SYLLABUS OPTOELECTRONICS

FALL 2008

Instructor: Aurangzeb Khan, PhD. Office: ECEB51 Phone: 460-6923 Email: akhan@usouthal.edu Office Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday: 10 a.m-11:15 a.m. 12:30-1:30 p.m. or stop by Course Web: http://www.ece.usouthal.edu/khan/ Description: Wave nature of light in free space electronic and optical processes in semiconductors, polarization and modulation of light, semiconductor science and engineering with emphasis of optoelectronic materials and devices, principle of stimulated emission devices-gas lasers and laser diodes, photodetectors, photovoltaic devices, and advanced devices. Goals & Objectives: To provide the student with an in-depth understanding of optoelectronics. Instructional Material: Textbook: Optoelectronics and Photonic Principles and Practice, 1st Edition, S. O. Kasap, Prentice Hall, 2001; ISBN 0201610876 Secondary text books: Semiconductor Optoelectronic Devices, by P. Bhattacharya (2nd Edition, Prentice Hall, Upper Saddle River, 1997) Physics of Semiconductor Devices, by S.M. Sze (2nd Edition, Wiley, New York, 1981) Introduction to Solid State Physics, by C. Kittel (7th Edition, Wiley, New York, 1 Tentative List of Chapters to be covered: Wave nature of light - Plan electromagnetic wave - Snells law and total internal reflection - Multiple interference and optical resonators Semiconductor science and light emitting diodes - Semiconductor concept and energy bands - Semiconductor statistics - pn junction principles - Radiative recombination Light emitting diodes and laser diodes - Principles of light emitting diodes and laser diodes - Device structure Flat panel displays Photodetectors Photovoltaic devices Prerequisites: EE 355 Electromagnetics II and EE356 Electromagnetics Laboratory. Classroom and Schedule: EGCB 0160 at MWF 16:40 p.m. - 17:30 p.m. Class Attendance Policy: Attendance at lectures is mandatory. After three consecutive absences you will be not allowed to

attend the class. If there is an emergency, let me know and it will be decided case-by-case basis.
Attendance at quizzes and tests is mandatory.

Students are responsible for all material covered in the class as well as the announcements for homework assignments, assignment due dates, and test dates.

Number and Type of Examinations to be Given During the Semester: At least eight quizzes, two tests and one final examination will be given. The examination dates will be announced in class, and will cover material discussed in lectures and/or specified part of the textbook. The final exam will be comprehensive, but weighted heavily on material not covered in the tests. Homework, project, quizzes, tests, which are required in this course, have the primary function of helping you learn the material. The secondary function of these assignments is to aid the instructor in assessing your understanding of the material, in particular when the time comes to provide a final grade for the course. Homework assignments are intended nearly exclusively to serve as a learning tool. As such, I am not comfortable with copying amongst students on the solving of these assignments. For grading efficiency, each problem should begin on a new sheet of paper with your name, section number, problem number, and due date across the top of the sheet. In-class, quizzes are important to the instructor in assessing your performance. Collaboration in taking these exams is not permitted. In particular, the take home exam or assignment must be exclusively your own work, and Policy on Make-up Examinations: Make-up tests will be allowed in extenuating circumstances such as death in the family, illness or accident. The make-up examinations decision will be based on verification of appropriate written documentation. Failure to furnish written, verifiable documentation will result in a grade of zero for missed examination. Course Assignments: Homework will be assigned and collected. Grading of homework will depend on the availability of grader. In the case of no grader, homework credit will be given on a 10-point basis. If all problems are solved, the credit will be 10 points. If half of the problems are solved, credit will be 5 points, etc. Penalty for Late Work: All assignments must be submitted on the due date. Late assignments will not be accepted. REIEWW PAPER PRESENTATION: Every student is required to choose recent research papers on a VLSI fabrication topics from journals and give presentation (power point) based on the paper content at the end of the semester and submit a summary of the papers in your own words. Paper discussions are welcomed throughout the semester. Review Paper Emphasis: The important elements sought in the term paper include: a thorough survey of the literature on the subject; an in-depth understanding of the phenomena related to the subject; and an innovative analysis of possible solutions or future directions based on your understanding Grading: Quizzes Tests Project Homework Assignment Final Examination 15% 25% 15% 10% 35%

Grade Assignment: 90 - 100% A, 80 - 89% B, 70 - 79% C, 60 - 69% D, Below 60% F Academic Dishonesty: YOU MAY NOT copy homework from classmates. You may consult with me or one of your classmates if there is a homework problem that you find difficult. Cheating is academic misconduct and will not be tolerated. A course grade of F will automatically be assigned to anyone who cheats on assignments or examinations. Student with Disabilities: In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, students with bona fide disabilities will be afforded reasonable accommodation. The office of Special Student Services will certify a disability and advise the instructor of reasonable accommodations. If you have a specific disability that qualifies you for academic accommodations, please notify the instructor and provide certification from Disability Services (Office of Special Students Services) so that appropriate arrangements can be made. The Office of Special

Students Services is directed by Ms. Bernita Pulmas and is located in the Student Center, Room 270, Phone 460-7212. Changes in Course Requirements: Since all classes do not progress at the same rate, the instructor may wish to modify the course requirements as circumstances dictate. For example, the instructor may wish to change the number and frequency of examinations, or the number and sequence of assignments. If such modification is needed, the student will be given adequate notification. Moreover, there may be non-typical classes for which these requirements are not strictly applicable in each instance and may need modification. If such modification is needed, it will be in writing and will conform to the spirit of this policy statement. Cellular Phones and Beepers: Turn cellular phones and beepers off during the class hour. General: All students must activate their University email address at their earliest convenience. All communication (notices etc.) other than class website will be sent to the student through the University email system. Ask lots of questions! If you dont understand, please feel free to interrupt. Make sure you attend every class, be on time, and keep up with your homework. Finally, enjoy this course!
