GOOGLE CHROME:

Feature Set: The latest version of Chrome is jam-packed with highly convenient features, including synchronization, tabbed browsing and privacy functions. Using Google account, Chrome can sync bookmarks, browser preferences and extensions so that they are available on any computer once user sign into his account. This is advantageous because it allows user to easily access his own add-ons and preferences regardless of what computer he is using. Its also ideal for households with a single computer. Chromes tabbed browsing, while basic, is another thing the web browser excels at. With a single mouse click, user can rearrange tabs, duplicate tabs and even drag tabs to open new windows. Not only can tabs be isolated, but they also function independently, meaning if one tab crashes, the others are not affected. Lastly, if user open a new tab from an existing one (e.g., clicking on an embedded link), the new tab is placed next to the originating or parent tab, rather than at the end of list of tabs. This makes it much easier to keep related tabs organized and grouped together. Another notable feature of Chrome is its privacy browsing. The browser boasts incognito mode, which doesnt track browsing as user navigate webpages. When a browser in incognito mode is closed, it also deletes cookies and passwords from that session. User can have browsers in normal mode and in incognito mode open simultaneously. Another innovative feature that Google takes from traditional operating systems and applies to internet browsing is a task manager. User can open the online task manager and see which websites and applications are running and how much computer memory they are using. User can even check out the "stats for nerds" section and see detailed information about browser memory usage and the various processes running. Chrome has most of the other standard features including automatic updates, RSS feeds and a password manager. The browser does not have any parental controls and likely wont in future versions. Google has said that it believes there are other ways to monitor internet use, and there are already several third-party applications that exist for monitoring. Security:10 Chrome is designed to keep the users safer and more secure on the web with built-in malware and phishing protection, auto-updates to make sure that the user have all the latest security fixes, and more. When a user navigate to a website suspected of phishing or containing malware, the internet browser displays a warning. The browser also has auto-updates, ensuring security features stay current without any action on user's part, and it employs the sandboxing method. Sandboxing helps block malware

and isolates what happens in one tab from affecting the others, so once user close a tab, that process is completely terminated. Sandboxing is an effective method for preventing malware from installing itself on a computer and monitoring user's online activities or stealing personal information. Speed & Compatibility: Google Chrome is remarkably fast. In fact, the internet browser is the fastest of all major browsers. During our timed trials, Chrome initialized for the first time of the day within seconds, as it did during the subsequent times we launched the web browser. Navigation time is remarkably fast as well. Google has taken initiative in making Chrome very compatible with the internet. Chrome was specifically designed to quickly and efficiently load, display and interact with the vast array of applications on the web, boasting a built-in Flash and PDF reader. Ease of Use: Most internet browsers are built for function over form, but Google Chrome is a web browser that succeeds in both. The layout is clean, intuitive and well organized, and Chrome manages to achieve a level of simplicity other internet browsers lack. Its features are clearly designed for efficiency and ease of use, and users can search and navigate from the same box. Furthermore, the browser allows you to conveniently create shortcuts to web applications a user regularly uses, which can be placed on user's desktop for quick and easy access. We also liked that when a user have multiple tabs open, they get smaller as the user open more and are all still displayed, rather than in a side-scrolling fashion like other internet browsers. Google Chrome is the ideal exemplification of how modern web browsers can and should minimize their footprint on your system resources while remaining flexible, feature-rich and easy to use. Help & Support: Google Chrome has an in-depth help center that provides support in a variety of categories. The help center has resources to help get new users started, and help advanced users fully customize their browsing experience. User can also check on known product issues, browse FAQs, and change language and display settings. Google also provides a help forum where user can post issues, interact with other users and even provide useful feedback for other users experiencing issues.

FIREFOX
Feature Set: Like many other major internet browsers, Firefox has adopted a useful synchronization feature. You can sync your browsing so you can access your history, passwords, bookmarks and more on your desktop or mobile browsers. The browser also has tabbed browsing, allowing you to quickly navigate between webpages in a single window. You can reorder tabs, organize them into customizable groups using the Panorama feature and perform a redo function when you accidentally close tabs. The browser also has a handful of convenience features that make browsing easier and quicker. The find-on-page function is sleek and non-intrusive, allowing you to easily find a word or phrase on a particular webpage. Firefox puts the feature right on the bottom of the browser so you dont have to deal with a pop-up window. The internet browser also has a voice interaction add-on. The feature allows you to browse the internet through simple voice commands. Firefox is an ideal browser for college students and other individuals who conduct research online. Mozilla has developed virtual sticky notes, a feature unique to Firefox. You can add your own notes to specific webpages and access them through the toolbar. You can also access your saved bookmarks, archived browsing history and pinned apps. The pin as app tab feature allows you to save frequently visited websites think Facebook or your web-based email as icons on the toolbar. That way, you can easily access them without opening a new tab. The browsers innovative Smart Location Bar will adapt to your use and preferences. This handy tool makes it easy to return to websites you've previously visited, even if you don't remember the exact URL. It also helps you locate sites based on titles and content. Firefox also includes form complete, a pop-up blocker, a password manager and parental controls. Another nice feature is the drag-and-drop functionality, which allows you to drag text or a link from anywhere on a web page and put it directly into your search bar. A few of the features Firefox doesnt have include thumbnail previews and mouse gestures, or mouse movements that represent specific shortcuts. These would be convenient built-in features to have but arent essential. You can also install extensions compatible with Firefox that enable mouse gestures and voice interaction. Security: Firefox has integrated private browsing; you can easily enable and disable the private mode, browsing seamlessly in complete stealth. Furthermore, unlike other browser

