become aware of many of your mistakes.
Excellence of Durd Sharf

Four Narrations about the Blessings of An
(1) No Insects in Grave
The beloved and blessed Prophet
,

_.

.
said, The
one who utters An in order to gain awb is like the martyr

draggled in blood and when he dies, there will be no infliction
of insects in his body in the grave (i.e. his body will remain safe
from insects). (Attarghb Wattarb, V1, P112, Dr-ul-Kutub-ul-Ilmiyya,
Beirut)
(2) Domes of Pearls
The most exalted Prophet
,

_.

.
said, I went in to
the Heaven where I saw domes of pearls, its dust was of musk.
I asked, O Jibrl! For whom these (domes) are? He replied,
For the Imm (the one who leads al) and Main (the
one who utters An) of your Umma. (Kanz-ul-Umml, V7, P287,
ad 20896, Dr-ul-Kutub-ul-Ilmiyya, Beirut)
(3) Previous Sins are forgiven
The beloved and blessed Prophet
,

_.

.
said, The
one uttering An for five al due to faith with the intention
of gaining awb, his previous sins will be forgiven, and the
one leading his companions in five al due to faith for
gaining awb, his previous sins will be forgiven. (Kanz-ul-
Umml, V7, P287, ad 20902, Dr-ul-Kutub-ul-Ilmiyya, Beirut)
(4) Fish Also Seek Forgiveness
A blessed ad says, Everything including even the fish in
river ask supplication of forgiveness for those uttering An.
When the Main utters An, the angels also repeat; when
he finishes, the angels keep asking the supplication of forgiveness
for him up to the Judgment Day. The one who dies in the state

of being a Main will not be tormented in his grave, and he
remains safe from the agonies at the time of death, the hardness
and narrowness of the grave. (Derived from: Tafsr-e-Sra-e-Ysuf-lil-
Ghazl translated, P21, Markaz-ul-Auliy, Lahore)
Excellence of Replying to An
The Holy Prophet
,

_.

.
once said, O women!
Whenever you hear Bill uttering An and Iqmat, you should
also say what he says as All

.
will write one hundred
thousand good deeds for you for every Kalima, raise your one
thousand ranks and will remove your one thousand sins.
Listening to this, the women asked, This (awb) is for women;
what is for men? The Holy Prophet
,

_.

.
replied,
There is double (awb) for men. (Kanz-ul-Umml, V7, P287, ad
21005, Dr-ul-Kutub-ul-Ilmiyya, Beirut)

Earn 30 Million and 24 Hundred Thousand Good
Deeds
Dear Islamic brothers! How enormous Alls mercy is! How
easy He

.
has made it for us to earn good deeds, get our
ranks raised and get our sins forgiven, but regretfully, we are
heedless despite so many facilitations. The detail of the excellence
of Ans reply mentioned in the foregoing ad is as follows.

are two Kalimt. The whole An consists

of 15 Kalimt. If an Islamic sister replies to one An, i.e. she
says what the Main says, she will get 15 hundred thousand
Blessings of An
4
good deeds, her 15 thousand ranks will be raised and her 15
thousand sins will be removed. There is double awb for
Islamic brothers. In the An of Fajr,

is
also said twice, so there are 17 Kalimt in Fajr An. Therefore,
the woman replying to Fajr An will get 17 hundred thousand
good deeds, her 17 thousand ranks will be raised and 17 thousand
sins will be forgiven, and all this awb will be doubled for the
Islamic brothers. In Iqmat,

is also said twice,

so there are 17 Kalimt in Iqmat, and so the awb of the
reply to Iqmat is equal to that of Fajr An. In short, if any
Islamic sister succeeds in replying the An as well as Iqmat
five times daily, she will attain 10 million 62 hundred thousand
good deeds, her one hundred 62 thousand ranks will be raised
and her one hundred 62 thousand sins will be forgiven and
Islamic brothers will get double awb. In other words, he will
gain 30 million 24 hundred thousand good deeds, his 3
hundred 24 thousand ranks will be raised and his 3 hundred
24 thousand sins will be forgiven.
The Replier of An Entered the Heaven
arat Sayyidun Ab urara

,
narrates that a man
whose no major pious deed was known died. The beloved and
blessed Rasl
,

_.

