Stealing design aesthetics from coin-operated arcade racers of yesteryear, Need For Speed Shift and 0-60 Magazine bring you this step-by-step how-to on building the ultimate driving console that not only can be built for around $500 in raw material costs (sans electronics) but also looks the part. Over the next 60+ pages, you will find detailed instructions on recreating the R-CADE. All you need to do now is to get the parts below and make a trip to the hardware store. Bring a pick-up truck.

SPARCO ChRONO ROAD

That beat-up Barcalounger you normally game in isnt built for racing this intense. The Chrono Road however, is. Big bolsters and an adjustable seatback will help you game to your max.

SONY PS3

Sporting a new, slim body and a price drop, the PS3 is a great fit with the R-CADE. Especially with 120 gigs of memory at your disposal to save those highlight reels.

SAMSuNG LN40B550

Packing 40-inches of high-def, LCD displaying power, this Samsung will help make the action on screen seem more real than your commute to the office.

LOGITECh G27

The G27 packs a proper 3-pedal arrangement along with a shifter and leather wrapped wheel, helping make it the most realistic steering setup available. Perfect for a game like Shift.

LOGITECh G51

Your racing experience isnt complete without sound, and the G51 delivers. Its a 155-watt, 5.1 surround sound speaker and subwoofer system thatll shake your core with every crash.

About the Hood

The R-CADE driving console is a two part designa screen hood and a cockpit base. The reason for this is three-fold. The first was to make the unit less cumbersome. The second was to give the option to those with either limited space or unable to dedicate a flat screen TV to this unit to build just the base. And the third was to allow the user to change the distance to the screen. The first step of the R-CADE assembly will be to construct the hood. Before making any cuts it is important that you measure the TV you plan on using for the R-CADE to assure that it will fit. If not, you can make adjustments to the width to accomodate a bigger screen. The hood should fit up to a 42-inch flat screen display.

READ! Browse through this entire instruction manual before starting this build.

HOOD Side Wall Cuts

(SW1) (SW2) Side Wall 1 & 2 Cut the right and left side walls out of two sheets of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) as per specs. These two panels are the most complicated cuts of the entire assembly. It is recomended that you trace out the entire panel first and draw the arc before you cut. After all the straight cuts are made the edges need to be rounded. This will be easier to do after final assembly. The curves can be accomplished with either a router or hand sander.
HOOD ASSEMBLY

HERES A TIP! Measure twice, cut once and then measure once again. Unless you are using a CNC mill for cuts, there is a good chance that your dimensions may differ slightly requiring you to adjust your measurements along the way.

About the Base

The R-CADE base is a modular design, consisting of four main parts: the platform, the left and right side cabinet, and the steering mount. Each of these parts bolt together allowing disassembly of the base for storage or moving. This unit was designed to work with the Logitech G27 steering wheel, shifter and pedals. Use of any other system may require modifications to the design. The center width should accomodate most race-style bucket seats. The left cabinet storage compartment will fit either a PS3 or Xbox console.

The first step in building the R-CADE base is to construct the platform. The seat base here is intended to work with most seat bracket designs, but it is advised that you double check the width of your seat and seat rails and adjust accordingly.

About the Steering Mount

The R-CADE steering mount is designed to provide both tilt and telescope adjustment to accomodate different size users. The mount also swings up 90 degrees to allow for simple ingress and egress from the unit. This mount along with a sliding seat rail makes it possible for users ranging from small children to adults as tall as 610 to use the R-CADE.

About the Final Assembly

Once all of the sub-assemblies are constructed the base goes together in only a few more simple steps. Some may find it easier to paint the base before final assembly, but it can be done either way.

PAINTING

Priming and Painting the R-Cade

Though the R-CADE can be primed and painted after completion, completing these steps before it is fully assembled will make things easier in the long run and help for a professional finish. Make sure that the surfaces of the MDF are clean, sanded and dust free before adding a coat of oil-based primer, as water-based can make MDF bubble and crack. If you arent satisfied with the first coat, lightly sand and repeat. When you are ready to paint, make sure to use a good oil-based paint, preferably satin finish. Also, you can install the carpet at this time on the bottom of the base, which will negate the need for painting it. However, make sure to overlap the edges where the carpet will lay to ensure a seamless finish. *A proper facemask is also recommended when sanding, cutting or shaping MDF due to harmful dust particulates.