privacy modes, there is no noticeable icon or change to the interface when in private mode. Firefox protects against viruses, spyware, malware, phishing sites and pop-ups. The internet browser also has automatic updates, so your browser is always up-to-date on the latest security fixes. The internet browser also provides customized security settings. You can control the level of scrutiny placed on sites and customize settings for cookies, downloads, passwords and add-ons. Another impressive security feature the internet browser possesses is the one-click site info. You simply click on the site in the address bar to view important safety information. You can easily clear your personal information, including history, cookies, passwords and web-form entries with the click of a button. You can even remove all traces of your visiting a specific site. Speed & Compatibility: Firefox has always been a fast internet browser and now it's even faster. It beats most of the competition, though not all, in terms of speed, and we had no problems loading Firefox or quickly navigating from page to page. Firefox provides a fluid web browsing experience from start to finish and boasts compatibility across the web. Furthermore, Firefox is fully equipped to accommodate multi-touch gestures with OSX and Windows 7. Ease of Use: Similar to our other top-rated internet browsers, Firefox is well organized and intuitive. The browser has an easy-to-use interface stocked with the essentials, but its far from cluttered. Firefox features are powerful and useful, yet simple and accessible. Firefox has several additional features that further improve usability. A fully integrated spell-checker allows users to work directly on the web and still have spell check. Another great function is an automatic session restore. When Firefox reopens, you can pick up where you left off, even if the browser closed unexpectedly or by accident. Session restore can restore text you were writing in an email and even downloads in progress. The Firefox download manager is easy to use and integrates seamlessly with the browser interface. The download manager gives you the ability to pause downloads and then pick up where you left off. This straightforward resume function is even available after a system restart. One thing we were surprised by was Firefox still has an address bar and a search bar, one of the last few internet browsers to separate the two. This doesnt hinder usability, but it does seem a bit outdated, considering other major web browsers have a single bar for both.

Help & Support: Mozilla provides a lot of useful online documentation, including FAQs, a knowledgebase and a tutorial. The knowledgebase is searchable and includes standard help as well as personalized help in the form of live chat with the Firefox community. You can also get direct support via email.

INTERNET EXPLORER
Feature Set: Internet Explorer has several features for better browsing. The browser uses tabs and when you open a new one, it suggests links based on your previous browsing history. We like this feature but its one that a few competitors have had for awhile. The browser also has a single box for both searching and website addresses and full integration with Windows 7. For instance, you can create what the browser calls a jump list, or a list of your most frequently visited websites pinned to your taskbar. Similarly, you can select an individual tab and pin it to your toolbar. For ultimate privacy, Internet Explorer provides private browsing. You can surf the web without the browser retaining a history, cookies or temporary internet files. Internet Explorer also provides a variety of add-ons for a fully customized browsing experience. There are four different categories of add-ons: security, time savers, browsers and entertainment. In each category youll find a number of downloads, each with a description. Most are free, but some youll have to purchase. We were surprised to find the internet browser does not have spell check or an integrated download manager; downloads still appear in a pop-up window. And unlike some of the other internet browsers we reviewed, Internet Explorer is not open-source. Open source software is built and maintained by a network of users. The coding is made available to everyone, and volunteer programmers and testers are encouraged to improve it. Security fixes and updates are more frequent and often more reliable on open source browsers, mainly because the coding is public domain. Security: One thing Internet Explorer boasts that many competing browsers lack is parental controls. You can control the content your kids can access online and use integrated reporting tools to monitor their activity. The internet browser also does a good job of defending your computer against spyware, viruses and phishing schemes. A cross site scripting filter is used to prevent attacks from fraudulent websites attempting to steal personal and financial information. Internet Explorer also utilizes sandboxing, a security technique in which all the browser tabs function as independent processes. This prevents a crashed tab from taking down the entire browser. Despite these efforts, Internet Explorer has been marred by security vulnerabilities. Since it is the most common internet browser, hackers and malicious websites target Internet Explorer more than other browsers and often take advantage of its security loopholes.