.
said to the blessed companions

_.

,
, Do you know All

.
has made him enter the
Heaven. The people became surprised as apparently he did
not have any major deed. Therefore, one of the companions
went to that persons house and asked his widow as to what his
Blessings of An
5
special deed was. She replied, Although I do not know any of
his special deed, he would reply to An whenever he used to
hear it, whether it was day or night. (Derived from: Ibn-e-Askir,
V40, P412-413, Dar-ul-Fikr, Beirut)
May All

.
bless him and forgive us for his sake.
The Method of Replying to An and Iqmat
The Main should utter the Kalimt of An with pauses.

(when uttered together without a pause) are

considered one Kalima. After uttering this, he should take a
pause for the amount of time in which the replier can reply.
Not taking the pause is Makr and therefore, repeating such
An is Mustaab. (Durr-e-Mukhtr, Rad-dul-Mutr V2, P66) The
replier should say

during the pause of the

Main, i.e. when the Main is silent. He should reply to
the other Kalimt in the same way. When the Main says

the first time, the replier should say:

.
|

,. |

.

May Alls Durd upon you Y RaslAll
,

_.

.
!
(Rad-dul-Mutr, V1, P293, Muaf-al-Bb Egypt)
When the Main utters these words again, the replier should
say:
Blessings of An
6

, |

,.

,
Y RaslAll
,

_.

.
! You are the solace of my eyes.
(ibid)
Each time, make thumb nails touch eyes and say:

,.| .

,

.

Y All

.
! Benefit me from my faculties of listening and seeing.
(ibid)
Whoever does this, the Holy Prophet
,

_.

.
will
make him enter Heaven accompanying him. (ibid)
In reply to

and

say

each time, and it is better to say both (what the Main says
as well as

) and also add:
|

.`

:.

_.

Whatever All

.
wanted happened and whatever He did not
want did not happen.
(Durr-e-Mukhtr, Rad-dul-Mutr, V2, P82, Alamgr, V1, P57)
In reply to

, say:
Blessings of An
7

.
.

.
You are true and pious and have said right.
(ibid, P83)
Replying to Iqmat is Mustaab. Its reply is also the same. The
only difference is that in reply to

the replier
should say:
|.

..

| .

.|

,|

.
|

.|

,.

,|

,
May All

.
persist it until sky and earth exist!
(Alamgr, V1, P57)
Fourteen Madan Pearls of An
1. If the primary Jamat of five Far al including Jumua
is held in the Masjid at stipulated time, it is Sunnat-e-
Makkada to utter An for them, and its emphasis is
like that of Wjib. If An is not uttered, all the people
over there will be sinner. (Durr-e-Mukhtr, Rad-dul-Mutr, V2,
P60)
2. If somebody offers al at home in the city, the An of
the local Masjid will be enough but it is Mustaab to utter
An. (ibid, P62)
3. If somebody is out of the city or in a village, orchard or
farm, the An of the city/village will be enough provided
these places are near the city/village; but it is better to say
Blessings of An
8
An. However, if these places are not near, that An will
not be enough. Here, nearness means that the voice of
An (given in city/ village) could reach there. (Alamgr,
V1, P54)
4. If a traveller did not utter An or Iqmat or both, it is
Makr; if he utters only Iqmat, there is no repugnance,
but it is better to say An also, whether he is alone or
with other companions. (Durr-e-Mukhtr, Rad-dul-Mutr, V2,
P78)
5. Utter An after the time has started. If it is uttered before
the time begins or if the time starts during the An, the
An should be repeated in both the cases. (Alamgr, V1,
P54) The Main should make a habit of ascertaining the
timings of al with the help of timetable. At some
places, the Main starts uttering An before the time
begins. It is a Madan request to the Imms as well as the
Masjid committee to keep an eye on this matter.
6. It is Makru for women to say An and Iqmat whether
they are offering al (within its time) or Qa (after the
elapsing of its stipulated time). (Khula-tul-Fatw, V1, P48)
7. It is Makru-e-Tarm for women to offer al with Jamat.
(Al-Bar-ur-R-aiq, V1, P614)
8. A clever child can also utter An. (Alamgr, V1, P54)
9. Though uttering An without Wu is valid, it is Makr to
do so. (Marqil fal ma shiya-tu-aw, P199/ Fatw-e-
Razavyya, V5, P373)
Blessings of An
9
10. The An uttered by a eunuch, transgressor even if he is a
scholar, an intoxicated person, a mad person, the one on
whom Ghusl is due and unwise child is Makr. Therefore,
the An uttered by any of the aforementioned people
should be repeated. (Durr-e-Mukhtr ma Rad-dul-Mutr, V2,
P75)
11. If the Main is the Imm as well, it is preferable. (ibid
P88/Alamgr, V1, P54)
12. An should be uttered aloud outside the Masjid facing
the Qibla with the fingers inside the ears but raising the
voice of An beyond ones strength is Makr. (Alamgr,
V1, P55)
13. Say

