APC's Vision & Mission APC History Recogniti on and Awards Executive Leadershi p

American Power Conversion, incorporated in March 1981, was founded by three electronic power engineers from the Corporate Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At the time, the Communicatio research and development efforts of these three men were n focused on solar electricity. Over the next few years, government funding and incentives in the solar arena Press began to dry up. In response, APC shifted its focus to power protection, introducing its first UPS in 1984, the 750. The need for capital to support this growing business Other was satisfied in July 1988 when APC became a publicly Resources traded company. The stock, trading under the symbol Directions "APCC," was priced at $.125 per share when adjusted for to APC stock splits. Employme nt During this time, it was well known that computer systems required back-up power solutions. It was quite common for a mainframe computer to have a large uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and generator installed in tandem. APC came at the market from a different perspective. Industry trends involving the personal computer made APC management realize that smaller UPSs were necessary for the market that included personal computers, PC servers and their networks.

Over the years, APC has developed a global, end-to-end, product offering targeted at four strategic application areas: Home/Small Office; Business Networks; Access Providers and Data Centers & Facilities. Internal product development has been augmented with strategic acquisitions to form an industry leading product portfolio. Throughout the world, the APC brand has become synonymous with quality power back-up and management solutions. Today, APC is a leader in its industry, employing over 5,000 people worldwide, and is listed among the prestigious Fortune 1000, Forbes 500, Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 rankings.

A Bicycle For Your Mind

Like Jobs and Gates, we believe the PC is one of the most remarkable tools humans have ever created. Great tools improve with time. They dont go away. Many common computing tasks, such as number crunching, data storage, and communications have shifted to the Internet. As a result, a very low cost computer with access to the Internet can be just as valuable as a much more expensive computer. APC was born from our love of computers and our realization that the PC needs a fundamental redesign. The redesign that we offer is a computer that is more accessible, and more valuable, because youre not paying for functions that you dont need and wont be using.

$49 Android PC System

APC was not built like an ordinary PC. For openers, we started with an awareness that the purpose of a computer is to connect to the Internet. It is the Internet that now defines computing. When you begin here, magic happens. Expensive, overpowered CPUs and bloated software are no longer relevant. With this awareness, we were able to drop power consumption to the point of making an energy-saving light-bulb jealous.

Technical Details
APC runs a custom Android system, built for keyboard and mouse input. A basic selection of applications is preinstalled. Also included is a full set of consumer I/O ports, enabling APC to connect to your PC monitor or TV. Item Model Description APC 8750

White Plains Public Library Creates OPAC Terminal Based on APC

Ryan Jackson, part of the Tech team at the White Plains Public Library in New York State, was looking around for a cheap way to boot one of his dead hard drives when he came across APC and thought it would be a great fit for the library. He contacted us about receiving a unit to test and see if it would be suitable for their needs.

For our purposes here at the Library, I saw it as possibly being well suited for use as an OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog), those systems only needing to provide browser access to the Librarys online resources, primarily the catalog. Another possible use would be as a low cost express email kiosk system for public access, said John Lolis, Manager of Information Technology, White Plains Public Library. After receiving an APC, they decided to install Mike Thompsons bootable Raspbian Arpicot image of Linux and installed the Chromium web browser, the Google Chrome Browser for Linux, in order to provide a more robust set of features than the Midori web browser that was packaged in the Raspbian Apricot image. After locking the system down with some customized scripts, they have now deployed their ACP to serve as an OPAC system Im confident at this point that the APC would satisfy our needs for a very low cost, low power and small footprint OPAC system, said John Lolis. The system board is now mounted in Mike Thompsons clear acrylic snap-together case and its now prominently deployed as Our New, Low Cost Experimental Online Catalog PC. They are currently testing it in the library, so if you happen to stop by there be sure to check it out by the Reference Desk as you enter the lobby. To read more about their experience, click here. To read more about their work installing Raspbian, Chromium and how they locked down their system, click here. Comments (0)
