The Green Heart Project

Farm-to-School Apprentice
The Green Heart Project is a community-based volunteer organization, agricultural educational program and urban farm that strives to teach students and community-members the knowledge needed to live a sustainable and healthy lifestyle with respect for yourself, your community and the earth. Currently in one elementary school in downtown Charleston, the program is expanding into 3 additional schools in 2013 and is looking for some help to do so! The Green Heart Project is seeking a committed, enthusiastic, hardworking, creative and independently-motivated individual to help install, manage and operate the Projects new school farms. The individual must be committed to the Green Heart Projects mission and goals with an interest in agricultural and farm-to-school. Prior experience in agriculture and/or education is preferred. The individual must be good with youth, comfortable leading groups and manage volunteers. He or she must be willing and able to work in all seasonal and climate-conditions, and have the ability to lift 50 lbs.

Roles and Responsibilities:


Work in conjunction with the program director and College of Charleston interns to manage all aspects of the farm program, including planning, planting, irrigating, harvesting and maintaining the a Green Heart, GAP certified urban farm and school garden Collaborate with local restaurants and school cafeteria in planning and planting vegetables and herbs that cater to their needs Collaborate with students and teachers to develop and maintain a crop schedule/rotation including unit costs and revenues from production Continue to add-value and improve upon the program and urban farm through his or her own ideas

Invaluable experience learning how to manage a fully-operational farm on a micro-level Be a part of developing a sustainable farm-to-school program that will serve as the model for the region and state.
