EDITORS LETTER
HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of our friends & fellow riders! We hope that everyone enjoyed their holiday season and are ready to take on the New Year with vim and vigor. We have so many new and exciting things that well be introducing into our magazine in the coming issues & of course our favorite featured pages which have become part of the framework for Thunder Roads for years, will continue to roll along with us. Make new friends, but keep the oldone is silver & the other gold. We have made so many incredible friends throughout the past 10 years with the magazine but its exciting to know that we have so many more folks that will be crossing our paths this year that will become a part of our Thunder Roads family in one form or another. These new friends out there that are on our horizon arent strangers to usthey are just friends we havent met yet. As the New Year begins, we hear many folks talk about their new years resolutions, which are all made with good intentions. For some reason many of these resolutions, depending on what they are, will be difficult to keep & will fade away by the time Valentines Day gets here. I personally choose not to do them because I try to make changes as I go, that are needed. This way they dont stack on me at the end of the year. As my mom used to always say to us kids, Dont put off til tomorrow what you can do today.oh, that is so true. If I put it off, then Im likely to forget ha ha. Im always trying to work on something and my latest something you might be able to relate to. I have been working on not saving special things for a special occasionsevery day should be considered a special occasion. Now I try to read & relax more and clean less. Im learning that its ok to just do nothing once in a while. I spend more time outdoors and playing with my dogs without worrying about anything. Im working on spending more time with my family, and less at work. Im working on getting rid of things that I dont need that clutter up my cabinets, closets and any place that Ive got stuff stored its going either into the trash or to Good Will. I try to use my good glasses every day. I dont save my special perfume for special occasions, I use it whenever I want to, which now is almost everyday. The words Someday.... and One Day... are fading away from my dictionary. If its worth seeing, listening or doing, I want to see, listen or do it now. If I knew my time was limited, its the small things that I would regret not doing, not some trip to Australia or jumping out of an airplane. Life should be a source of experience to be lived up to, not survived through. Each day, each hour, each minute, is special. Live for today, for tomorrow is promised to noone. Our best wishes go out to all of you for a happy, healthy, peaceful & prosperous New Year. Lets all work together to make 2013 our best year yet! Thanks for being here with us & we will see you out on the road real soon! Happy Trails.

A New Year
This has been in our mag before but we thought it might be good to run it again to remind everyone about the important things in life as we head into a new year. We hope 2013 is your best year yet! When things in your lives seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee. A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous yes. The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed. Now, said the professor as the laughter subsided, I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things--your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions--and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car. The sand is everything else--the small stuff. If you put the sand into the jar first, he continued, there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first--the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand. One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. Im glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, theres always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.

Proud To Be AN AMERICAN
Freedom And Jeff
Freedom and Jeff have been together for over 13 years. She entered The Sarvey Wildlife Center as a tiny eaglet in 1998. Both her wings were broken, her left one in four places. Even after surgery, it didnt open all the way and never healed completely. Shes Jeffs baby. When Freedom arrived, she could not stand, was emaciated and covered in lice. The Center staff made the decision to give her a chance at life, so Jeff took her to the vets office. From then on, they were a twosome, always together. They placed her in a huge dog carrier minus the top, loaded with shredded newspaper for her to lay in. Jeff used to sit and talk to her, urging her to live, to fight; and she would lay there looking up at him with those big brown eyes. Freedom had to be fed by tube for the first 4-6 weeks, and even after that she still couldnt stand. It got to the point where they made a decision: If she couldnt stand in the next week, they would euthanize her. You know you dont want to cross that line between torture and rehab, and it looked like death was winning, explained Jeff. She was going to be put down that Friday, and Jeff

Proud To Be AN AMERICAN
was scheduled to come in to the Center that prior afternoon. He found it difficult to push himself to make that dreaded trip to the Center on Thursday because he couldnt bear the thought of her being euthanized. But he went anyway, and when he walked in, to his surprise everyone was grinning from ear to ear. He dashed back to Freedoms cage; and there she was, standing on her own, a big beautiful eagle. She was ready to live. Jeff was just about in tears by then. That was a very good day! They knew she could never fly, so the director asked Jeff to glove train her. He got her used to the glove, and started doing education programs for schools in western Washington. They wound up in the newspapers, radio, and some TV. Miracle Pets even did a show about them. In the spring of 2000, Jeff was diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkins lymphoma, requiring 8 months of chemo. He lost his hair and missed a lot of work. When he felt good enough, he would go to Sarvey and take Freedom out for walks, but when not feeling strong enough, Freedom would come to him in his dreams and help him fight

the cancer. According to Jeff, his happened time and time again. Fast forward to November, the day after Thanksgiving. Jeff went in for my last checkup. Having been told that if the cancer was not all gone after eight rounds of chemo, his last option would be a stem cell transplant, he was understandably on edge. But when he heard his newest test results, he learned that he was cancer free. The first thing he did was get up to Sarvey and take the big girl out for a walk. It was misty and cold when they went to the top of the hill. He hadnt said a word to Freedom, but somehow she seemed to know. She looked up into his eyes while wrapping both her wings around him. Jeff could feel those wings pressing in on his back. Then she touched her beak to his nose with while still staring into his eyes. That was a magic moment for both of them Jeff standing there engulfed in eagle wings, with two pair of eyes transfixed on one another. Jeff has never forgotten the honor of having that special bird with her magnificent spirit of Freedom so closely connected with his life.

