Background The Saint Louis Zoo Expansion project is a result of the Saint Louis Zoo Associations purchase of the 13.5-acre former Forest Park Hospital site. The property was purchased with funds from the association (and not from taxpayer revenue).

Did you know the Saint Louis Zoo is a world leader in saving endangered species and their habitats? The Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Institute takes a holistic approach to troubled ecosystems by addressing three key ingredients in conservation success: wildlife management and recovery, conservation science, and support of the human populations that coexist with wildlife.

Why Expand?
The Zoo is currently landlocked and in order for the Zoo to function more efficiently, to grow, and to maintain its world-class status, it needs additional space to expand. Potential program expansion includes: animal exhibit space veterinary / animal nutrition support zoo operations administrative services facilities for research and conservation

Consultant Team
The Saint Louis Zoo has selected SWT Design to lead a team of consultants. Disciplines range from: urban design economic / market analysis public engagement transportation engineering civil engineering planning landscape architecture

Planning Process The planning process is expected to take six to eight months. The framework study area will include the entire Saint Louis Zoo campus and the surrounding areas immediately adjacent.

Why a Framework Plan? This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the Saint Louis Zoo and we want to be sure that we do this RIGHT. Your input is a critical step in this process. The Saint Louis Zoo and its consultant team realize that the acquired property offer new opportunities for expansion and for adding greater value to the surrounding neighborhoods, Forest Park, the City of St. Louis, and the St. Louis region.