having turned face towards the right side

and

towards the left side even if the An is

not for al e.g. the An uttered into the ear of a newly
born baby. Turn only the face, not the whole body. (Durr-
e-Mukhtr ma Rad-dul-Mutr, V2, P66) Some Mainn start
moving their face slightly having uttered the word

. It is
not correct. The correct method is to first turn face to the
right or left side completely and then start saying the
word

.
14. It is Mustaab to say

after

in Fajr An. (Durr-e-Mukhtr ma Rad-dul-Mutr, V2, P67) If it
is not uttered, An will still be valid. (Qnn-e- Sharat, P77)
Blessings of An
10
Nine Madan Pearls about Replying to An
1. Apart from the An of al, other An such as the one
uttered at the time of the birth of a baby should also be
replied. (Rad-dul-Mutr, V2, P82)
2. Muqtads should never reply to the An of Khuba. It is
most cautious to do so. However, there is no harm if the
reply to An or supplication (between two Khubt) is
made in heart without uttering any word with the tongue.
However, if the Imm replies to the An or makes
supplication even with the tongue, it is quite permissible.
(Fatw-e-Razavyya, V8, P301.330)
3. There is a commandment to reply for the hearer of An.
(Alamgr, V1, P57) A Junub (the one who is to do Ghusl
because of intercourse or nocturnal emission) should also
reply to An. However, a woman undergoing menses or
post-natal bleeding, audience of Khuba, performers of
funeral al, those having intercourse or those passing
stool or urine need not to reply. (Marqil fal ma shiya-
tu-aw, P203)
4. When An is going on, one should stop every type of
work such as talking, Salm, reply to Salm and even
recitation of the Holy Qurn etc. for the duration in
which An is being uttered. Listen to the An
attentively and make its reply. Do also the same while
Iqmat is going on. (Durr-e-Mukhtr ma Rad-dul-Mutr, V2,
P86\Alamgr, V1, P57)
Blessings of An
11
5. It is safer to stop walking, eating, picking or laying a utensil
or other things, playing with children, talking by gestures
etc. during An.
6. The one talking during An is in the danger of losing
faith at the time of death. (Bar-e-Sharat, Part 3, P36, Madna-
tul-Murshid, Bareilly Sharf)
7. If anybody hears the An while walking, it is better for
him to stop walking and remain silent for the amount of
time in which An is uttered and reply to the An.
(Alamgr, V1, P57)
8. If anybody hears more than one An, he is required to
reply to the first An only but it is better to reply to all of
them. (Durr-e-Mukhtr ma Rad-dul-Mutr, V2, P82)
9. If anybody did not reply during the An and much time
has not passed yet, he should still reply. (Rad-dul-Mutr, V2,
P81)
Seven Madan Pearls about Iqmat
1. It is better to say Iqmat just behind the Imm in the
Masjid; if it is not conveniently possible to utter Iqmat
just behind the Imm, then it should be uttered at the
right side. (Derived from: Fatw-e-Razavyya, V5, P372)
2. Iqmat is a more emphatic Sunna than An. (Durr-e-
Mukhtr ma Rad-dul-Mutr, V2, P68)
3. It is Mustaab to reply to Iqmat. (Alamgr, V1, P57)
Blessings of An
12
4. Say the words of Iqmat quickly without pauses in between.
(Durr-e-Mukhtr ma Rad-dul-Mutr, V2, P68)
5. Turn face to the right and left side whilst saying