New Years Resolutions

A New Years resolution is a promise a person makes for the new year. Regardless of what resolution you commit to, the goal is to improve life in the coming year. Resolutions can come in many forms. Some people make a promise to change a bad habit, such as quitting smoking or eating less junk food. Other people make a promise to develop a positive habit, such as starting an exercise program, volunteering in their community or recycling more. The tradition of New Years resolutions dates all the way back to 153 B.C. January is named after Janus, a mythical god of early Rome. Janus had two faces one looking forward, one looking backward. This allowed him to look back on the past and forward toward the future. On December 31, the Romans imagined Janus looking backward into the old year and forward into the new year. This became a symbolic time for Romans to make resolutions for the new year and forgive enemies for troubles in the past. The Romans also believed Janus could forgive them for their wrongdoings in the previous year. The Romans would give gifts and make promises, believing Janus would see this and bless them in the year ahead. And thus the New Years resolution was born!

GOOD FOR YOU For The New Year

OATMEAL Start your day with a steaming bowl of oats, which are full of omega-3 fatty acids, folate, and potassium. This fiberrich superfood can lower levels of LDL (or bad) cholesterol and help keep arteries clear. Opt for coarse or steel-cut oats over instant varietieswhich contain more fiberand top your bowl off with a banana for another 4 grams of fiber. SALMON Super-rich in omega-3 fatty acids, salmon can effectively reduce blood pressure and keep clotting at bay. Aim for two servings per week, which may reduce your risk of dying of a heart attack by up to one-third. Salmon contains the carotenoid astaxanthin, which is a very powerful antioxidant, says cardiologist Stephen T. Sinatra, MD, the author of Lower Your Blood Pressure In Eight Weeks. But be sure to choose wild salmon over farm-raised fish, which can be packed with insecticides, pesticides, and heavy metals. Not a fan of salmon? Other oily fish like mackerel, tuna, herring, and sardines will give your heart the same boost. AVOCADO Add a bit of avocado to a sandwich or spinach salad to up the amount of heart-healthy fats in your diet. Packed with monounsaturated fat, avocados can help lower LDL levels while raising the amount of HDL cholesterol in your body. Avocados are awesome, says Dr. Sinatra. They allow for the absorption of other carotenoidsespecially beta-carotene and lycopenewhich are essential for heart health. OLIVE OIL Full of monounsaturated fats, olive oil lowers bad LDL cholesterol and reduces your risk of developing heart disease. Results from the Seven Countries Study, which looked at cardiovascular disease incidences across the globe, showed that while men in Crete had a predisposition for high cholesterol levels, relatively few died of heart disease because their diet focused on heart-healthy fats found in olive oil. Look for extra-virgin or virgin varietiestheyre the least processedand use them instead of butter when cooking. NUTS Walnuts are full of omega-3 fatty acids and, along with almonds and macadamia nuts, are loaded with mono- and polyunsaturated fat. Plus, nuts increase fiber in the diet, says Dr. Sinatra. And like olive oil, they are a great source of healthy fat. BERRIES Blueberries, raspberries, strawberrieswhatever berry you like bestare full of anti-inflammatories, which reduce your risk of heart disease and cancer. Blackberries and blueberries are especially great. But all berries are great for your vascular health. LEGUMES Fill up on fiber with lentils, chickpeas, and black and kidney beans. Theyre packed with omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, and soluble fiber.

SPINACH Spinach can help keep your ticker in top shape thanks to its stores of lutein, folate, potassium, and fiber. But upping your servings of any veggies is sure to give your heart a boost. The Physicians Health Study examined more than 15,000 men without heart disease for a period of 12 years. Those who ate at least two-and-a-half servings of vegetables each day cut their risk of heart disease by about 25%, compared with those who didnt eat the veggies. Each additional serving reduced risk by another 17%. FLAXSEED Full of fiber and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, a little sprinkling of flaxseed can go a long way for your heart. Top a bowl of oatmeal or whole-grain cereal with a smidgen of ground flaxseed for the ultimate heart-healthy breakfast.

SOY Soy may lower cholesterol, and since it is low in saturated fat, its still a great source of lean protein in a heart-healthy diet. Look for natural sources of soy, like edamame, tempeh, or organic silken tofu. And soy milk is a great addition to a bowl of oatmeal or whole-grain cereal. But watch the amount of salt in your soy: some processed varieties like soy dogs can contain added sodium, which boosts blood pressure.