Speed & Compatibility: Internet Explorers speed is highly competitive. It isnt quite the fastest internet browser we reviewed, but launching the application and navigating between pages took under five seconds. We also did not experience any compatibility issues, as the browser supports all current and emerging web standards. Ease of Use: Similar to our other top-notch internet browsers, this one is clean and easy to use. Basic web navigation is intuitive, and the browsers navigation controls are simplified and seamless. One thing we liked about Internet Explorer was its Notification Bar. Instead of dialog boxes opening in separate windows, all notification messages are consolidated in the Notification Bar, placed at the very bottom of the window. You dont have to act on the notifications immediately; they remain in the bar until you choose to take action. Help & Support: Internet Explorer has by far the best help and support we came across while reviewing internet browsers. On its website youll find in-depth documentation, tutorials and FAQs. You can conveniently search the online resources by keyword. Internet Explorer is also one of the only internet browsers we tested that is supplemented with direct technical support; Microsoft provides personal assistance via email and telephone.

Document Object Model Introduction Javascript is mostly used to provide a means for your visitors to interact with your web page. In order to be able to do this we need to have some means by which our Javascript program can access the component parts of the web page. The means that we use is calledc the Document Object Model. Basically what this provides is a collection of predefined objects that correspond to the component parts of the browser window and the web page being displayed that the Javascript program can reference in order to interact with the browser window and the page displayed within it. What is the DOM? The document object model provides a mapping for some or all of the various component parts of the browser/web page into objects that your Javascript program can access. Many of the simplest objects are mapped the same way in all browsers that support Javascript however the earlier browsers only supported accessing a small selection of the component parts of the web page and the access to the rest of the web page has been only partially implemented in some browsers and has also been implemented in different ways in different browsers. Let's start by looking at some of these simpler objects defined by the Document Object Model. We actually introduced one such obect right back in the first tutorial. The document object refers to the current web page. Right from the very beginning we have been using thewrite() method with this object to output from our Javascript program into the web page. Actually the objects within the Document Object Model form a heirarchy wit the browserwindow being the top level so strictly speaking the current page should be referred to aswindow.document but in most cases we can leave off the window reference and the current window will be assumed. The objects within the window that are accessible in most cases are document which is the current web page, location which is the address of the current web page (its URL), andhistory which is a record of the pages previously visited. There are a number of other objects that we can reference but these vary between the different Document Object Models. We will discuss how to get around this problem of different browsers using different DOMs in the next few tutorials.

Another object that is separate from the window object in some browsers but is considered to be within it in other browsers is the navigator object. Since we can leave the window reference off of the front anyway, we can access this object the same way in different browsers. In fact what this object refers to is the browser itself and the properties that we can access within this object include appName which tells us which browser the browser claims to be, appVersion which tells us which version of that browser it is claiming to be, anduserAgent which contains more detailed information about the browser and which operating system the browser thinks is running. Why did I say "that the browser claims to be" rather than "that the browser is"? Well some browsers allow the person using the browser to change these values so that the browser reports itself as a completely different browser than it actually is. This is what is known as browser spoofing.

DOCUMENT OBJECT MODEL:

The DOM is a W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) standard. The DOM defines a standard for accessing documents like HTML and XML: "The W3C Document Object Model (DOM) is a platform and language-neutral interface that allows programs and scripts to dynamically access and update the content, structure, and style of a document." The DOM is separated into 3 different parts / levels:

Core DOM - standard model for any structured document XML DOM - standard model for XML documents HTML DOM - standard model for HTML documents

The DOM defines the objects and properties of all document elements, and the methods (interface) to access them.

Web browsers usually use an internal model similar to the DOM in order to render a document (such as an HTML page). The DOM APIs are also used to inspect or modify a Web page from JavaScript code. In other words, the Document Object Model is the way JavaScript sees the browser state and the HTML page it contains. When an HTML page is rendered in a browser, the browser parses the markup (e.g. HTML), downloaded from the web-server into an in-memory DOM. The DOM is used to construct additional internal structures used to display the page in the browser window.

The nodes of every document are organized in a tree structure, called the DOM tree. The topmost node in the DOM tree is the Document object. Each node has zero or more children. An example of a DOM tree is shown below: |-> Document |-> Element (<html>) |-> Element (<body>) |-> Element (<div>) |-> text node |-> Anchor |-> text node |-> Form |-> Text-box |-> Text Area |-> Radio Button |-> Check Box |-> Select |-> Button

CKEditor is a text editor to be used inside web pages. It's a WYSIWYG editor, which means that the text being edited on it looks as similar as possible to the results users have when publishing it. It brings to the web common editing features found on desktop editing applications like Microsoft Word and OpenOffice. CKEditor provides a strong and rich JavaScript API, making it possible to extend it to fit all needs. You can even consider that it has too much features, and removing them is even easier. Fully compatible One of the strongest features in CKEditor is its almost unlimited compatibility. It's a JavaScript application, so it simply works with all server technologies, just like a simple textarea. In the browser side instead, it has been developed to be compatible with the browsers that dominate the market, namely Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari and Opera. Even the old Internet Explorer 6 is compatible with.
