man asked his wife what she would like for her 40th birthday. Id love to be six again, she replied. So on the morning of her birthday, he got her up bright and early and o they went to the local theme park. What a day! He took her on every ride in the park: the Death Slide, the Screaming Loop, the Wall of Fear, everything there was! Five hours later she staggered out of the theme park, her head reeling and her stomach turned upside down. After leaving the park, they went right to a restaurant where her husband ordered a kids meal along with extra fries and a refreshing chocolate shake. en, it was o to the movies to see the new cartoon adventure that had just been released. Finally, at the end of the day she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bed. He leaned over her and lovingly said: Well dear, what was it like being six again? With one eye barely open she replied: You fool, I meant my dress size! How is it that we so often misunderstand each others intentions? We act without thinking or reecting on the ramications of our decision. We can be impetuous and impulsive, hasty and reckless, and before we know it, the damage is done! I am reminded of such a story from the Torah that we read each summer, a story of a man who means well but does great damage along the way. Pinchas, Aarons grandson, one day saw Zimri, a leader of the Israelite nation, publicly desecrating and aunting his idolatry and his passion for the Midianite princess Cozbi. Seeing Zimris complete disregard for the established Israelite moral code, Pinchas quickly became incensed and without hesitation, he killed both of them. e commentator Divrei Shaul explained that Pinchas acted on his own, without consultation, without any preparation, and without any prior planning, merely as the result of an internal drive for justice and resolution. Pinchas doesnt think, he doesnt discuss, he doesnt even hold court! Instead, he simply kills two people he believed were acting immorally in a moment of anger and resentment. e Torah itself seems to imply an extreme discomfort with Pinchas and his act of righteousness. In Numbers 25:11, the Hebrew letter yud in Pinchas name is written smaller than the rest of the letters. And in verse 25:12 the word shalom, peace, is written with a broken vav. What can we make of this? Perhaps it is the Torahs way of expressing a certain level of disdain with his fanatical action. In this way, the Torah displays that Pinchas very name and his identity is reduced as a direct result of his extremism. And we

know from our own experience in the world that true peace is fragile and easily shattered by excessive zealousness and extremist responses. Even in the midst of our darkest hours, our tradition is extremely uncomfortable with the thought of allowing extremism into mainstream Jewish thought and practice. As the summer comes upon us, so do two holidays that usher in a reective time, a time that begs us to examine our responses in the face of violence. Beginning with the conclusion of Shabbat on Saturday night, July 7, we usher in a three week period on the Jewish calendar where we remember the ancient Temple in Jerusalem and we mourn its destruction in 586 BCE by the Babylonians and in 70 CE by the Romans (it was rebuilt in between). Shivah Asar BTammuz, the 17th day of the Hebrew month of Tammuz, which we commemorate on Sunday, July 8 as a fast day, begins the march toward Tisha BAv, the 9th of the Hebrew month of Av observed on Saturday evening July 28- Sunday, July 29, 2012 (a 25 hour fast). ere is no question that it would be easy to blame the Babylonians and the Romans for rising up against us and destroying our most holy Temple. But even at the brink of the potential disappearance of our people and our history, our ancestors refused to blame our enemies for this inconceivable act of terror perpetrated against our ancestors. Instead, the traditional Jewish response to this unthinkable destruction was for our people to point their ngers inward in an honest, reective fashion, asking: What have I done? What have we done to bring about this horrid and unimaginable situation? e Talmud in Tractate Yoma (9b) similarly expresses this personal approach to the Temples destruction where it says that the reason for the destruction of the First Temple was our idolatry and the spilling of innocent blood. According to the rabbis, the destruction of the Second Temple was a direct result of the baseless hatred and resentment that the people felt for one another. While there are times to be zealous and jump into action to defend our beliefs and all that we hold dear as Pinchas did, our tradition tends to lean toward engaging in a ritual known as chesbon hanefesh, turning inward and examining our own actions in the face of adversity. Yes, it is often easier to jump into action, pointing the nger of blame at someone else and holding them responsible for the misunderstanding. Yet thisperiod on the Jewish calendar (as we begin preparing for the High Holydays) counsels us to take the more dicult road, looking inward and asking ourselves: How can we make ourselves better people in the year to come? It is the answer to this question that will guide us in the days and weeks ahead!