Let It Snow: Wow you severely underestimated the weather there Bub! I get having a positive attitude towards the weather but in reality that doesnt determine whether or not it will snow. Now personally, I moved south to the beach so I dont have to put up with this crap, but the key word there is moved; You gotta do more than just have Carolina on your mind to keep yourself and your car snow-free.

The Neck Beard: You are the rooster king!!! Oh my, that is one of the most bizarre things Ive ever seen. Im more in awe and impressed that you go out in public like this. Wow! Is that a neck beard or overgrown chest hair???

Needless to say the kids werent as excited this year when they put that ol silk cap on Frostys head this year and instead of dancing around with them he hopped on his motor-scooter and headed to Wally World.

Snow Job: What do you guys think, does this homemade snowmobile get the thumbs up for ingenuity or should it be sent over to WhiteTrashRepairs?

The Abominable Ho-Man: The Abominable Snowman did a great job of covering up and blending in, but unfortunately they dont make Timberlands in a size 58. But still, an A for effort Mr. Yeti.

WWIB: Wrappin With Reynolds: Get with the times people! Aluminum foil is no longer used to just wrap up old pizza. In todays world, we can pretty much put anything on our bodies and call it fashionable. So are you leaning towards rocking the winged hat or the full body suit?

Smoke & A Pancake: Life lesson for you all out there: Never mess with a chick that looks like she curls Harleys for fun.

Its Time To Go: Let me introduce you to Tickets To The Gun Show: I think we have just Walmarts other vision for America, SAMs Club disproved the saying guns dont kill people. where the quantities are larger and so are the Check out those cannons! parenting failures.

SUPREME COURT STRIKES DOWN LAW AGAINST FILMING POLICE The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected an Illinois prosecutors appeal to allow enforcement of a state law barring ordinary citizens from recording police officers as they do their jobs. A lower federal court had found that Illinois anti-eavesdropping law violates free speech rights because it was being used by police and prosecutors against people who tape law enforcement officers. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) had filed a lawsuit against Cook County in 2010 to halt prosecution of ACLU staffers for recording cops in public spaces, an activity promoted by the ACLU all over the country, but when Chicago officials objected the legislature passed a law outlawing the filming of them. The so-called anti-eavesdropping measure was designed to prevent covert recordings without consent, but the State of Illinois has applied that statute to mean any photography in a public zone; meaning no photographing or recording a cop on a public street while he/she is making a traffic stop, arrest, or for any other reason. Most other states dont have laws prohibiting the filming of anyone or anything in public places, and the Illinois law had some serious teeth, carrying a 15-year prison term. But the High Court has sided with a lower court decision protecting the rights of Americans when it comes to privacy under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and they refused to take action on the appeal. In rejecting the states plea to criminalize videotaping police, the Supreme Court apparently agrees with the lower court, and police officers have no more expectation to privacy in public than any other person in America. Harvey Grossman, legal director of the Illinois ACLU, was pleased with the result; The ACLU of Illinois continues to believe that in order to make the rights of free expression and petition effective, individuals and organizations must be able to freely gather and record information about the conduct of government and their agents -- especially the police. The National Coalition of Motorcyclists has presented various seminars during past NCOM Conventions on proper procedures for recording law enforcement officers in the performance of their duty, and although the Supreme Court has now given their blessing to such exercises of our civil rights under the United States Constitution, be aware not to interfere with, disrupt, or cause delays for police officers in their official duty while doing so. VIRGINIA BIKERS SCORE HELMET VICTORY IN COURT A dozen motorcyclists convicted of violating Virginias mandatory helmet law have had their convictions reversed by the state Court of Appeals, while three others had their helmet convictions affirmed by the court. All 15 defendants were wearing headgear of some kind when they attended the 2011 Virginia Beach Bike Classic, but police claimed the riders helmets failed to meet the states standards. Each of them was convicted in general district court and in circuit court, but on appeal the state acknowledged the lower courts were in error in 12 of those 15 cases. Virginias helmet law, Code 46.2-910, requires helmets to meet any of three published

