: ELA Appropriate Grade Level(s): 2nd Grade Required Time: Two (2) 40 minute lessons Collaborative Potential: 2nd Grade Teacher(s) Overview: Students will be introduced to the fairy tale genre and be read two versions of Cinderella. As a group, students will compare/contrast the fairy tales and complete a Venn Diagram on the SmartBoard. CONTENT TOPIC Fairy Tales Cinderella CONNECTION TO CONTENT STANDARD(S) Common Core Standard(s) New York: CC.2.R.I.9 Integration of Knowledge and Ideas: Compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topic. CC.2.R.L.2 Key Ideas and Details: Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral. AASL STANDARDS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY LEARNER GOALS 1.1.6 Read, view, and listen for information presented in any format (e.g., textual, visual, media, digital) in order to make inferences and gather meaning. 1.1.7 Make sense of information gathered from diverse sources by identifying misconceptions, main and supporting ideas, conflicting information, and point of view or bias. 4.1.3 Respond to literature and creative expressions of ideas in various formats and genres. Benchmark Skill: Students will be able to compare/contrast two versions of the fairy tale Cinderella and will complete a Venn Diagram as a group. ASSESSMENT & CRITERIA Product: The teacher-librarian(s) (TLs) will assess the responses from individual student for completeness and accuracy while reading/reviewing the fairy tales. TLs will also review the Venn Diagram completed by the class along the same guidelines. Students will be considered successful if they are able to gather and compare the main points from each fairy tale version of Cinderella. Process: TLs will observe class participation and note students abilities to listen and gather the main points from each fairy tale version of Cinderella. New York, NY: Dragonfly/Random House children's Books. INSTRUCTION AND ACTIVITIES Direct Instruction: After students sit, TL will ask, What type of book is Cinderella? (answer: Fairy Tale) How do you know its a fairy tale? After going through some of the characteristics of fairy tales, TL will explain the lesson and read one version of Cinderella; Cinderella by Charles Perrault. The second day, the TL will read Sootface: an Ojibwa Cinderella Story by Robert D. San Souci. Modeling and Guided Practice: TL will show the Venn Diagram (SM1) on the SmartBoard and will ask if the students have ever seen/use one a Venn Diagram. TL will explain how the Diagram works and go through an example of each section. Independent Practice: Day 1: Together the class will come up with some of the main points from Cinderella. Day 2: Students will work together as a class to complete the Venn Diagram; students will make suggestions for each category and the TL will write it on the Venn Diagram on the SmartBoard. Sharing and Reflecting: Students will share with the class and TL other fairy tales what they know and reflect on which version of Cinderella they enjoyed more and why.