THE PRAYERS OF THE HIGH HOLY DAYS
9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. with Rabbi Joseph Krakoff Perhaps it is ironic that during the days on the Jewish calendar when we have the highest population of Jews in the synagogue we present the most complex liturgical collection of the entire year. Even someone well-versed in daily/Shabbat/Holiday prayer could easily be confused by the Rosh Hashanah/Yom Kippur prayer structure. Not only will we examine the how all the prayers fit tightly together, but we will focus on the major themes/ideas of the High Holy Day prayers in an attempt to make the liturgy come to life before our very eyes. Tuition: $35

THE HIGH HOLY DAY TORAH PORTIONS

10:45 a.m.-11:45 a.m. with Rabbi Aaron Starr Our rabbis could have assigned any part of the Torah they wanted to be read on these holiest of days: the two days of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. Why did they choose the portions we read? What lessons did the rabbis seek to impart through the readings of these Torah portions? What is so controversial about them that some synagogues changed the portions? Ready yourself for the Days of Awe through this study of the complex meaning of the High Holy day Torah portions.

Message from the President: The future is bright

Steven Margolin
Delivered at the Annual Meeting May 9, 2012

MEMBERSHIP

t has been an honor and a privilege to be the President of Congregation Shaarey Zedek during the celebration of our 150th anniversary. To borrow a line from Rabbi Groner: My job tonight is to speak and your job is to listen. Hopefully, I will stop speaking before you stop listening. I know that I speak for everyone when I say how much I wish Rabbi Groner was here tonight and I wish him a Refuah Shelema. I am glad that Leypsa is able to be here. It has been a rough couple of months for my dad who has been in and out of the hospital with pneumonia and a lung infection. ank God he is home and doing better. While he was in the hospital I came in one day and he was not feeling well, did not feel like talking and kept falling asleep. So I sat there, and then he opened his eyes and asked me a question. e question was not what you would think. He did not ask about me or Beth or our girls. He asked, Stevie how is Congregation Shaarey Zedek? is wonderful place touches our deepest thoughts, our deepest emotions, our neshoma, our soul. So tonight I will give you the same response that I gave to him, Dad, dont worry, Congregation Shaarey Zedek is doing just ne and there is a lot going on. Let me elaborate. At last years annual meeting I told you that you would soon be hearing about our year-long 150th anniversary celebration and I encouraged everyone to participate, celebrate and enjoy. I am extremely proud of the programming and the participation. We have touched so many congregants. We started with vignettes and group aliyot during the High Holy Days. ere was a bus tour where we saw some of our old synagogues and our rst cemetery. We had special Shabbatot where congregants, once again, acknowledged their Bnai Mitzvah, graduations, consecrations, weddings and auf rufs. We created a voice quilt where congregants could record their memories of Congregation Shaarey Zedek and we created a collage of pictures from congregants that is proudly displayed in the foyer. For those of you who have not done so, I urge you to sign Congregation Shaarey Zedeks Golden Book. It is here tonight. is historic leather bound book was rst signed in 1932 when the Congregation moved into the Chicago Boulevard Synagogue. Since then it has been signed on our 120th anniversary and subsequent celebrations. White gloves have traditionally been worn when signing. I want to thank Judy Cantor, our archivist, for ensuring that this tradition continues. But the celebration is not over. Cantor Finkelstein has composed a cantata entitled Gates of Righteousness e Story of

