A group of wives of plumbing journeymen and apprentices is forming what may be a unique women's auxiliary in Canada. The organizing women's auxiliary to Local 254 o Manitoba of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry may be the first such group in Canada. Such auxiliaries are attached to some locals in the United States. Mrs. Albert Tremorin of St. Vital, provisional president of the Manitoba auxiliary, said in an i n t e r v i e w Thursday the group's first purpose would be to look after "the needs o the wives and children." Author Vilar... says men oppressed

American Male Called Fearful

LONDON (AP) The American male is the most oppressed man in the Western world, says the author of a book that also argues men arc really slaves and women their exploiters. Esther Vilar, author of The Manipulated Man, also thinks that women are stupid and getting more so every day; that men are brilliant but locked into stultifying jobs; that housework is a pleasure and men are deprived of it and that all of this stems from mothers who condition their children into manipulative and slave roles. The book was originally published in West Germany where it made the best-seller list before it was launched in other countries. In London, novelist Kingsley Amis called it "total twaddle" and one reviewer wrote "to know her is to hate her." But others praised the book as the best argument yet against women's lib. Miss Vilar actually wrote the book in New York almost two years ago during a five-month visit. Basically her theory is that the male is brilliant and capable of doing great things with his freedom but his intelligent thoughts frighten him. He seeks the security of the enslaved and marries. "In no other country do mothers so pitilessly train the male infant to perform," Miss Vilar says. "No other society exists where the male sexual drive is exploited for money so unscrupulously." Girls, though born intelligent, Miss Vilar says, are taught they don't have to think because men are going to work for them. Their goal is to find a man to do this. Miss Vilar, 37, was born in Argentina of German parents who were divorced when she was three years old. After graduating from medical school she practised for one year, then studied psychology and sociology and became a \ales representative for a pharmaceutical company so she could support her writing career. In 19G1, she married Klaus Wagn, a German writer. They were divorced two years later after the birth of a son, Marlin, now nine. Miss Vilar says her former husband is still the most important man in her life. When she is away publicizing her books, he lives in her home to care for their son.

SUCCESSFUL
DEAR DORIS:

by don's dark
I ' m so embarrassed! My mother let me help with my sister's going-away party (because she has work in a distant city) but my father ruined the whole thing. He has a terrible temper and he got real mad when, some boys crashed the party and made a lot of noise with their motorcycles. He is prejudiced against teen-agers anyway, and he threatened to come home (from a neighbor's across the road) with a whip and straighten them out. It was all my mother could do to stop him. The party had been going so well, too. But we had to break up before midnight. All the kids were so nice about it and left without a fuss. Next day we really got ; blast and I got grounded (I'm just 15 and he can boss me) with the added warning never to go to another party. Mother did not want to oppose Dad because he might start drinking again, and he is trying to stop. SUBJECT TO TYRANT DEAR SUBJECT: Sorry. Fathers with terrible tempers shouldn't happen to a dog. But did you know thai such madness is just that a bit of unbalance? The drinking is another sign that he hasn'l got everything under control. As for the impossible prohibition on your ever attending another party how could he make that one stick? Time will change things. If there is a branch o Al-Anon and Alateen in your area, atten dance at their group sessions could help you understand am cope. And if he is serious abou w a n t i n g to quit, Alcoholics Anonymous could well be o great help to him. It w a s really the nois; crashers who ruined things wasn't it? They must have known there were no adults a home. How about that? * * * DEAR DORIS: When a bride sends out ac knowledgements for gifts at bridal shower, whose signature