standards but does not require any marks or labels to show compliance. Ten of the convictions addressed in Bennett v. Commonwealth were based solely on a lack of labeling, so those convictions were reversed. One rider wore what a trooper described as a toy helmet with a plastic chin strap held together with a key ring. The state argued the key ring flunked one published standard, but the court of appeals panel said the state failed to rule out compliance with the other standards, so that conviction also was reversed. In three cases, the motorcyclists admitted to a trooper that they knew their headgear was not the real deal. One helmet even had a label identifying it as a novelty helmet, not for road use. For those three riders, the trip to the Court of Appeals proved fruitless. Convictions affirmed. An admission of guilt, while always ill-advised, doesnt always equate to a conviction, however, as the 3-judge panel drew a fine line with one remaining defendant who told the trooper he knew he was wearing a novelty helmet -- but that statement alone was not enough to establish it failed to meet any of the safety standards, the court held. That bikers conviction was reversed, as reported in Virginia Lawyers Weekly. TRAFFIC FATALITIES LOWEST EVER Total U.S. traffic fatalities dropped to their lowest level since 1949, despite an 8.7% rise in bicyclist deaths and 20% jump in fatalities of occupants of large trucks. Overall traffic fatalities dropped 1.9% to 32,367, reports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in an analysis of 2011 traffic deaths. The decline came as the number of miles driven by motorists dropped by 1.2%. Last year also saw the lowest fatality rate ever recorded, with 1.10 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2011, down from 1.11 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2010. The increase in bicycle deaths likely reflects more people riding bicycles to work and for pleasure as our culture begins moving toward healthier and greener modes of transportations, but the increase in deaths of large-truck occupants is more puzzling though it may be due to more trucks returning to the road as the economy improves. Motorcycle deaths also rose 2.1%, marking the 13th time in the last 14 years that motorcycle rider fatalities have risen, reflecting more than a decade of record sales levels and escalating registrations nationwide. NEED FOR SPEED Florida #1 for Speeding Tickets, Wyoming #1 for Speed Deaths. As you may know, Texas drivers can now legally outrun the rest of the U.S. with a new 85 MPH speed limit posted between Austin and San Antonio, now the fastest stretch in the country. But its in Florida that you run the greatest risk of getting slapped with a speeding ticket. Georgia, Nevada, Texas and Alabama follow Florida as the Top 5 states for speeding (Texas ranks a mere #4). Wyoming drivers, meanwhile, have the highest rate of speeding-related deaths in the nation. 25 million speeding tickets are issued nationwide each year, and drivers pay an average of $150 per ticket.

Mandys Back Pooch

behind me ! I thought...oh oh....what did I do? He got out of the car and said, I just HAD to turn around and get a picture of that ...do you For anyone who likes to ask me why I built Mandys Back Pooch, I like to tell mind? It was then that I realized full throttle that Mandy and I were them that it was because my wife told me that if I spent anymore money on the bike on our way to having lots of fun riding together. Mandy has so far ridor the dog I would be in the dog house, so I said...OK I will build one then. den in her Back Pooch from Prince George, Virginia to Washington The truth is that Mandy and I are close and I wanted a way to take her with me D.C., Biketoberfest in Daytona, Florida, and hundreds of miles around when I went on the bike, especially now that I am retired. I tried having her sit on the the area including the local Teddy Bear Run to Richmond Childrens back seat, and while that worked, I was afraid that if anything startled her, or I had Hospital and other local area events. to react quickly that she would get thrown off....so I explored dog trailers. Nothing She has more pictures on www.mandysbackpooch.com Id seen out there impressed me, didnt have the look, or was too expensive...so I developed the idea of building one. Following that train of thought, I bought a trailer kit from a equipment and supply company, and a cedar dog house from a building supply company, added a sheet of plywood with indoor/outdoor grass and put them all together......thinking I wanted to make it look like a back yard complete with picket fence. I never have to worry about her jumping out. When I built it I made it so there is no space for her to get up enough height but I also trained her to stay. As for the design, I just wanted it to look like a back yard with dog house....Snoopy in the Peanuts comic strip was part of the process. In thinking that I wanted to keep her as safe as possible, I put a roll cage inside the dog house. The fence sticks out far enough from her entrance so she cannot jump out, but close enough to prevent her from getting hurt. Adding outdoor solar lights and covering the sharp points of the picket fence with golf balls was the crowning touch. The ride, however, proved to be a little too bouncy for her, so I took off the leaf springs that came with the trailer, and put on tortion bars with a rubber mounted spring to stop overtravel. Everything has been designed for her safety and mine. It took Mandy a bit of time to get used to looking backwards while I was traveling, but she got used to it, and we plan on doing alot of traveling together. Her first long trip was from Prince George, Virginia to Washington D.C.....and her longest trip has been all the way to Daytona Beach and back for Biketoberfest 2012. When we travel, people are always taking pictures and giving us the thumbs up signal as we go down the road. Stopping at rest stops and fuel stations always draws a crowd. Mandy is a regular photo H.O.G and I am sure she is known far and wide. I even had business cards made with her picture on it with her website and email address and hand them out to anyone who wants a remembrance of Mandys Back Pooch. It was a labor of love, and we will be doing many miles with many smiles for many years. I guess one of the things I like most about taking Mandy with me is that she is the most lovable, mild mannered and friendly dog I have ever partnered with... and thats saying a lot, with me being 64 years old and having many dogs in my life. She adores kids and attention and constantly amazes me with her personality. I remembered last night that the first time I took her for a test ride on I-95, I forgot to latch the roof and pulled over to do so. No sooner did I stop than a Virginia State Cop pulled up behind me, and after asking if everything was ok........asked if he could take a picture! ROFL... and the icing on that cake was as I was going home, I passed a Prince George County Cop going the other direction, and when I pulled into my driveway, I looked behind me and saw him pulling into my driveway

