TRADESMEN AND TRADE BETWEEN SREM AND

THE COUNTY OF ABAC FROM 1815 UNTIL 1833
SUMMARY
The problem of trade between Austria and Turkey, subsequently between Austria
and Serbia, from the end of the 18th century up to the middle of the 19th century, drew
attention of historians. This was particularly interesting during the First Serbian
Uprising, when Dimitrije Puljevi from Mitrovica stood as a prominent figure. Prince
Milo Obrenovi had controlled the complete trade in Serbia since 1815. Hence, in the
County of abac, it was dominated by Jevrem Obrenovi and those who befriended the
Obrenovi family. Nonetheless, certain regulations concerning the trade were made:
grants given to tradesmen and trading associates if they pay taxes and control over
cattle exportation and importation. One of the first measures undertaken by prince
Milo was to prohibit exportation of lean pigs to Austria.
Tradesmen from Srem were gradually being superseded by those from Serbia.
Consequently, on the list of tradesmen from the County of abac in 1832, only three
of twenty seven were from Srem.

WHEN DID ROSTISLAV MIHAILOVI,

THE GOVERNER OF MAVA, PASS AWAY?
SUMMARY
The time of death of Rostislav Mihailovi, governer of Mava, is not only a
contribution to the biography of this illustrious Russian prince, but it is also interwoven
with a number of important political affairs in the southeastern Europe at the beginning
of the 1260s. Historians place the time of Rostislavs death between the years of
1261 and 1264. Terminus ante quem for the death of Rostislav is mentioning him as
deceased (quondam) on July 15, 1264 in a papal bull of Pope Urban IV. On the other
hand, historians noticed long ago that Rostislav had not been mentioned as actively
participating in the war of the dinasties during 1262 (and later on) between his father-in
-law, the Hungarian king Bela IV and Rostislavs brother-in-law, young king Stefan. In
the well-known confirmation of the peace treaty by young king Stefan from December
5, 1262, Rostislavs eldest son, duke Mihailo, who apparently had a certain teritory
under control, was presented as Stefans ally. Furthermore, it is not known whether
Rostislav took part in the Hungarian foray to Bulgaria (1261), although he had had
significant influence over the conditions in the country until the foray. Regarding
these arguments, a group of historians opted for 1262 or the end of 1261 as the year
Rostislav had died. However, Vsevolod Prokofiev reasonably discerned that in a chart
by the Hungarian king Bela IV dated April 13, 1264, in the descriptions of previous
war credits of nobleman magister Laurentius, Rostislav (still) had not been mentioned
as a dead person. As a matter of fact, it is the description of the events from 1245, but
it was not, as it is known, a copy of some previous formal chart, and the royal office
would have probably had to determine that kings son-in-law and associate, at the
moment of the issuing of the document, was not alive. In the text of the chart, with
the same events, Danilo Romanovi, the governer of Galicia and Volinia, was also
mentioned. According to historians, he died in 1264, as well, probably in the summer.

34

With certain caution, this chronology can be accepted that the governer of Mava,
Rostislav Mihailovi, died after April 13 and certainly before July 15, 1264. It is possible
that Rostislav suffered from a severe and long illness which had kept this brave warrior
away from the battlefield. Rostislavs departure and lack of experience of his young
sons had influence in Hungary and solidified the positions of young king Stefan. It
also influenced the relations between Hungary and other surrounding countries
Serbia, at the first place, whose monarch Uro I, as early as 1268, conquered Mava
for a brief period of time.

POLITICIANS OF CIVIL ORIENTATION

IMPRISONED IN SREMSKA MITROVICA
(19441955)
SUMMARY
After the Second World War was over, the Yugoslav Communist Party suppresed
all other parties and introduced one-party system in the country. In order to achieve
this goal as well as prevent their opponents from acting, new authorities enforced a
series of law trials in which numerous eminent pre-war politians were sentenced to
prison. The prison in Mitrovica was one of the places where these people served their
sentence.
Former kings regents, Ivo Perovi and Radenko Stankovi, were sent to Mitrovica
as they were accused of the governmental activities just before the War broke out, i.e.
they were accused of signing the Tripartite pact. Exhausted and ill, Stankovi died
soon after having been released from prison.
Another group of politicians were those accused of collaboration with the oppressors.
That is how former ministers Lazar Markovi and Kosta Kumanudi found themselves
in Mitrovica, as they participated in the trial of Draa Mihailovis group.
Kosta Kumanudi returned to prison, accompanied by former banate governer Velimir
Popovi, as they were accused of forming illegal political board which performed
activities against the country. Velimir Popovi died in prison on August 14, 1953 while
Kosta Kumanudi was released from prison after more than six years of sentence.
Next group of convicts were members of different anti-communist youth organizations.
As a member of Serbian National Revolutionary Youth, Dimitrije orevi eventaully
came to prison as well as Borislav Peki who was a political secretary of the Main
board of an illegal anti-communist organization belonging to the Union of Democratic
Youths of Yugoslavia.
Milo Trifunovi, the prime minister of the exiled government, found himself in
Mitrovica as well, convicted for espionage. Due to efforts of a foreign agentry, he was

