MINER KICKS
by the Ball Boy
weekly column
UTEP handled Cameron very easily in an exhibition in the Don Haskins Center. Tucker keeps showing us why he has quickly become a lead role player for the Miners. Tucker is averaging 15.0 points per game and is .625 from the 3-point mark. Bohannon, Tucker and Julian Washburn are all averaging 10+ points with Streeter coming close at 8.7 points. The Miners are coming off a lot of confidence winning 5 of their last 6 games. Colorado State will be very tough but the Miners will be ready for this televised game on CBS Sports Network. The Miners travel to Colorado to face Colorado Springs in what is going to be a touch matchup. Colorado State is lead by a string of Veteran Seniors who have played together for years. Colorado
State(MWC) is currently 11-2 and are 8-0 at home this season. The Rams currently hold a 20- home game winning streak. Lets see if that can be broken. Colorado State has 4 players averaging 10+ points and a 5th player averaging 9.9 points. This win would give UTEP its first win against a MWC school and would only add to their resume of beating a Pac-12 and BIG Ten school. Being their final nonconference game before conference play is a big factor as well.
A lot of things are shaking up in the Mountain West Conference. The Mountain West Conference announced this past weekend that Boise State will remain in the conference instead of leaving to the Big East. This could trigger a lot of things around the country. San Diego State is on its way out and this could potentially keep them in as well. Mountain West is also talking with several Texas schools like Rice, Houston and UTEP. Would UTEP be a good fit for the Mountain West Conference? The Mountain West is a definite step up from the recently flat C-USA so this could be great for the Miners. Mountain West Conference could have as many as 4-5 teams in this years NCAA tournament and are quickly becoming a very competitive conference recruitment wise.

Wise Men, or Magi, were chosen by fate to visit the little town of Bethlehem to bring gifts to the new-born Christ Child, little did they figure that some day in the distant future, they would be competing for attention with La Rosca de Reyes, a delicious concoction in the Spanish-speaking world. But, first to the Three Wise Men. In the time of King Herod, King of Judea - after Jesus had been born - he had ordered the Three Wise Men to bring him news of the birth so that he too could pay homage. But, he had other plans. As the birth of Jesus had been prophesied, he would become the new King of the Jews, a title which already belonged to Herod. He would harbor no competition for his throne, which meant that his intention was to murder Jesus. The Three Wise Men continued on their travels to find Jesus, finding him in the little town of Bethlehem, led by the Rising Star. Traveling from afar, the three Magi were Melchior a Persian scholar; Baltazar, an Arabian scholar, and Caspar, an Indian scholar - who proffered their gifts to the baby Jesus, they knelt to him in honor and respect. Having heard of Herods intentions in a dream, they returned to the land of
it is obligated to provide another feast to take place on February 2. The knife which is used to cut the slices symbolizes the danger that faced the baby Jesus. As each guest opens up his or her slice, sighs of relief are heard that the figurine was not found. But, the joke is on everyone, because whoever found the figurine, it their births through a different route. Each was said to be a King in his own land. When Herod learned that the Wise Men were not to pass through his Kingdom again, he ordered the deaths of all the children in Bethlehem, in effect, to kill the new-born Jesus. The day was known as the Massacre of Innocents. However, his plan was thwarted because Jesus and his family had already fled to Egypt. The three gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh were said to mean different things to different people. Gold was the symbol of Kingship, myrrh was an anointing oil, while frankincense was a perfume of sorts. Jesus survived King Herod, of course, and, thus was born a Mexican tradition and in effect a tradition throughout the Spanish-speaking world that on January 6, children would be given their presents celebrating Christmas, rather than on the more traditional day of December 25. Known as El Dia de Los Reyes, January 6 became the day in which the three Magi found the baby Jesus. Just as in the traditional Christmas Day, children in Mexico and now in El Paso eagerly await the morning of January 6, when the Magi have left them their gifts. Children write letters to their favorite Wise Man asking for their favorite things. On the night of January 5, the figurines of the Three Wise Men are added to the Nativity Scene. Before going to bed, children place their old shoes under the bed or in the living room, where the Wise Men will leave their gifts so that the children will find them in the morning when they awaken. On that magic day, adults prepare a feast that will include the Rosca de Reyes which is an oval sweetbread loaded with candied fruit tamales, and hot chocolate. The Roscas come in all sizes some as small as to feed two people, and some large enough for 20 people. The feast, called La Merienda de Reyes originated in Spain and was brought to the New World with La Rosca taking center stage. Hidden inside each Rosca is a plastic figurine of the baby Jesus. As each guest opens his slice of bread, he looks for the figurine, giving a sigh of relief when it is not there. When the figurine is found, however, whoever finds
becomes a symbol of pride that they have been chosen to continue Christmas Day. On this day, known as El Dia de la Candelaria, the baby Jesus in the Nativity Scene is dressed in new clothes. Hispanics all over the world, including El Paso, also celebrate one more day, on Feb.
21, when the Nativity Scene is put away. Another family feast of tamales and hot chocolate then marks the end of the holiday season. With so many Mexicans relocating to El Paso, celebrations such as Los Tres Reyes Magos and, of course, La Rosca, will continue to grow and flourish.

