Jewish Values Begin at Home

RABBINIC REFLECTION
CONGREGATION SHAAREY ZEDEK WWW.SHAAREYZEDEK.ORG

t seems we live in an age of the fallen hero they seem to quickly, unpredictably and very publicly rise and fall. We see this daily especially in the world of politics, athletics, and media/lm/television. Too often it is only a matter of time until we are disappointed and dismayed by individuals we speedily came to admire. Yet, it is not as much their fault as it is ours. While I do not condone their questionable behaviors, they are human just like us. Yet we are the ones who continue to make our idols larger than life. Despite the fact that we are continually let down, over and over again we are swift to canonize the next hero on our list. So, where can our real idols be found those individuals that embody the values of integrity, honor, sincerity, decency and goodness? Where are our authentic role models? For the most part they are not on television, at the ballpark, on the silver screen or in the headlines. Rather, they are in our homes! When was the last time we looked within our own families and inside our homes for our true heroes? Rabbi Morris Adler of blessed memory taught that Judaism and the teaching of Jewish values begin at home. It begins in homes where Judaism lives and breathes and is consciously integrated into the normal pattern of daily life. It begins in homes where Jewish words are uttered, where Jewish literature and teaching is honored, and Jewish music is played. It begins in homes where children see and participate in ceremonies and experiences that strongly link them to their people and their culture. It begins in homes where Jewish ritual objects are visible and utilized. And it begins in homes where into the deepest layers of a childs personality are woven strands of love for, and devotion to, the life of the Jewish community. We, as parents, grandparents and family friends must be our childrens role models. We must create a boundary for our behavior that ensures we are setting the proper examples. We must remember that our children see everything we do and so in a sense, we model their action and reaction. As role models for our children we must constantly reassess and reevaluate the images we give o and be ever cognizant and careful that our actions are appropriate and suitable, even in our most stressful and trying moments. Although we might already think of ourselves as positive role models, sometimes our best intentions are misunderstood. For this reason, we should pay closer attention to everything we do. It is not only children who grow. Parents and grandparents do too. As much as we watch to see what our children and grandchildren do with their lives, they are watching us to see what we do with ours. While we cant always choose whats going to happen to

us, we can choose our response. And it remains eternally true that we teach our loved ones to reach for the heavens by reaching for it ourselves. Our children are precious, they are special, and they watch our every move. And we each have the unique opportunity in our own families and communities to be a moral and ethical compass, to which others can look for support and guidance. We will make mistakes no doubt, but thankfully God gives us another chance each year, each month and each day to get it right, and to do a better job. It is not perfection that matters most, but compassion, persistence and a good example. ose are always a childs best teacher. As we begin the Jewish New Year 5773 and we embark on the upcoming High Holyday seasonPlease God, let us not wait until it is too late to be the best role models that we know we can be. Let each one of us make sure that we are setting the proper example for our loved ones and in so doing becoming their real and dependable heroes. And so I pray, may we, in the days and weeks ahead, be strong enough to guide our children and grandchildren thoughtfully and carefully, while allowing them to spread their wings and y toward the future, trusting that we have helped create a strong foundation of moral and ethical behavior steeped in a love of life, our tradition and our people. With this in mind, Susan, Atara, Micah and Elan join me in wishing you a Shanah Tovah uMetukah, a sweet, joyous and fullling new year from our home to yours!

Rabbi Krako has authored a new booklet called Jewish Mourning Practices: A Time for Reection and Memory. is outlines and explains the rituals and customs associated with death and mourning. Please call or stop by the synagogue oce for your complimentary copy.

On the night before the Kol Nidrei, we are supposed to wave a chicken (or tzedakah money) above our heads to take away our sins (kappores). The sin-purging ritual performed on Yom Kippur, where a scapegoat takes all our sins and is released into the wilderness, has its origin in the Torah, Leviticus Chapter 16.

Welcome Back!

SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2012 ELUL-TISHREI-CHESHVAN 5772/5773

am proud to tell you that our Religious School Task Force a group of committed Religious School parents and teachersis pioneering a new approach to Jewish education. It is a concept so novel that we are already becoming the model for religious schools nationally. In the coming months, every Religious School family will be contacted, and asked to craft and enter into a Family Covenant: a sacred, personalized contract for accessible, meaningful, tangible steps toward greater Jewish living. But our families will not be asked to make it alone. Rather, Rabbi Krako, our new Jewish Family Educator Alexis Zimberg, and I will be available to serve as facilitators in this family process. We will ask of families, What Jewish values are important to you in general? What specic values do you want to focus on this year as part of your Jewish journey? What specic steps might you be willing to commit to as a family to further your family journey? How can we, as a synagogue, help your family strive for a deeper sense of holiness, purpose, and sense of togetherness? Religious School families commitments will be met by our synagogues, promising to design in-depth, engaging experiences to enable your journey. Our Religious School is dedicated to strengthening our congregational family and sacred community by deepening within its families a love of being Jewish, and by teaching children and parents alike the skills and knowledge necessary to live a meaningful Conservative Jewish life. Imagine if every family at Shaarey Zedek engaged in such a process of reection and striving, as the family covenant oers. Set your heart to [consider] your ways, God commands us (Haggai 1:5). rough introspection, family discussions, and the creation of and entering into family covenants, we can truly lead signicant, meaningful Jewish lives. I hope you will consider joining us in this groundbreaking path. And, if you are not a Religious School family but interested in the Family Covenant process, we look forward to sharing with you in the journey as well. May God grant to each of you and your families, blessing, joy, health and a sense of holiness in this New Year 5773.