69

released from prison after having spent a year in it.

The law trial against Dragoljub Jovanovi best represents how far the communist
authorities were capable of going fighting their political opponents. Dragoljub Jovanovi
was secretary general of Peoples Peasant Party, which operated within Peoples
Front. His main guilt was retaining the individuality of his Party and the fact that, in
the Parliament, he critizisied different laws he deemed destructive to the progress of
the country.
During his sentence, politician and lawyer Dragi Maksimovi also died in prison.

THE CHURCH OF SAINT ARCHANGELS

MICHAEL AND GABRIEL IN LAARAK DURING
THE 18TH CENTURY
SUMMARY
From The Great Vienna War (16831699) until the 1860s, the territory of Laarak
used to be significantly migratory. After the war, Laarak had been devastated and
uninhabited, but gradually, people began populating it and it was incorporated into
Odeskalkis manor. Eventually, in 1745, Laarak became a part of the Military border
and its Petrovaradin regiment. To many migrants, Laarak represented a transitory
station while searching for a better place to live in, but some families decided to establish
their homes precisely in Laarak. As the population grew larger, being exclusively of
Serbian nationality, a need for an ortodox church emerged. During the 18th century,
people in Laarak built three othodox temples, two poorly constructed, in 1717 and 1731
and the one in 1766 that still exists. Each church was consecrated to Saint Archangels
Michael and Gabriel. As the consistory was gaining economical strength, the church
was no longer a poorly constructed building, as mentioned previously, with humble
furnishings. It became a baroque building, with an iconostasis of a remarkable artistic
expression and baroque-rocaille wall paintings, one of the most valuable wall paintings
of the country churches in the area of Srem. As the building of churches advanced,
spiritual life of the villagers developed as well and the church library grew richer in
publications. Written down in special protocols and read aloud to the believing people,
morales given by the metropolitans of Karlovci made the population (that had come
from nearly each territory Serbs had lived in) tie their fortune to a career of a border
soldier, which can clearly be seen in the church itself. Art historians describe it as a
military church, i.e. the temple where, should theological learning permit, the accent
was predominantly on Serbian saints or Sacred warriors. During the 18th century,
number of priests varied, between two or three at the beginning of the century and

102

XVIII

even eight in the middle of the century. It is not easy to reconstruct their lives, but
it is possible to draw certain guidelines as well as notice that priests advanced from
humbly educated people, insignificantly different from their own parochians, towards
highly educated individuals whose influence and reputation eventually grew important
enough for them to be buried in tombs built inside the temple itself

UP TO GORNJAK AND BACK

a miggration within a colonisation
(19201941)
SUMMARY
Process of agrarian reform and colonisation between two World Wars in the Yugoslav
monarchy was caracterised by compromises and tendencies of wealthier land owners
to restrict acheivements of agrarian reform and colonisation on their manors. The
influence of the wealthy land owners on the public opinion, professionals, part of the
agrarian administration, local authorities and some political parties resulted in agrarian
reform being partial and incomplete. The most visible symbol of agrarian reform and
the changes caused by the outcome of the First World War on the territories of Srem,
Banat and Baka, were the colonists, mostly volunteers of the Serbian army in The
Grand War. By bringing the colonists, the government protected its weak borders
and tried to change the ethnicity of this area in favor of Serbian ethnic corps. That is
why for the opponents of the agrarian reform and of the new South Slavic country, it
was important to disable colonization and create the sense of insecurity in newcomers,
already extremely poor. Due to this fact, together with the the lack of disposable soil
and poor quality land, in the autumn of 1928, 53 families which were granted land in
Banat were relocated to the Eltzs manor, in Srem, on the farm named Gornjak. As
early as 1929, recently settled colonists were ordered by the Ministry of agriculture
to leave the farm Gornjak as the land owner got the allowed maximum of land to
maintain paddock on the manor. The lawsuit between the colonists and the Ministry
of agriculture lasted until the autumn of 1931 when the colonists were sent back to
Banat where they had lived before they came to the farm Gornjak in March 1929.

