Living the Story with Pastor Jeni

If its January, it means its time to make resolutions and changes. The number one resolution each year seems to be: lose weight and get healthier. And so everyone heads to the gym. Resolutions often do not last, not because they are not good and healthy and wise, but because they are challenging. They stretch us and force us to make hard choices. And the temptations are there to go back to the way things were. Change is hard. Flannery OConnor once wrote: All human nature vigorously resists grace because grace changes us and the change is painful. Weve encountered some change at Glyndon Lutheran in the last year, just as we will in the years to come. And, as we find during the beginning of the year, change is hard. We like things the way they were because it is comfortable for us, we know what we are doing and we know what to expect. And so we resist change because change is hard, and sometimes, change is painful. We dont change just to change or because we are bored; change often brings about far too much work and stress! We make changes because we wish to make church more accessible, to meet people where they are in their lives, to welcome people into our midst, into Christs church, into the very grace of God which is always changing us. The hope of our faith isnt to go back to the way things were as if there was a time when everything was perfect and right. The church is not a museum, but a place for people to encounter God and one another. And God is always on the move. Do not fear, the church in every age has struggled with change. Even in the good ol days. We cant go back to the way things were. We can step into Gods future with faith and confidence. All members are welcomed and encouraged to participate in our Annual Meeting, taking place on January 27th following worship. In this meeting we will discuss how we hope to be a church together in the year to come. We will elect new boards so that decisions can be made by the whole church. We will pass a budget to help us see how we will act as a church. As we change, we do it together. And we do it for the glory of God. Your hands, your eyes, your hearts, your words, your minds are needed to help us be church together. In Christs love, Pastor Jeni

When I was in Elementary School I was in WINGS at church, I know that Glyndon Lutheran had WINGS as well. One of the Bible verses that stuck with me was Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, Hebrews 4:12a. I am not sure why that one stuck and others didnt, maybe it was because it seemed weird to me to think of the Bible like that, alive, active. I was fortunate to have a mom that was very involved at church, not only teaching my Sunday School classes and helping with Vacation Bible School, but I got to experience my mom helping at church making banners, serving coffee. But I think the most influential thing that my mom did for my faith life was go to Bible Studies. She was involved with Bethel, Search, and of course Circle. I got to go to these Bible Studies with my mom, mostly because I think that my mom didnt trust my brother to babysit me. I saw in her how learning about the Bible, Jesus, God, being in fellowship, praying together was something that did not end with Sunday School or Confirmation. Learning and growing was a life-long thing.

There have been numerous studies done that young people learn from what adults in their lives do more than they say. A speaker at a teacher in-service I was part of, when I taught down in the Cities, spoke on being a positive role model to your students. The speaker mentioned drinking water in front of your students shows them that it is important and healthy. And let your students see you with a book, to show them that reading is important to you as well. The practice I am going to work on this new year is the practice of studying. It is easy for me to read the Bible to get ready for Sunday/Wednesday School, working on the Connect lesson for the 5th and 6th graders, or reading the scripture to write the prayers for worship. But I have to admit, that I have not been the greatest at reading/studying scripture for my devotions. Reading the Bible is important, something to do, and something to be caught doing.

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in trials and temptations; give courage to face perils that surround them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Eternal rest, grant, O Lord, and light perpetual shine. Kathy Tollefson