Like love, furniture can be better the second time around. Rebuilt/reupholstered pieces are also a good investment.

By Rose Bennett Gilbert Q: We kinda ran out of funds after we bought our new-to-us house last fall, and we are having to ditch our grand plans for new furniture, too. The trouble is, we gave away most of our old stuff before we moved. Any ideas on how to fill in the blanks will be appreciated. A: Actually, you may have done yourselves a favor: our recycling-savvy century is rich with second-hand furniture that was made in the middle of the last
and made to last, much of it from native American woods. Prowl through resale shops and charity catch-alls, such as Good Will and the Salvation Army. Chances are good you'll find everything you need to furnish and furbish your house, from beds to chairs, tables, bookcases and storage pieces. The trick is to shop with foresight: don't focus on the furniture's current condition. Envision how it will look refinished, repainted, repaired and reupholstered to look and wear like new. Then when you do the math, you'll see how recycling
can be as kind to your budget as it is attractive to live with. But don't take just my word for it. In the clean, open and inviting room we show here, award-winning New York interior designer Drew McGurkin puts "used" furniture to great reuse. The sofa and two chairs, now orange, were already in the client's life when Drew and his team took on the renovation of her house in the Hamptons. Rebuilt and reupholstered, the "old" furniture is enjoying a smart second life in her second home. Continues on page 9
DR. WALLACE: My 18-year-old cousin has the eating disorder called bulimia. This means she eats a lot of food and then goes to the restroom and vomits it all up. Our entire family is really concerned about her health, especially her parents. I learned a lot about bulimia on the Internet, but I haven't yet found out why people become bulimic. If she just wanted to be slim, she would just workout and eat good foods. So why is my cousin bulimic? Nameless, Sidney, Ohio.
Let's play a game. I just saw it in the latest Bond thriller "Skyfall" M dies in 007's arms, don't tell so I know it's still in fashion. NAMELESS: Both males and females can fall victim to bulimia, but young women are primarily at risk. According to the booklet, "Bulimia, eating yourself sick," on the surface, bulimics appear to be healthy, happy and successful. They are achievers; they excel in school, sports and on their jobs, but are never satisfied because they think they are not good enough. They strive to attain perfection, but never quite make it. If she can't be perfect on her diet, she overeats and then vomits to get rid of the food and her shame. The desire to be perfect comes from a poor selfimage. Many bulimics don't see themselves as lovable, so they put a great deal of emphasis on their appearance. The roots of bulimia are often found in the family structure. Often bulimics want to please their parents to a degree that they become obsessed with gaining their approval. But bulimia is a treatable condition. Hope and help are available. Medical and mental health professionals use a variety of plans that work: group therapy, individual counseling, family therapy, behavior modification, anti-depressant medication and support groups. Many bulimics want to rid themselves of this addictive food obsession, but are embarrassed to seek help. You and your parents could pass this information along to your cousin's parents and encourage them to discuss the illness with their family doctor who can make helpful professional recommendations.

