Getting Flank Players into the Attack (Chelsea)

ORGANISATION: Set-up a 45x30yrd grid, with 6 gate goals with small goals (or poles/flags) approxiamtely 3 yrds in width. 2 teams play 6vs6 in different coloured pinnies in the central area + 2 full backs who play on the sides of the area. The full back players can move anywhere up and down the sidelines and play for whichever team has possession of the ball in their repspective zones (A and B). INSTRUCTIONS: * Two of the teams compete in the playing area and attempt to score passing into the other teams gate goals. * The team that has possession of the ball can play out to either full back. * If the attacking team looses possession of the ball they start defending their gate goals. * If at any point the ball goes out of play, the team not responsible for playing it out gathers another ball from their end line. Diagram 4 - 1-2 Combinations in Central Areas

PROGRESSIONS: 1) None. VARIATIONS: 1) Addition of Neutral player to facilitate possession. Also the Full Backs on receiving a pass are allowed to dribble infield (and score). When possession is lost the Full Backs return to their outside zones.

Remove the gate goals and have the teams score by dribbling across the end line. 2) Diagram 5 - Addition of Neutral and Allowing the Full Backs infield.

NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS: This game should help increase a teams ability to possess the ball and also look to switch play. it also encourages teams to use their full backs in the attacking phase. Develops intelligent and pro-active players who are aware of where the space is when in possession.