Shaarey Zedek, which sets to words and music events that have occurred during our illustrious history. e cantata will be performed by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra with Leonard Slatkin conducting. e concert will be in the main sanctuary at Shaarey Zedek on the evening of June 7 and compositions from other Jewish composers will be performed as well. ere is no charge for members and I want to thank Henrietta and Alvin Weisberg for sponsoring this event. Please encourage everyone to attend. We will be ending our year-long celebration on Saturday, October 27 with a huge birthday bash. ere will be dinner, dancing with great bands and a DJ. ere will be many surprises and I guarantee it will be a night to remember. Please contact Suzi Terebelo, who is helping to plan this event for more information. I extend a special thank you to all of the volunteers who have worked so hard to make the 150th anniversary events such a huge success. What is truly amazing is that besides all of the 150th anniversary activities and celebrations we added a multitude of new programs to our already busy calendar. We have programs for every age and every demographic and they cover a broad spectrum. From music to food to childrens activities to learning to art to gemilut chasidim. e following are some of the new programming and events that have occurred during the year. is is in addition to our normal staples which include our holiday celebrations, Rabbi Krako s Monday night study class, Music and Motzi, our Purim extravaganza sponsored by the Katzman family, the many events of the Mens Club, our Shabbat lunches, our Shabbat retreat for young families to Tamarack and Sisterhoods annual Louis Linden Nelsons Womans World. So here are the new events. Under the category of Art, we had trips to the Toledo Glass Museum, e DIA and Pewabic Pottery. Under the category of Food we had Sur La Table Cooking classes, cooking with Quality Kosher Catering, and cooking with Annabel Cohen. Under the category of Learning, we had lunch and learn sessions with Cantor Finkelstein and Dr. Jack Wertheimer was our scholar in residence thanks to the generosity of Beverly Baker. We had Sunday morning news featuring local media personalities; we had Martinis and Mishna with Susan Krako and Rebecca Starr, and we had the 9/11 Interfaith Commemoration led by Rabbi Krako. Under the category of Music we have had 3 concerts performed here by the DSO and their nal concert is here tomorrow night; we had another unbelievable Hebrew School

CONGREGATION SHAAREY ZEDEK WWW.SHAAREYZEDEK.ORG

Musical entitled Miriam Poppins, written by Monica and Cantor Finkelstein and we had a performance by Sean Blackman during our Selichot Service; and we had two wonderful concerts with the Maccabeats thanks to the generosity of the Sandra Davis Memorial Fund. Under Childrens Activities we had Winnie the Pooh and Rabbi Starr too; we had Tuesday morning story time; we made pancakes with Curious George and the Rabbi in the Yellow Hat and we had Toy Story Pesach. In the category of Gemilut Chasadim, Assistant Cantor Leonard Gutman, in coordination with our Sunshine Committee has been teaching congregants to lead a Shiva minyan so that we can better comfort members during times of sorrow. We had over 120 students participate in the fall x up program and twice we have had over 130 volunteers at Forgotten Harvest. We partnered with Young Israel of Southeld in growing vegetables and donating them to Yad Ezra. I of course would be remiss if I did not mention some of the new events that Sisterhood has sponsored. For example Game Day ursdays have been a huge success and I cant wait to see the new Torah covers. All of the activities that I have mentioned do not happen by accident. I want to thank Rabbi Krako, Rabbi Starr, Cantor Finkelstein and Assistant Cantor Gutman for all of their hard work and dedication. I also want to thank Janet Pont, Shelley Golsky, Tobye Bello, Ron Miller, and Keith Armbruster and the rest of the sta who have stepped up and made sure we did not skip a beat while we searched for an executive director. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my ocers Mary Knoll, Larry Nemer, Jeri Fishman, Rob Goodman and Janice Stoneman. Because we have not had an executive director for well over a year they have spent an inordinate amount of time working at the synagogue and giving of their time. More importantly, they lead by example. Rarely is there a Shabbat or an event where they are not in attendance. I could not have asked for a better set of ocers. Recently, Megan Topper, our Jewish Family Educator announced that she wanted to change career paths and will be leaving us. I want to thank Megan for her years of service to our congregation and we wish her well in her new endeavor. We are in the process of nding a replacement for her. Lets talk about the future. I want to formally introduce our new executive director Shira Shapiro. Shira, will you please stand so that we may acknowledge you. Shira comes to us with great experience, having served as executive director of Forest Hills Jewish Center, a large Conservative Shul in Queens, New York. Most recently, she has been employed as a senior planning associate at e Jewish Federation of Metro Detroit. ose experiences in addition to her Masters Degree from Boston University in Management promise to provide us with leadership that will further enable us to serve as a pillar of the Detroit Community and the Conservative movement. You all know that we are currently counting the days between Pesach and Shavuot which is known as counting the Omer. Shira will be starting on June 4 and I have been counting the days until she starts, which I refer to as counting the Shira. Let me assure you that even though we have not had an executive director, your ocer group has scrutinized every line item in the budget and every expenditure. We have done a good job cutting expenses but there is only so much cutting that can be done. To continue our outstanding level of pro-