We had 2 wonderful stories come in for Christmastime but only had enough room to run one so were bringing this one into the new year with usenjoy! Well, Christmas is upon us! Yeah! Its my favorite time of the year. Watching the faces of the little children, smiling and laughing. Looking at the beautiful decorations and hearing Christmas music! I get to go to the Richmond Christmas Parade this year. I have never been before. Im going up to my daughters apartment, eat breakfast and walk to Broad Street. Im like a kid when it comes to parades. Some of my most memorable times were at Christmas. My Daddy was a Merchant Seaman and was gone a lot of the time, so we spent a lot of time at my grandparent house, which happens to be right up the road. We would be up there every Christmas Eve. Grand Mom and my mummy would wrap presents and my brother and I would wait to hear the bell! What was the bell you say? Well, let me answer that right now. When it was time to go home and get into bed so Santa could come, we would hear this mysterious bell ringing, right outside the side window of their house. Once we heard that, we would rush mummy into going home and run and jump into our beds. This one particular night, I was determined to see who was ringing this bell. I sat quietly on the footstool, beside the front door, with my coat and gloves on, ready to fly out the front door once I hear the first sound of a ring-a-ling. Mummy and Grandmom didnt even notice me sitting there because they were so busy wrapping and tying bows. And then it happened! I heard the bell ringing as loud as it could be. I jumped up and flew out the front door, running as fast as I could. I followed the footprints in the snow, which came the night before, to my advantage. I even saw where Santa had fell sprawling in the snow and jumped up and took off again. By the time I made it to the back door, I had lost all footprints. I guess I was too small to figure out that it was because he had ran back into the house. We never heard the bell anymore after that night. One other time, I had been a very bad girl. Of course you may find that hard to believe, but I wasnt always a pastor! Tee Hee! Christmas morning, we would get up and see what Santa brought us at home and then go to our grandparents to see what Santa brought us at their house. My brother had a beautiful, red, shiny, new bicycle, sitting right in the living room. I looked around and I didnt see one for me. I kept on looking and still no bike for me. My grandma said, Here is something with your name on it. It was a big, red, satin bag with a pretty black bow on it. I grabbed it, opened it up and looked inside to find a note saying, Maybe you will be better next year...Love, Santa. Inside were pieces of black coal and switches and ashes! Oh No! I cant believe that I messed up getting a bike! I promised to never be that bad again. Then, my mummy went on the back porch and yelled for me. When I ran out there, there was the most beautiful, pink bike I had ever seen! I cant say that I kept my promise, though. I love to sit around and talk about all my memories, but I never forget the reason for the season. This is the time we celebrate the birth

of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was the best gift any of us could ever receive. He was born in a manger, among the animals. A precious, little, sweet, baby boy. That would die a horrible death on a cross, and shed His blood, so we would have access to the throne of God. His gift to us, eternal life, in Heaven, with Him. So, please remember, during all the hustle and bustle of the season, take time to look up and thank Him, who was the best gift of all! Merry Christmas to you all and to all a good night!

God, in his infinite wisdom, granted the mans wish. he next morning, sure enough, the man awoke as a woman. He arose, cooked breakfast for his mate, awakened the kids, set out their school clothes, fed them breakfast, packed their lunches, drove them to school, came home and vacuumed the entire house; upstairs and downstairs, took the cat to the vet, and stopped at the bank to make a deposit, but ended up having to go inside, went grocery shopping, loaded up 12 bags of groceries and then drove home to put away all the groceries, paid all the bills and balanced the checkbook. Drove to the Post Office; cleaned the cats litter box and bathed the dog. Then it was already 1 P.M. and he hurried to make the beds, do the laundry, dust, and sweep and mop the kitchen floor and sweep off the front porch and use the leaf blower and blow off the back deck and refill the bird-feeder. At 3:30 drove to the school to pick up the kids and got into an argument with the daughter on the way home, which was added stress. He never dealt with the kids on this emotional level before; it was very strange to him. It made him question everything. At 4:00 he set out milk and cookies and got the kids organized to do their homework, then actually got to sit down for a minute on the couch and watch t.v. while folding 3 baskets full of laundry and then running around to various rooms putting folded clothes in various dressers and hanging up shirts, pants, etc.At 4:30 he began washThe actions and legislation passage via several states brought this to ing vegetables for salad, breaded the pork chops and snapped fresh mind: It all makes sense now. A lady is throwing a party for her granddaughter and had gone all out a caterer, band and a clown. Just before the party started, two bikers showed up looking for a donation for one of their charities. Feeling sorry for the bikers, the woman told them that she would give them a donation if they would help chop some wood for her out back. Gratefully, they headed to the rear of the house. The guests arrived and all was going well. The children were having a wonderful time. But the clown hadnt shown up. After 30 minutes, the clown finally called to report that he was stuck in traffic and would probably not make the party at all. The woman was very disappointed and unsuccessfully tried to entertain the children herself. She happened to look out the window and saw one of the bikers doing cartwheels across the lawn. She watched in awe as he swung from tree branches, did mid-air flips and jumped high in the air. She went up to the other biker and said, What your friend is doing is absolutely marvelous. I have never seen such a thing. Do you think your friend would consider repeating this performance for the children at the party? I will pay him $50. The other biker says, Well, I dunno lady. Let me ask him. Hey bubba! For $50, would you chop off another toe?