and

respectively during Iqmat

as well. (Durr-e-Mukhtr ma Rad-dul-Mutr, V2, P66)
6. Iqmat is the right of the person who uttered An.
However, with the consent of the utterer of An, someone
else can also say Iqmat. If the Iqmat is uttered without
the permission of the Main (the one who uttered
An) and he resented it, then it is Makr. (Alamgr, V1,
P54)
7. If a person comes during Iqmat, it is Makr for him to
wait whilst standing, instead, he should sit down. Similarly,
the people who are already sitting in the Masjid should
also keep seated; all should stand when the Mukabbir says

. This ruling also applies to the Imm. (ibid,

P55)
Eleven Mustaab Occasions for Uttering An
1. In the ears of infant.
2. In the ears of a grieved person.
3. In the ears of an epileptic patient.
4. In the ears of a furious and grumpy person.
5. In the ears of an irritating animal.
6. In the severity of fighting.
Blessings of An

7. Eruption of fire.
8. After the burial of dead body.
9. Defiance of Jinn (or when a Jinn captures someone)
10. If someone forgets the way in the forest and there is
nobody to show the way and
11. During the period of Epidemic, it is Mustaab to utter
An. (Durr-e-Mukhtr ma Rad-dul-Mutr, V2, P50)

To Utter An in the Masjid is Contrary to Sunna
Nowadays, the trend of uttering An in the Masjid has developed,
which is in contradiction to Sunna. It is stated in Alamgr
etc. that An should be uttered outside the Masjid, not inside.
(Fatw-e-Alamgr, V1, P55) Imm of Al-e-Sunnat, Revivalist of

arat

,
further says uttering An in the Masjid is a
desecration of the Masjid as well as that of the court of All

.
. (ibid, P411) The place outside the veranda of the Masjid
where shoes are taken off is not considered as a part of the
Masjid and therefore, uttering An there is absolutely in
accordance with the Sunna. (ibid, P408) The second An of
Blessings of An
14
Jumua which is uttered nowadays (before the Khuba) in
the Masjid in front of the pulpit of the Imm is also contrary to
Sunna. The second An of Jumua should also be uttered
outside the Masjid but the Main should be in straightness
of the Imm. (Fat-ul-Qadr, V2, P29)
Earn the Reward of 100 Martyrs
Al-arat

,
says, Although the revival of Sunna is
one of the specific duties of the scholars, there is a general
commandment for such Muslims for whom it is possible. The
Muslims of every city should revive the Sunna of uttering
An including the second An of Jumua outside the
Masjid in their cities or at least in their Masjid and earn the
reward of 100 martyrs. (Fatw-e-Razavyya with references, V5,
P403) The Holy Prophet
,

_.

.
said, Whoever holds
onto my Sunna firmly at the time of Fasd (deviation from
religion) of my Umma, he will attain the reward of 100
martyrs. This ad has been narrated in the book uud by
Baak. (Mishkt-ul-Mab, P30) For further details about this,
go though the fifth volume of Fatw-e-Razavyya called Al-
An wal Iqma. (Published by Raz Foundation).

