: Inform, Educate and Entertain. OFCOM: Ofcom has certain powers to regulate the BBC's licence fee funded television and radio services aimed at audiences in the UK, but not the World Service which is grant-in-aid funded. Ofcom's Broadcasting Code applies in the following areas:

Protection of under-18s Harm and Offence Avoidance of inciting crime or disorder Responsible approach to religious content Prohibition of use of images of very brief duration Fairness Privacy.

Other TV Channels we considered Channel 4: This was our second choice of TV channel, like BBC Three, it has had many documentaries on it before, ones also about drugs which was partly why we didnt choose Channel 4. Channel 4s target audience is also similar to BBC Three.

ITV 1: ITVs target audience is 25 and over, and very likely to be ABC1; this is the target audience that our documentary doesnt appeal too, which means that if we broadcast on itv1 it is very likely that the show would get low viewership.

BBC One: Not as well known for its documentaries as other channels we have considered, also the target audience is slightly to formal for our documentary, while at BBC Ones post watershed programmes are rather mainstream (Strictly Come Dancing, The Voice etc)

We chose to broadcast our documentary on a Friday, or any weekend day for that matter; due to the fact that the audience will be late teenagers and adults under 35, the likelihood is that this age group is busy during this period.

As previously mentioned, our channel will be BBC Three; it matches our target audience and it also has a track record of documentaries on the channel.

Due to the sensitive nature of our documentary, along with the fact of our target audience, we have decided that our broadcast times would be 9.00pm and later, this is also post watershed (because the topic is drugs).