That is the same sub-committee that unanimously killed the bill to prohibit children under eight from riding on motorcycles. He is a well-respected member of the House of Delegates and will make a strong patron. We continue to believe that this year presents the best opportunity we have ever had to bring Virginia in line with the majority of other states that allow motorcyclists to choose how to best protect themselves. We have worked with our lobbying team through the summer and fall to shore up support from longtime friends and to get commitments of support from key members of the Senate. Martin, Chip and Susan have done an outstanding job of getting commitments from legislators whom in the past have shown no inclination to support such a measure. Their help has been invaluable. That being said we are a far cry away from being able to declare victory. It is one thing to get commitments in September. It is another thing to have them stay with you through January. As you know, VCOM has spent a considerable amount of money in this effort. Much has been raised by Virginia motorcyclists and we are extremely grateful for that. Our law firm has donated the $25,000 to VCOM that we pledged last year. The amount needed

to keep our lobbying team through session is $24,000. We have $12,000 in the bank. We are asking motorcyclists to raise an additional $12,000. We know that this is a lot to ask but without help our chances of success decrease dramatically. We have made much progress this summer and fall (my wife jokes that I need to get back to my paying job). But this progress has been made without active opposition. Its like the difference between shooting at the range and in combat. So far we have been at the range. Come January we will have people shooting back. And if in this analogy we consider money ammo, they have a lot more than we do. That is why it was so critical to lay our foundation early. I will make this suggestion again. If everyone on this list could get ten people to donate $10.00 that would be $100 per person. If you are a member of an organization, get each member of your organization to collect $10.00 from ten people. We could raise the money in no time. Again, I want to thank everyone and every organization who has worked this year to help this effort. Your work has brought us closer than we have ever been. I am not guaranteeing victory but I am guaranteeing, with your help, a hell of a good fight. As I said before, there is no other group of people I would rather be fighting next to than you. Safety Asylum
Crash Scene Management By T.J. Miles If you ride, there is a good chance that you will eventually find yourself in a situation where you are on the scene of a motorcycle crash. Like most of us, you will feel compelled to do anything possible to help your buddy or fellow motorcyclist. So, lets get to work. The first hour after a trauma is termed the Golden Hour. Trauma victims have the best chances of survival with surgical intervention within one hour of the crash. The following will help save precious time: At a crash site, everyones adrenaline will be off the chart. At least one person needs to take two breaths, REMAIN CALM and THINK! Most people at the scene are pumped and want to help. They will do whatever they are told by a calm person who seems to be in control and knows what he/she is doing. Otherwise, everyone will run around in an unorganized fashion wasting precious time. A victim will be in a post-crash confused and scared state. It is important to offer reassurance and ensure they dont move. Identify yourself, explain to this person that they have been involved in a motorcycle crash and an ambulance is on its way. Be careful what you say around the victim, even if they are unconscious. Keep your statements positive. Stay calm and it will reduce the panic of everyone else on the scene. The person with the most medical training should attend to the victim, sit behind their head and stabilize his or her head to avoid unnecessary movement. Always assume the person has a back/neck injury and any unnecessary movement could cause paralysis. It is very dangerous to remove someones helmet if they have some type of cervical/back injury. The only time it should be removed is if the airway is blocked and cannot be cleared with the helmet on or if it is necessary to perform CPR. Check the victim for a medic-alert tag. Remove his/her rings and tell them why. Hands commonly swell with traumatic injury. The victim will thank you later. After there has been a quick evaluation of the number and severity of the injured people, call 911. One ambulance can only support one traumatically injured person. Injuries that dont look serious could be life-threatening and injuries that look fatal could be relatively minor to the untrained eye. Do your best and if you cant tell, assume its urgent! Tell the 911 operator there has been a motorcycle crash, you need emergency medical services, number and severity of the injured and location of the crash. It is helpful to let the 911 operator know if special equipment is going to be necessary. Downed power lines will need to be de-energized before medical personnel can access the victim. Its all about saving precious time. Most rural areas cannot handle severe trauma and they may need an airlift. If they know there may be a need, they can get the helicopter en route to the scene saving time. If the helicopter comes out and it turns out it wasnt necessary, there is no charge for the service. Should the fire department be called for the Jaws of Life? You, as the caller, will hang up last. Before the ambulance arrives, if possible, document information about the victim. They may become unconscious and it will be helpful to have information such as their full name, next of kin and phone number, age, doctor and medications. It is important to keep safety in mind. A victim lying in the middle of the road and his/her rescuer can easily be struck by traffic. If people are available, get someone uproad and downroad to wave down traffic. This is especially important in tight twisties where they may not have time to stop after seeing the crash site. Try to keep people out of or limit their exposure to hazardous materials such as gas, oil, fluids and body fluids. People who smoke tend to light up under stress. Ask these people to either extinguish their smokes or move away from flammable materials and/or bikes. Before the ambulance arrives, send people to the intersections in all directions to watch for/direct the ambulance. When the ambulance arrives, it is important to stay out of their way as much as possible. Meet them and offer assistance (bikes moved, people moved). Make sure you provide accessible parking for the ambulance. Give a factual account of the crash. It is IMPORTANT for medical personnel to have an estimate of the speed, circumstances at the time of the crash and an honest account of the victims drug/alcohol consumption. It is important to give medical personnel the most accurate information possible! If the person had 10 beers in the past hour, tell them! By underestimating, trying to cover up, or not telling the whole truth, you are only concealing information which may be necessary to save the victims life. If a helmet was removed, send it with the victim. The doctors may use the visible helmet damage to assist in their medical assessment. As with the ambulance, when law enforcement offer assistance. For them, walking on to a scene of bikers who are all in a very excited state is intimidating and this will help calm them and make their job easier. It is obviously important to do whatever the law enforcement officials ask. Try not to move motorcycle parts any more than necessary before the officers arrive. They may need to take crash scene notes and by moving things around you may confuse the situation for them. If parts need to be moved off the road to avoid further problems, move them directly to the side so the law enforcement officials can roughly re-create the crash. Try not to disturb the bike any more than necessary. (Petcock should be shut off, electrics turned off) Most rural ambulance and fire personnel are volunteers. Police officers often get little or no recognition for helping out on the scene. It will cheer all of them up to receive some kind of thanks for their help. Send a card or visit in person. It improves our image as bikers and rewards all of those people who take time out of their own lives to help others. It is important! Take basic first aid and CPR courses. They are offered through the American Red Cross and several other organizations periodically. Go with riding buddies or arrange a class for your riding organization. If you remain calm and think ahead, there is a good chance you will effectively help a person who is involved in a motorcycle crash beat the Golden Hour. Semper Paratus!

