Panca kootaa pancami Vidyaa

The vidya of pancami is found widely in the tantric texts of Mahatripurasundari. This
vidya is found with the uddaraa in the Kuloddheesha gandharva tantra (third Chapter),
Sri Tattva cintamani (tenth chapter) and Sri Vidyaarnava (seventh chapter quoting
Tantrasaaras Sri krama). In addition we find a reference with uddaaraa as the first
mantra of the trailokya Mohana kavaca, which also refers to tantra saaraa sree kramaa,
and also in the beginning of a stotra called tripuraa satvaraaja. The same uddhaaraas
are also seen in the saubhagya ratnaakara paddhatis last chapter.
This Vidyaa is praised as one of the best among all mantras pertaining to Mahaa
Tripurasundari, the other being Sri vidyaa pancadasaksharee. There are five parts ()
found in this mantra with five syllables in each part, making a total of twenty five
syllables. The five aspects of this vidyaa are eternal (nityaa), release from bondage
(muktidaa), pure (shuddhaa), boon of bliss (sukhadaa) and removal of pain
(dukhanaashinee). Although there are five parts are seen, in tune with the Tripura and
Sri vidyaa concept, we find they are named as Vaagbhava, kaamaraaja and sakti
kootaas. The first as such is the vaagbhava koota. The kaamaraaja is divided into three
parts as aadhya, Madhya and anytya koota. The last is the sakti koota. All have five
syllables each. The five aspects of: elements space, air, fire, water and earth; Lords
Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Ishvara and Sadashiva; their saktis- brahmanee, naarayanee,
rudraanee, IShvaree amnd Maaheshvaree; Acts: creation, sustenance, annihilation,
concealment

The following is the mantra got from decoding uddhara all of the above said tantra,
kavaca and stotraa.

4 - (1)

The benefits of chanting this mantra is said to be multiple, viz., parakaaya pravesha
entering into others body, assuming willed forms, the powers to locate treasures and
make medicinal pills, moving in th sky (air), all the eight siddhis from anima, driving
away of lion, tiger, snakes and demi-gods, becomes equal to Shiva. Chanting thousand
times on special days or in cremation ground will yield all desired results, will become
realized when alive (jeevan mukta)
In accordance to the five acts (panca krtyaa) the five kootas are:1. The srishti koota (creative) called vaagbhava has the Para Shiva and
kaamakalaa bijaas which are and respectively, which represent the
substratum of creation (adhaaraa) and the creative movement (Ikshanaa).
2. The sthiti koota (sustenance) called the aadya kaamaraaja has the Devi akshara
(), which can be meditated as the female of of Lord Vishnu.
3. The samhaara koota (annihilation) called kaamaraaja madhya has only the shiva
aksharaas and respectively. This koota is also called svapnavatee
4. The tiroodhaana koota (concealment) called kaamaraaja antya has the unique
beeja of Ishvara- Lalitha sahasranaama says tirodhaanakaree Ishvaree, (The
same bija is in the veeravali mantra for Ishvaraa) ( ). This bija also points to the
vayu tattva and hence the associated service of dhoopa, which is smoke, an
exact camouflage- concealment This koota is also called madhumatee
5. The anugraha koota (Grace) called sakti koota has the sakti bija in the end ().
On an analysis of the bija distribution we are surprised to find :- Five ha, ka, la and hrIm
bijas, two sa , one each of I() and E ( ), totaling to twenty five. The unique E is the
parashiva tattva, the lone I can be taken as the Ikshana for srshti, resulting in the five
ka sakti tattvas viz. cit, aananda, iccha, gyaana and kriyaa sakti, The five hrim will
point to the creative descent into the panca bhuta world shown by ha- aakaashaa, ya
vaayu, ra vahni, sa jala and la prthvi . Thus we find a holistic approach on the
creative descent, thus inferring the sustenance, annihilation, concealment and grace.
On further break up we can find eighteen a, ten ha, six I() , five ka-ra la - bindu(M)- nada, two sa, one E( ) and one ya. The total vowels are thirty
five and total consonants are twenty eight. Thus making the total to sixty three, adding
the entire mantra as a unit (samashti) we get the grand total of sixty four. This can be
interpreted as the sixty four arts (catusshashti kalaas), sixty four yoginis (catusshashti

yogini), the rays (rashmis) of aagynaa cakraa extolling the importance and depth of this
vidyaa.
Interestingly the Srividyaarnava tantra and Sri Tattva cintamani speaks about variations
of the said pancami vidya. The second variation said is on the sakti kuta which will
begin with sa. The mantra is now seen as:
4 - (2)
Then we find a variation in the vaagbhava koota as . Now with the above two
variations in the sakti koota, the new pancami vidyaas will be seen as:
4 - (3)
4 - .(4)
Now one more variation, the first pancami vidyaas vaagbhava koota will beign with
and , with the above two variations in sakti koota will be seen as
4 - (5)
4 - (6)
4 - (7)
4 - (8)
On a whole we find eight variations of the said pancami vidyaa.
Again another variation is found as: - make the Madhya koota of the first pancami vidya
as the regular kaamaraaja koota and the sakti koota as the regular sakti koota , This will
result in addition of a syllable in the middle koota and removal of a syllable in the last
koota, on a whole keeping the total to twenty five syllables. This is now seen as
4 - (9)
Adding the variation of the vaagbhava koota which are seen above will reveal the
following vidyaas4 - (10)
4 - (11)
4 - (12)
Thus on a whole we are able to visualize twelve variations of the pancami vidyaa.
The tantra now points to two more variations of the fourth koota (antya kaamaraaja
koota) of the first pancami vidyaa as: and . Including these two in the
above twelve (eight + four) variations will result in thirty six variations of Pancami
vidyaa.
