Section 1
Idioms are expressions that have hidden meanings. Idioms don't mean exactly what the words say. There are two idioms in the first section of The Magic Finger. Read through it again and see if you can find phrases that dont mean exactly what they say. The first idiom is on page 10. Look at the top of the page. It says Mr. Gregg told me to go home and mind my own Ps and Qs. That means he wanted the girl not to bother them. He wanted her to mind her own business. The second one is on page 11. Look at the bottom of the page where it says I saw red. The girl didnt really see red. She was just very mad. That is an expression for saying you are angry. There are many idioms that we use a lot. Here are some: a chip on your shoulder a piece of cake when pigs fly costs an arm and a leg apple of my eye under the weather spitting image cry over spilt milk head over heels hold your horses raining cats and dogs on pins and needles I smell a rat cry wolf

------------------------------------------------------------------------Talk with your teacher and your classmates about what you think these idioms mean. Then, pick one and draw it. See if your classmates can figure out which one you drew.

Section 3: Main idea The main idea of a story is the most important part. All of the little things that happen are called the details. You can usually tell the main idea of a story in one or two sentences. Pretend that you are telling someone about this section of the book (pages 2228) that has never read it before. Write only one or two sentences to tell them the main idea. ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ Look at the sentences at the bottom of the page. Circle the sentence that is the main idea of the story so far. Underline the details. The girl turned her teacher into a cat. The girl got mad at the Greggs because they killed animals so she turned them into ducks. The Greggs werent able to shoot the ducks when they went hunting. Mr. Gregg went outside to get some wood for the fire. The ducks went into the house and shut the door.