Disabled Motorcyclists Refuse To Quit Riding

In 1967, Chris Draayer felt like he was on top of the world and headed for great things. A factory rider for Harley-Davidson, he stood third in the AMA Grand National Championship points and was aiming for his first national title. All that changed at Sedalia, Missouri, when he crashed during a race. Both legs were broken, his neck was fractured and his left arm severed. He had barely reached his 20s and it looked like his motorcycling days were over. Chris Draayer suffered his disability in a more public and spectacular fashion than most, but otherwise he is little different from many other motorcyclists with disabilities who do not want to give up motorcycling. There are riders on the road today who are amputees, like Draayer, or paraplegics who use wheelchairs for mobility. There are riders with muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy or other illnesses that create special needs. Some riders merely find that old age has limited their abilities, but they dont want to stop riding just because theyve hit their 90s. Draayer had help from former competitor and 1969 Grand National Champion Mert Lawwill, who helped build an artificial limb that attaches to the handlebar but will release in a crash. But the fact is that most riders with disabilities are essentially on their own when it comes to finding a way to keep riding. Thats because there is no one-size-fits-all, mass-produced solution for riders with disabilities. In talking with dozens of riders with disabilities and people who have created products or modified motorcycles to help those riders, a few common facts emerged: 1. Riders with a disability often go looking for a company that makes products to meet their needs and find nothing. The most successful riders have modified existing products on the market to meet their unique needs. 2. A disabled riders best friend is often a local craftsman who understands motorcycles and fabricating equipment using machining tools. A sympathetic expert can often build a solution thats not otherwise available. 3. There is no currently functioning national organization for disabled riders. All three facts can be traced back to two central reasons: The number of disabled riders is small and each persons situation is different. A company producing, for example, a lever system allowing a rider to operate the rear brake via a hand lever might only be able to sell a few a year. Its an important market to those few customers, but not something a company can produce to make a profit. The other reason few companies offer products for disabled riders is concern over liability issues. Tomco Conversions, a company that used to custom-build sidecar rigs for wheelchair users, was chased out of business by a liability lawsuit. Rick Oliver, owner of Tomco, said he enjoyed helping get riders on the road for seven years, but could no longer face the liability risk. So what do you do if youre a rider facing disabilities that threaten to keep you off a bike? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------First, read the personal experiences of other riders for inspiration. Second, check out the list of companies that offer products that might be helpful. Third, consider which existing motorcycles may completely or partially solve the problem. A rider unable to use his right foot might need nothing more than a motorcycle with linked brakes, something several models are equipped with straight from the factory. A person who cannot operate a hand clutch might be happy with the new scooters, which have full-sized engines and no clutch. Fourth, and perhaps most importantly, if you dont have the fabrication skills to complete the modifications needed on your own bike, in a way that will get you on the road safely, seek out an expert who can help you. Ask your riding buddies, visit local machine shops and quiz area mechanics until you find someone who can help you put the finishing touches on the modifications you need. Then get out on the road and enjoy life The companies and individuals listed within this link, sell products that may be helpful to