Nicole Beck & Megumi Hoshi Discipline Review Plan December 5, 2012 We found our districts discipline plan

in the District Parent/Student Handbook for Mahomet Seymour Community schools. I was given this handbook at Lincoln Trail Elementary but it can also be found at http://www.ms.k12.il.us/sites/default/files/districtparentstudenthandbook.pdf. This handbook is issued for the 2012-2013 school year. The district has authorized to discipline students for the following behaviors: using, possessing, distributing, purchasing or selling tobacco, alcohol, any illegal drug, or drug paraphernalia. using, possessing, controlling or transferring a weapon using electronic devices (i.e. cell phones and recording devices) that disrupt the learning environment or violates the rights of others Disobeying staff rules engaging in academic dishonesty involvement in any hazing, bullying or aggressive behavior attempting to steal school or another persons personal property being absent without an excuse Being involved with any public school fraternity, sorority, or secret society Being involved in gangs or gang-related activities Violating any criminal law

One of the sections provided in the discipline plan regards to when these disciplinary consequences may apply. Disciplinary actions will take place if the behavior occurs on school grounds, off school grounds at a school function, traveling to or from a school function, or any other place and time that deals with the school. The next section deals with what disciplinary measures may take place. The following included under this heading: Reprimand.

Personal counseling. Withholding of privileges Suspension from school and all school-sponsored events for up to 10 days Suspension of bus riding privileges Expulsion from school and all school-sponsored events for a definite period of time not to exceed 2 complete school years

Notification of juvenile authorities whenever the conduct involves illegal activity and/or drugs (controlled substances), look-alikes, alcohol or weapons

Notification of parent(s)/guardian(s) which may include Parent/Teacher or Parent/Administrator conference(s)

Removal from the classroom. In-school suspension for a period not to exceed 5 consecutive school days Detention or Saturday Supervised Study Restitution

There are four levels categorized under acts of misconduct. Level 1 is very minor offenses. The disciplinary actions for this level include reprimand, detention, parent call, parent/teacher conference, and parent/administrator conference. Level 2 is for slightly more serious offenses. The disciplinary actions for Level 2 include detention, parent/administrator conference, social probation, in-school suspension, Saturday supervised study or suspension. Level 3 offenses are considered especially serious. These actions result in social probation, in school suspension, restitution, Saturday supervised study, suspension and expulsion. Level 4 offenses are the most serious and are dealt with by suspension and expulsion. The layout of this discipline plan is very clear and concise. It states exactly what

behaviors are punishable and how they will be punished. If any student behaves in any stage of misconduct there are clear consequences that will be enforced. These handbooks are distributed to every student in the beginning of the year and must be returned back to the teacher with a signature by the guardian. Teachers are also informed of rules and regulations regarding discipline before the beginning of the school year. Every teacher has a handbook in their classroom so that they are able to look up the disciplinary actions that need to be made according to the behavior taking place at that time. This discipline plan includes a crisis management plan in which they collaborate with the Mahomet police department and other community officials. The district has developed a crisis plan to keep every child safe at the school. All of the aspects of this plan have been included to ensure that there will be a positive school climate and to eliminate negative/problem behaviors. There is also a section devoted to disciplinary actions to take when addressing bullying/hazing. Those behaviors are not tolerated and are dealt with according to the plans in the handbook. We believe that this discipline plan is a very good one. It addresses all aspects of behaviors that could be present in the school. Any potential questions that a parent or guardian might have could be answered by reviewing this handbook. The consequences are clearly laid out and are categorized by level of severity.