gramming and service to our congregants we must increase our 11 fundraising. I urge you if you are able to be a patron at the June 7, 150th anniversary celebration concert. ere will also be a giving opportunity at our 150th birthday bash on October 27 as we will be compiling a family journal. I also want to take this opportunity to thank the Davidson Foundation for their generous gift this year and their continued support and I again want to thank those who are paying premium dues. We must and we will soon embark on a campaign to substantially grow our endowment so as to insure the long term nancial stability of our Shul. Speaking of donations, I am reminded of the story of the IRS agent who calls the head Rabbi of the Shul and asks if Izzie Cohen is a member of the Synagogue? Yes replies the Rabbi. e IRS agent then asks the Rabbi to conrm that Mr. Cohen has made a $100,000 contribution to the Shul. And the Rabbi responds, He soon will be. e Religious School task force under the leadership of Je Linden has been diligently working with Rabbi Starr to explore the needs and desires of our religious school family. Leaving no stone unturned they have created new mission and vision statements. In addition, they continue to review and improve the curriculum and Religious School structure to better reect the expectations of the 21st century student. e Technology Committee under the leadership of Jon Dwoskin has been working to improve our technology capabilities. While we have improved our web site, further upgrades will be made. While congregants who are unable to physically attend services can call in to listen, we need to have the ability to stream to those who have computers both sight and sound. Hopefully this will be in place for the High Holidays. Technology is a further means of being able to touch and connect with our congregants. Rabbis Krako and Starr have begun tweeting. We must take advantage of the most current innovations in technology to connect and interact with our congregants. is certainly applies to young singles, young marrieds and young families. We must do a better job in connecting with these groups. What has worked in the past does not necessarily work now. Miriam Rosensweig from the Jewish Federation and who is the director of Next Gen addressed our board on the challenges that we face and some of the eorts that we need to make. New innovative approaches will be utilized to attract young members. In addition, we need your help. Please act as our ambassadors. Did you know that anyone under 30 does not have to pay dues? I am sure that our youngest and newest board member Hy Safran will help us in this endeavor. I want to welcome Hy to the board who by the way is the thirdrd generation of his family to serve on our board. I also want to welcome Milt Feldberg to the Board and welcome back Kari Alterman. I also want to thank all of the current board members for their dedication, hard work and support and I look forward to working with all of you during the coming year. Before I conclude I want to thank Beth and our three daughters, Amy, Judy and Rachel for putting up with me during the past year and tell them how much I love them. I also want to thank Beth for her love and support. I could never do this job without you and I so appreciate your advice and encouragement. So Stevie, how is Congregation Shaarey Zedek? As you can see, I think I properly answered my Dads question. Congregation Shaarey Zedek is doing just ne, there are a lot of great things going on and make no mistake, the future is bright.