motorcyclists with disabilities. These listings do not imply an endorsement of these companies by the AMA and the AMA has neither tested nor evaluated the products. Modifying a motorcycles original design may create new risks. NEW YEARS SIRLOIN w/PEPPERCORN SAUCE (inspired by Michael Symons recipe on The Chew) 1-1/2 lbs. of Beef Sirloin; sliced into 1/2 thickness *If you ring the bell and ask the Butcher of any supermarket chain , they will gladly do this for you. Drizzle of High-Quality Olive Oil 3 Cloves of Garlic - leave skin on, but smash with middle of knife blade so its garlic bulb is flat. 1/3 Cup of Cognac 1/3 Cup of Quality Beef Stock 1/2 Cup of Drained Green Peppercorns (in spice aisle at large chain supermarket) 2 Tbls. Spicy Brown Mustard 2 Tbls. Real Butter 1/4 Cup of Fresh Parsley or dried will work, just rub it between hands to release the potency. Salt & Freshly Cracked Black Pepper *I do this recipe w/ Filet Mignon, but Sirloin is def. a much more financially feasible way to go, especially if serving more than two. If you have a large (10 or 12) cast iron pan, this is the way to go, if you dont, then just use a highquality non-stick skillet pan. Get your pan screamin hot over medium-high heat. Drizzle in high-quality Olive Oil to completely cover bottom of pan. Salt & fresh black pepper season both sides of your steaks generously. Place them one by one in the pan and DO NOT TOUCH them once placed. This allows for perfect carmelization. At this time, toss in your smashed garlic cloves to get that flavor into the steaks. Cook exactly 2-1/2 mins. on each side for medium rare, 3 minutes for medium. Once each side is beautifully browned, remove and let the steaks rest on a side plate. Add your Cognac to the pan; (step back so you dont singe your eyebrows); turn down to medium heat, let the alcohol burn off, remove garlic pieces and any skins, add peppercorns and beef stock and mustard. Stir until all well incorporated together, then add butter and swirl around until totally melted. Turn off heat and add steaks back into pan and take a large spoon and repeatedly keep covering each steak with peppercorn sauce. Take your tongs and place each steak (total of 5) onto a serving platter with all

steaks in a row, pour the scrumptious sauce all over the steaks generously. Top with parsley. This is so easy and tastes like a steak youd order in a 5-star restaurant...... but tastes better because its home. GINGER ALE GLAZED CARROTS 1 Bag of Peeled Baby Carrots (in fresh produce section) 3/4 Cup of Quality Ginger Ale Next, mix up the following ingredients: 2 smashed cloves of garlic 1 Tbls. of Ginger (dried is o.k.) 1/4 Cup of Chopped, Toasted Hazelnuts (in nut section of grocery) 1/4 Cup of Parsley (dried is o.k.) Olive Oil for drizzling 2 Oranges; zested and juiced; divided Salt & Fresh Cracked Pepper Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a large bowl, toss the carrots with 5 Tbls. of olive oil and salt & pepper generously. Zest 1 orange over & juice over top carrots. Add garlic cloves and toss up good to coat evenly. Get a nonstick skillet heated up over medium-high heat. Arrange all the carrots in an even layer. Pour in the Ginger Ale and cook on the stove top until they begin to turn bright orange. Place skillet in oven (if handle is not oven-proof, just wrap it in aluminum foil). Cook or30 mins. in oven. Remove and in a small bowl take 2nd orange and juice, hazelnuts, parsley and salt & pepper and pour all over the hot carrots. Drizzle with honey if want. These are festive & fab! SNOW ON THE ROOF BROWNIES Buy your favorite brand of box Brownie mix. Make it up in the bowl, add in any of your favorites; chopped pecans, chopped macadamia nuts (my fave), raisins, cranberries, chocolate chips, whatevs....bake as directed; making sure to spray pan down well with nonstick, then flour lightly. When done, invert onto a plate, the re-invert onto another plate so you have brownies upper side up and not the bottom. Let cool totally. Then take a full jar of quality Marshmallow Creme and swirl it all over the top very heavy & generously. Yo-Yum HAPPY NEW YEARS BIKERS! WE LOVE YALL!