ATID is a partnership betweeen ve Conservative synagogues, designed to provide teens in grades eight through twelve with a dynamic, exciting Jewish youth experience. For more information, or to register, please contact Karen Davis at 248/354-5544 or kdavis@shaareyzedek.org

Thursdays, September 6; September 13; September 20 9:30 10:30 a.m., The Prayers of the High Holy days, with Rabbi Joseph Krakoff 10:45 11:45 a.m., The High Holy day Torah portions, with Rabbi Aaron Starr Tuition: $65 for the six-class series, or take either session seperately.

THE PRAYERS OF THE HIGH HOLY DAYS With Rabbi Joseph Krakoff
Perhaps it is ironic that during the days on the Jewish calendar when we have the highest population of Jews in the synagogue we present the most complex liturgical collection of the entire year. Even someone well versed in daily/Shabbat/Holiday prayer could easily be confused by the Rosh Hashanah/Yom Kippur prayer structure. Not only will be examine the how all the prayers fit tightly together, but we will focus on the major themes/ideas of the High Holy day prayers in an attempt to make the liturgy come to life before our very eyes. Tuition: $35

THE HIGH HOLY DAY TORAH PORTIONS With Rabbi Aaron Starr
Our rabbis could have assigned any part of the Torah they wanted to be read on these holiest of days: the two days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Why did they choose the portions we read? What lessons did the rabbis seek to impart through the readings of these Torah portions? What is so controversial about them that some synagogues changed the portions? Ready yourself for the Days of Awe through this study of the complex meaning of the High Holy day Torah portions. Tuition: $35

TAKING OUR INTERNAL TEMPERATURE: THE POWER OF JEWISH PRAYER IN OUR DAILY LIVES With Rabbi Joseph Krakoff
SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2012 ELUL-TISHREI-CHESHVAN 5772/5773 Thursdays, November 1, 8, 15, 29, December 6, 13, 20 11:15 a.m. 12:30 p.m. Does God need our prayers or do we need them? What happens when we pray? Do we change the world or do we transform ourselves? Sometimes we pray so fast in a language we do not entirely understand that it is so easy to miss the point. Prayer is about slowing down and expressing gratitude. We will slow down and delve into the significance and power behind our traditional prayers. It will be an experience sure to bring inspiration and deeper meaning to our lives. Tuition: $100

Rabbi Krakoff Delivers State Senate Invocation

On Wednesday, June 6, Rabbi Krako had the honor of delivering the invocation to open the meeting of our State Senate. Here is an excerpt: It is with humility and with a sense of love, purpose and devotion for our great State of Michigan and the United States of America that we now gather in this holy chamber. In so doing, I turn to our Torah portion taken from the Book of Numbers. Preparing to embark on a 40 year journey to the Land of Israel, God directs the Israelites and blesses their travels, but almost immediately the people get scared and they begin complaining for fear that they will soon be out of food to eat. It is at this point that Moses turns to God in a moment of weakness claiming that the burden of leadership has caught up with him- as Moses admits to being exhausted physically and psychologically, ready to throw up his hands in resignation. ankfully, God quickly comes to the rescue and uplifts Moses spirits by having him get some political help by way appointing a council of 70 elders and ofcers of the people who will assist Moses in governing. e Almighty goes on to imbue each leader with a sense of Ruach Adonai- the spirit of God- as a way of reminding the leaders that they must always serve the people (and themselves) with purpose, distinction and holinessan approach that is just as relevant today as it was in the time of our ancestors e entire invocation is available at www.shaareyzedek.org.

First and foremost, I want to wish all of you a very happy, healthy, and sweet New Year! A great way to begin this year would be to support Sisterhood. Hopefully, you have already received our new tri-fold in the mail. Please take the time to respond! Also, I hope you will attend our upcoming Torah Fund Luncheon. Anna Levin has so graciously oered her home on October 30. Please look for your invitation, coming soon. If you are interested in an adult Bat Mitzvah class, please call the synagogue, or e-mail me at indacohen@gmail.com. We are only able to oer this class if we have approximately 20 adults interested in making a two year commitment. A Hasidic tale: e people of a small village saw a man carry a heavy load on his back, up a steep hill. Daily, he went up and down, up and down. ey were amazed that he never complained about this burden, but instead appeared cheerful. Only the man knew it contained glorious and precious jewels. Now, doesn't that make his load easier to carry? It is all perception! I hope we can sweeten our journey to reach the top of the hill by looking around and seeing the precious jewels God has given us: a congregational family, a spiritual home, a deep sense of tradition, and our Sisterhood friendships as we try to help others. Did you know that this year we helped sponsor the beautiful Torah covers, led by past President Jeri Fishman? raised money to send a child to Tamarack? oered free Hebrew classes? sent holiday packages to our college students? were responsible for our weekly tradition of Shabbat lunches? Please join us this year! Heres an even better oer: pay your dues and join us for dinner on Monday evening, September 10. We have planned a fun night out featuring Mary Knoll, CSZ Vice President, who will share her mixology" talents with us! Help us make a dierence...in your life, your synagogue, and in your community. Please sweeten the journey and watch Sisterhoods jewels sparkle. LShanah Tovah, Linda