I want to thank everyone who supported Sisterhoods Lois Linden Nelson Womans World event! Whether you gave us your time and eort, or your nancial support, Sisterhood thanks you. It was a successful, delightful day! We enjoyed ann Baruch, our Woman of Valor, who spoke so beautifully after her daughter, Miriam goldberg lovingly introduced her. kate White, our keynote speaker, was engaging, funny, and gave us all some life lessons to remember. We had a delicious lunch and shoppers loved having new vendors. Susan kozik klein and her team of hard working women did an amazing job. Every detail was covered. We all appreciated Jeri Fishman and Suzi Terebelo bringing in the new vendors, and Eileen glogower and Wendy arnold who managed them the day of the event. annabel Cohen served them in true Annabel style. ank you to seating committee Jacqui Elkus, Miriam goldberg, Sandi Matz, Joanne Robinson for the hours and hours they spent on reservations and seating. Julie nelson klein helped in so many ways. We appreciated how she managed our webpage. Mary knoll whipped up Kate White Cosmos for the pre-glow. Candy Cuttner, Bethany kramer, Sally krugel, Sandi Matz, Marjorie Saulson, alice Silbergleit, June Stillman, and Suzi Terebelo collected many great prizes. Our very own karen katz won the grand Neiman Marcus prize! Marcia Boxman, our photographer, captured the memories of the day. Ruth kremer, a new Sisterhood member, helped with her marketing skills. karen katz and Ronna Ross made sure we had the needed volunteers. Ruthe goldstein and Robin lash worked long and hard as the head cashiers. lorraine Feber, nancy Finkel, Sally krugel, Frieda langnas, June Stillman, and Jeannie Weiner set up the day before. ank you to Joanne Robinson, our special LLN WW treasurer for all you did. karen Couf-Cohen tried to recruit new members for us with the help of Helene Cherrin. June Stillman beautifully decorated the tables with a Cosmo theme. Debbie Balkin, Judie Blumeno, Joan Brode, Sandy Boykansky, Helene Cherrin, Candy Cuttner, Pamela David, nancy goldberg, Beth Margolin, Mickey gold, Cookie lachover, Shirley levin, Sara Manson, Marlene Margolis, Janet Pont, Debby Rosen, Rusty Rosman, Marjorie Saulson, Elizabeth Tam, and Jennifer Teper all had various jobs from cashier, photo table, callers, or just jumping in to help wherever they were needed. I thank you all. As always, we thank laynie langnas for the extra hours she gave to make sure all went well. We also want to thank keith armbruster and his CSZ sta, larry Tremblay, Bob Charlton, allen Rutledge, and adrian Homes for helping us with everything. We know we could not do it without them! Every one of you was needed. We did this together. ank you all from the bottom and top of my heart! Wendy arnold is busy planning our opening meeting in September! Mary knoll will give us a mixology lesson, so we can learn how to make fabulous drinks. Your ticket in will be your Sisterhood membership. Debby Rosen and Cookie lachover are already planning our Torah Fund Luncheon for October 30. We are so fortunate and thankful to anna levin for graciously oering to host the day for us. Last, but certainly not least, I want to express the sadness our board feels to lose one of our own dedicated members, Renee Simon. Renee passed away on May 12. Her dedication to our social action causes, and her continuous oers to help whenever and wherever she was needed, spoke volumes about who she was. We will miss her greatly. Our sincere condolences to her whole family. Every day is a gift! Take time to enjoy it. Linda Cohen

CONGREGATION SHAAREY ZEDEK WWW.SHAAREYZEDEK.ORG

s we near the conclusion of Shaarey Zedeks 150th year, I have yet to tire of the question, What is dierent now from 150 years ago? e simple answer, of course, is everything. From population to the economy, from the size of our building to what takes place inside, the founders of Shaarey Zedek 150 years ago would hardly recognize the place! Despite the changes, though, I am condent that they would say that the Shaarey Zedek of 2012 continues to live the values they held dear: family, peoplehood, tradition, leadership. I am particularly struck by the comparison between today and 150 years ago as I prepare to lead a bus of youths on the Jewish Federations Teen Mission to Israel. If only I, as a rabbi, were able to travel to the Promised Land: dayeinu. If only I were able to join some of our Shaarey Zedek members on a trip to Israel: dayeinu. But to bring CSZ students on a trip of more than 100 teenagers to a modern State of Israel in the land owing with milk and honey ... Nes Gadol, a great miracle has happened in our time. I feel entirely blessed that all of us have this incredible opportunity, and am thrilled that so many of our Shaarey Zedek teens chose to seize this chance of a lifetime. One hundred fty years ago, in addition to learning how to live a Jewish life, Jewish children went to school to learn a sort of Jewish catechisma set of responses should a missionary approach them challenging their faiths. Today, while we seek to build knowledgable, practicing Jews with a strong Jewish identity, we do not fear the missionary in the same way they did a century and a half ago. Rather, the catechism with which we now try to inculcate our childrenespecially our teenagers (through ATID: e Alliance for Teens in Detroit), is why the State of Israel has a right to exist and why we as Jews living in 21st century America must support it. Sadly, though the missionary by and large leaves the Jews alone, anti-Zionist hate-mongers and spreaders of historical inaccuracies are alive and well. I pray for a safe trip for all participating on the Teen Mission this summer, and look forward to another group of teens coming back from the Promised Land with a love for Judaism and a love for the Land and State of Israel. ank you for all that you do to support Israela dream one might never have thought possible 150 years agoand for all that you do to support another generation of Jews to visit, love, and sustain the Jewish State.