EMPEROR FRANZ JOSEPH VISITING

THE DUKEDOM OF SERBIA AND TAMI BANAT
WITHIN THE MILITARY BORDER IN 1852
SUMMARY
The Habsburg Monarchy endured hardship after the tumultuous events of the
1848/49. The battle for the domination in Italy and Germany was about to happen,
while the inner unity was being undermined by Hungarians complaints as well as by
the activities of liberal circles of other nationalities. In order to strenghten the unity of
the Reign, the court decided that the emperor Franz Joseph should visit the territories
formerly under Hungarian rule.
The visit was being carefully prepared, regarding the activities of propaganda by
Austrian authorities and the fact that archduke Albrecht completed the whole planned
voyage during the spring of 1852. Emperor had arrived in Buda on June 5, where he
stayed for another five days. After that, he visited settlements in southeastern Hungary
and on June 14, through Peka, he came to Timisoara, the region of the Dukedom of
Serbia and Tami Banat. Among other dignitaries, Patriarch Josif Rajai was one of
the most important persons who received the emperor. The occasion itself was reported
by the Serbian press in the Monarchy (Srbski dnevnik and Svetovid). Later on, the
sovereign returned to Buda across the eastern Hungaria, wherefrom he payed a visit
to Upper Hungaria of that time (Slovakia). Between July 13 and July 20, he toured
the Podunavlje region. On July 15 he visited Novi Sad, Petrovaradin and Karlovci, on
July 16 and 17 he was in Titel, Zemun and Panevo. There was an incident in Novi
Sad, since people greeted more formally Patriarch Rajai than Franz Joseph himself.
Archimandrite Nikanor Gruji was accused of this incident. Afterwards, the Austrian
emperor was greeted in Petrovaradin by Stevan Knianin and Aleksa Jankovi, the
emissaries of the Serbian prince Aleksandar Karaorevi and in Zemun the two
rulers met. From July 20 until the end of the month, Franz Joseph sojourned in Erdelj,
subsequently returning, across Upper Hungaria, to Vienna, where he got on August 14.
The visit of Franz Joseph to Hungaria, Erdelj, the Dukedom of Serbia and Tami

Banat and the Military border in 1852 gave hardly any results. Yet, it is interesting to
see how the emperor was received amongst Serbs. Above all, the saved appeals of the
people represent valuable historical source documenting their problems and difficulties.

A HERO OF HIS ERA

PROFESSOR BOKO PETROVI ELJSKI, PHD
(Parage, September 9, 1869 Skoplje, July 2, 1913)
SUMMARY
Boko Petrovi, PhD, was originally from Baka. He studied philosophy in Vienna
where he obtained his doctorate degree as well. He also held a diploma of the Vienna
Conservatory at the Department of Vocal Arts. He worked as a grammar school teacher
in Sarajevo, Tuzla and Novi Sad. He was the only academically educated Serb who
sang publicly, not in opera but along gusle,33 thus exalting the simple people of Srem
with songs about old Serbian fame. He wrote philosophical essays, short stories, novels,
critics. Further on, he founded the Russian club, and he was a member of the managing
board of Srpski Sokol34 in Novi Sad, as well as a correspondent of the newspapers Srpska
rije from Sarajevo, Branik and Zastava from Novi Sad and Tribun from Belgrade.
He was a contributor to the magazines Bosanska vila, Nada and kolski Vijesni from
Sarajevo, as well as to Javor, Strailovo and Brankovo kolo. The episode from Novi
Sad, in 1911, when he secretly met prince Grigorije Nikolajevi Trubecky, the Russian
emissary from Carigrad, remained less known. He had a dynamic life, cut short by
the tragic death in Skoplje, caused by cholera during the Second Balkan War. He
reported from Bregalnica as a war correspondent, where he signed in as a volunteer.
He held an important place among Serbs, national workers and the intelectuals of
Vojvodina. He left behind a versatile work, worth noticing. His poems were published
under the pseudonym eljski, he wrote short stories, essays, two novels, articles on
aesthetics, etc. Special attention, from the aspect of historical science, should be payed
to his two original works On culture of the native Serbs in Hungaria, published in
Sremski Karlovci in 1913 and From the old Serbian literature, published in Sremski
Karlovci in 1911. These two works are important because here he uses arguments to

