Unit of Instruction
Boating Safety Unit EDTECH 506 Forrest Doud

1. Unit Goals (long rangehow does this unit fit with year-long goals?)

This will be an introductory level unit designed to provide students with boating safety knowledge so they are adequately prepared for both their first time on the water and taking more advanced boating safety courses. Goals for this unit will include: 1. Learners can recognize and define general boating terminology as well as the parts of a boat. 2. Learners can identify each type of personal flotation devices and its appropriate use. 3. Learners are able to describe mandatory boating safety gear required for all vessels. 4. Learners can describe boating rules of the road including the rule of give-way and stand-on. 5. Learners can explain the technique for docking a boat in calm water. 6. Learners can describe common dangers for boating and tips for safer boating.

2. Specific ways to relate goal(s) to curriculum (team/department, system and state frameworks) This unit will act as an online companion to courses offered at the CSU Channel Islands Boating Instruction & Safety Center and serve as a pre-requisite for advanced on-site courses. The goals for this unit also relate specifically to county, state, and federal boat operation and water safety requirements/regulations.

3. Characteristics of the students for whom this unit is intended (needs in the cognitive, affective, physical, and social areas) This unit is designed for learners 16 years of age and older. California law requires a person to be at least 16 years of age or older to legally operate a vessel that is powered by a motor with more than 15 horsepower, as well as all personal watercraft (PWCs). The Boating Instruction & Safety Center will be operated by CSU Channel Islands but is a joint collaboration with the County of Ventura. As a result of this partnership learners will consist of members from the public in addition to university students.

4. Students Present Level of Performance and Knowledge (Do the students have the adequate knowledge to complete the unit successfully? What prerequisite skills must the students have to complete the unit content? Include technology skills. Learners must have basic computer skills necessary to navigate a website and complete an online survey. Students will also need to be able to read and comprehend at a basic level.

5. Classroom Layout and grouping of students (Where will the learning take place? How will the room be organized? How will students be grouped (whole group, individuals, pairs, small groups, etc.)

This unit will be a completely online E-Learning activity which takes place on a website. The unit will be designed for individual learners.

6. Introductory procedures (How will you introduce the unit and the goals?) The website will feature and introductory page that explains the dangers that can occur while boating and the importance of boater safety. Unit goals will be related to these examples.

7. Materials and media (any resource, persons or materials: be as specific as possible. Identify resource, its availability, how it is to be used and why. The unit will be delivered entirely online via a course website created in Weebly. Website visuals will be created in Fireworks CS5 and Photoshop CS5 to meet universal design standards. Links to external websites for advanced information not covered by the unit will be included as well. Online survey software will be used for self-assessment needs. Learners will need a working computer with internet access in order to complete the unit.

8. Visuals (although this is part of the materials and media, I want this to be a specific part of your plan). Identify at least EIGHT static graphic visuals (NOT links to video clips or websites, please) that you will be creating and use, their purpose, and design. Visual 1: This is an overview image of the 4 steps to safe boating. Visual 2: This is the use of font to create a visual representation of the term Boating Safety for use as an introduction to boating vocabulary to gain learner interest. Visual 3: This will be a visual showing the different parts of a boat. Visual 4: This will be a visual showing the different types of flotation devices (Type I, II, III, IV, V). Visual 5: This will be a visual reference of the USCG vessel safety gear requirements. Visual 6: This will be a visual demonstrating right of way on the water known as the rule of giveway/stand-on.

Visual 7: This will be a visual showing how to dock a boat in calm conditions.

Visual 8: This will be an image of the top 10 causes of boating accidents and fatalities.

9. Assessment and evaluation of learner understanding (Identify the methods the teacher will use to identify student learning levels and needs. Describe when these will be used during the unit) An online self-assessment will be completed by learners. This assessment will take place after the unit has been completed. 10. Relate assessment instruments to the outcomes stated in the goals. The students will review the results of their self-assessment and determine whether or not they have experienced an increase of knowledge related to unit goals upon completion of the unit.
