Canadian Mayor remover a lesson for Nigerian politicians Toronto mayor was ordered out of office on Monday 26,

November 2012 after been found guilty of using the city letterhead to fundraise his high-school football team. Mayor Ford was said to have broken the conflict of interest law by taking part in a council vote in which he had money at stake. A mayor was to be removed for soliciting fund to help kids play football and found guilty in improperly solicited lobbyists' donation to his private football charity, this might be seen as a means of goodwill or mere action of favor in some developing world most especially in Africa, particularly Nigeria, that such action might not be linked to corruption. This has been the fundamental factors and an established fact working against the attainment of marked socioeconomic, cultural, educational and political development in the major facets of the countrys economy over time. Many political leaders uses their position as a means of enriching oneself and embezzling government funding which is not pervasive as corruption, holding still to their position and aiming a higher political position. Thus, in any human society, like ours in Nigeria, in government in particular, corruption ensues when an elected representative makes decisions that are influenced by vested interest rather than the moral norms and accepted societal values. Corruption in Nigeria undermines democratic institutions, retards economic development and contributes to government instability. Corruption attacks the foundation of democratic institutions by distorting electoral processes, perverting the rule of law, and creating bureaucratic. One may ask what essentially constitutes corrupt tendencies or practices in human affairs. According to Transparency International (TI), corruption is defined as the abuse of entrusted power for private gain. It hurts everyone who depends on the integrity of people in a position of authority. Similarly, Wikipedia, describes corruption, whether personal or official, as that which, in philosophical, theological, or moral discussions, is spiritual or moral impurity or deviation from an ideal. The encyclopaedia further posits that in an economy, as Nigerias, corruption could be described as payment for services or material which the recipient is not due, under law. Some have equally explained the social cankerworm in such other terms as bribery, kickback, sleaze, or inducement. President and Founder, Oodua Peoples Congress, Dr. Frederick Fasehun, has accused Nigerian leaders of adopting corruption to fight corruption in the country. He said corruption was fast becoming a monster that would destroy the country if the right methods were not adopted to quickly tackle it. According to him, Corruption reigns supreme as a thriving industry and

corruption is fast becoming a monster that will destroy the nation if the right methods are not adopted to quickly tackle it, unfortunately, our leaders keep adopting corruption to fight corruption. What happened to the billions recovered from late former Head of State, Sani Abacha; from former Inspector General of Police, Tafa Balogun; Lucky Igbinedion, James Ibori and the rest? In other to fight the hydra-headed monster called corruption, which is seriously afflicting the Nigerian economy, should not be a lone effort. This is the reason that the present administration certainly requires the support of all patriotic and well-meaning Nigerians to fight corruption towards heralding a new beginning in the scheme of things in the country. President Goodluck Jonathan boldly demonstrated his administrations professed zero-tolerance stance on corruption when he declined to swear in a nominee for the chairmanship of the ICPC, following questions raised by Nigerians about the propriety of the persons nomination and subsequent clearance by the Senate. President Jonathan declared, We will give all the necessary support and encouragement to all the anti-corruption agencies to vigorously enforce the enabling anti-corruption laws. I urge these agencies to do their work fairly but firmly within the ambit of the law without regard to position or status. There shall be no sacred cows. This government will not protect any so-called sacred cows. The wheel of justice must run its full course in tackling anti-corruption cases. Akintunde Adebayo