shed light over less known old Serbian manuscripts and churches which had been
monuments of the Serbian long-time presence at the teritory of todays Hungary and
Baranja. He discovered the copy from Baranja of the Tzar Duans Code book, which
was appreciated by the Russian scientist A. V. Solovjev. He left behind valuable and
useful facts for dating over forty manuscripts which range between the middle of the
fourteenth century up to the end of the eighteenth century.

Eure Majestt!
Allergndigster Kaiserund Herr!
ppige Fruchtfelder umgeschaffen.

anderen Nationalittsfraktion betrachtet werde.

THE BOGARO PETITION OF 1849

SUMMARY
The author analyses The Bogaro Petition of 1849, the first manifestation of
nationalism of German population in Banat, an issue that remained neglected in Serbian
historiography. In this petition the Germans from southern Hungary formulated their
own national program asking for the establishment of special German county governed
by a German count. Despite the fact that the petition was unsuccessful, it is worth
being examined as a sign of awakened German nationalism during the revolution of
1848/49 in Hungary. The text of the document in German original and in Serbian
translation is integral part of the paper.

THE FORGOTTEN APPEAL FOR

THE RECONSTRUCTION OF MONASTERIES
ON FRUKA GORA
(by Milan P. Kosti, PhD)
SUMMARY
Appeal for the reconstruction of monasteries on Fruka gora was written after
the Second World War by Milan P. Kosti, Phd. It was an unsuccessful attempt of
an estimated lawyer, publicist, member of The Literary Council and The Committee
for Ascertaining Guilt in Ruining Cultural-Historical Monuments in Srem, to make
public the truth he himself had found out after meticulous research and archive work.
Firstly, he presented human victims 25.000 murdered people in Srem and material
damage worth billions of dinars. The damage inflicted on monuments, monasteries,
churches and schools was described as unquestionable or absolute. Hopovo and Rakovac,
monasteries on Fruka gora built in the sixteenth century, were mined. A drastic
example was monastery Beenovo, since it was hard to recognize the place where
the church had stood previously. It was ghastly to see empty, burnt walls of Serbian
monasteries Hopovo, Kuvedin, iatovac, Rakovac, Grgeteg etc. ... Only the damage
of buildings was assessed, for each individual monastery as for all the monasteries on
Fruka gora and it was 1.154.000.000 dinars. It was not possible to determine the real
damage because these buildings are of exceptional cultural importance, they are firstrate national heritage. Futher on, the author describes the whole set of Serbian places
in which the ustae9 burnt schools, archives, libraries etc. ... Another sort of damage
refers to the disappearance of certain objects: inventory, furniture, paintings, libraries
and archives. The author turned to the community due to lack of evidence concerning
the fate of the missing objects for instance, the disapperarance of thirty portaits of
famous painters (Novak Radonji, Uro Predi, Pavle urkovi, Georgije Bakalovi)
9

Croatian fascist movement.

from the Grammar school in Sremski Karlovci. He expressed fear that these were
taken to some foreign gallery or antique shop. The bronze statues of Branko Radievi,
Sava Tekelija, Georgije Brankovi and oka Jovanovi, which possessed significant
artistic and historical value, had the same fate. It is not known what had happened to
the archives and the libraries of the grammar schools in Karlovci, Ruma and Mitrovica.
The opressors did not, as it was ascertained, destroy everything but they also took
away some objects with themselves. Public archives of Novi Sad, taken to the Czech
Republic on the initiative of Rudolf mit, should have been brought back to Novi Sad.
Majority of paintings from the castle Odeskalki in Ilok were fetched to Germany.
Furniture that values 20.000.000 dinars was taken from the Patriarchy. The only person
who had enough courage to speak out publicly, on the radio, was academician Veljko
Petrovi as well as Professor Radoslav Gruji, who acted through magazine Glasnik
Patrijarije. They indicated Professor Vladimir Tkali, as an example of how national
heritage should be treated. Owing to his endevours, eleven wagons-loads of priceless
objects were brought back from Zagreb, each wagon-load weighing fifteen tons, which
indicates the degree of robery and damage inflicted upon the cultural heritage of Srem.