For a pause between Durd Sharf and An, make the following
announcement:
In the honour of An, stop talking and other activities and
earn hoard of good deeds by replying to An.
Then, utter An. Likewise, make the following announcement
between Durd and Iqmat: Make the intention of Itikf, if
you have a mobile phone, please switch it off. I have made the
Madan request of reciting Tasmiya and Durd Sharf before
An and Iqmat in the desire of earning perpetual reward. As
for the suggestion of a pause (between Durd Sharf and
An/Iqmat), it is taken from Fatw-e-Razavyya. Therefore,
replying to a question, Imm-e-Al-e-Sunnat

,
said,
There is no harm in reciting Durd Sharf before Iqmat but
there should be a pause between them or the tone of Durd
Sharf should be so different from that of Iqmat (for example,
the sound of Durd Sharf should be quieter than that of
Iqmat) that there should be a clear-cut distinction between
them and people should not regard Durd as a part of Iqmat.

Satanic Whisper
As Durd Sharf did not use to be recited prior to An during
the apparent life of the Holy Prophet
,

_.

.
as well as
in the reign of the first four blessed caliphs, doing that is a
misleading innovation and a sin.

Rebuttal of this Satanic Whisper
If the principle is accepted that doing any such act not done in
that blessed era is a misleading innovation and a sin, the whole
existing system will be distorted. Just 12 examples out of innumerable
ones are being presented making it clear that these acts were
not performed in that era, but have been adopted by every one
in the present era.
1. ajjj Bin Ysuf introduced diacritical marks in the Holy
Qurn in the year 95A.H.
2. He also introduced the use of full stops at the end of each
ya.
3. Publication of the Holy Qurn in printed form.
4. In past, there used to be no arch in the centre of the
Masjid for the Imm to stand. During the reign of Wald
Marwn, Sayyidun Umar bin Abdul Azz

,

introduced it which is now found in every Masjid.
5. Six Kalimt.
6. arf and Naw.
7. Knowledge of ad and its different kinds.
Blessings of An
17
8. Dars-e-Nim.
9. Four orders of Sharat and arqat.
10. Verbal intention of al.
11. The pilgrimage of ajj by air.
12. Jid with the latest scientific weapons.
In the present era, no body regards any of the aforementioned
acts as a sin despite the fact that they did not exist in that
blessed era, so why only reciting Durd Sharf on the beloved
Prophet
,

_.

.
before An and Iqmat is considered
a sin! Remember! The absence of the proof of impermissibility
in any matter is itself a proof of its permissibility. Without
doubt, every such new act which Shara did not prohibit is a
good innovation and absolutely permissible and, it is an
undeniable fact that the recitation of Durd Sharf before An
was not forbidden in any ad. Therefore, absence of prohibition
automatically led to permission. The Holy Prophet

_.

.
,

,
himself expressed the persuasion of innovating good
things in Islam. Therefore, a ad mentioned in the chapter
Kitb-ul-Ilm of a Muslim says:

,|

,.

,
|

,.

_
:

.

Whoever promoted any good method among the Muslims and
after him it was acted upon, the reward of the followers will also be
Blessings of An
18
written in the book of deeds of the person who started it and the
reward of the followers will not be reduced.
(a Muslim, V2, P341)
In other words, whoever promotes any good act in Islam deserves
great reward. Similarly, without any doubt, the fortunate person
who developed the trend of reciting Durd before An and
Iqmat also deserves perpetual reward. He as well as the Muslims
acting on that act till the Day of Judgement will attain reward
without any reduction in any ones reward.
Here, a question may arise in someones mind as to what the
following blessed ad means:

[Every innovation is a heterodoxy and every heterodoxy leads
to hell]. (Mishkt Sharf, P30) What does this ad imply?
Beyond doubt, the foregoing ad is true. In fact, the word
Bidat mentioned in the ad refers to Bidat-e-Sayyia,
(misleading innovation) and indeed every Bidat that contradicts
or removes a Sunna is a misleading innovation.
Therefore, Sayyidun Sheikh Abdul aq Muaddi Dilv

,
writes, Any Bidat that complies with the principles
of Sunna and does not contradict the Shara or Sunna is a
Bidat-e-asana. The Bida that contradicts Shara and Sunna
is a Bidat-e-Dallat, i.e. a misleading innovation. (Ashia-tul-
Lamt, V1, P125)