I have kept a price book for many years now, and it definitely helps me purchase with confidence. I like to use a small address book and a pencil. I list items under the corresponding letter tab (for example: Rice in the "R" section). I note the item and then leave room to note a few variations. I include the brand, package size, price, date and store. I use pencil so that I can update when prices or package sizes change. The tabbed letters of the address book make it quick to look things up on the fly. I also keep a small calculator in my purse so that I can easily calculate per ounce/piece/etc. to compare items. I've even had friends call me when they've seen a sale or special to find out if it really is a good deal. Kristine, Colorado

DR. WALLACE: I'm 13 and so is my best friend. Our problem is that we both like the same boy. We asked him which one of us he likes better, and he said he likes us both the same. She and I talked it over and decided that one of us would have to find another boy to like. First, we were going to flip a coin to see who would be his girlfriend, but then she suggested that whoever got the highest grade on our next spelling test would be the winner. Both of us studied really hard. She only missed one word and got an A. Because I was nervous, I missed two words and received an A-. Now that I think about it, she has always been the better speller, and I think she conned me into competing with her on the spelling test. Yesterday she told me she has let the boy know that she's now his girlfriend. But I don't want to look for another boy. I like this one. I also think he really likes me more than he likes her. I have a huge dilemma. What should I do? Nameless, Knoxville, Tenn. NAMELESS: You made an agreement with your friend, and now you must honor it. Don't interfere with her and the boy. Too many times, one party agrees to something and will later try to back out. Professional athletes are a good example. They sign a contract for millions of dollars and then decide midway through that they want to renegotiate for more money because some other player signed a better contract. You gave your word. Now keep it! Besides, boys are fickle! Don't be surprised if he decides he likes you a little more than he likes your friend.

Want your kid to eat more fruits and vegetable? Eat with them. A University of Leeds study found that children who see their parents eating healthy foods tend to eat them more. According to the study, 63 percent of children worldwide don't consume the World Health Organization's recommended amount of five portions (400g) of fruits and vegetables per day. The researchers said children who always ate a family meal together at a table consumed 125 grams (1.5 portions) more fruits and vegetables on average than children who never ate with their families. Even those who reported eating together only once or twice a week consumed 1.2 portions more than those who never ate together. "Even if it's just one family meal a week, when children eat together with parents or older siblings they learn about eating. Watching the way their parents or siblings eat and the different types of food they eat is pivotal in creating their own food habits and preferences," said study author Janet Cade, a professor at the University of Leeds School of Food Science and Nutrition.

ts often been said that the season-opening Daytona 500, NASCARs biggest race, sets the tone for the entire year.
First, there was the rain that came on race day and forced the only rainout of the history of the 500. But the news wasnt all bad, because that put NASCAR racing live on prime time TV for the first time ever. That switch led to the highest number of viewers ever to watch a FOX race broadcast. Then there was the fire, when Juan Pablo Montoya lost control of his car and slammed into a jet dryer, igniting a spectacular blaze and causing a two-hour delay while repairs were made to the track. Luckily for NASCAR, just as it looked like the TV audience might tune out because of the delay, Brad Keselowski whipped out his cell phone and began Tweeting about the incident. In addition to gaining about 100,000 Twitter followers, he gave NASCARs social media initiative a huge boost.

Later in the season, NASCAR decided cell phones in race cars were a bad idea and fined Keselowski $25,000 for Tweeting from his car during a red flag at Phoenix. Finally, at the end of the 500, there was Matt Kenseth winning his second Daytona 500. That victory, in addition to his solid performance throughout the season, made his mid-year announcement that he was leaving his Roush-Fenway Racing team for Joe Gibbs Racing even more startling. Hes taking over the No. 20 Toyota formerly driven by Joey Logano, who is moving to the No. 22 at Penske Racing as a teammate to Keselowski. Dale Earnhardt Jr.s strong runner-up run at Daytona was the start of a comeback season for NASCARs most popular driver. He broke a 143-race winless streak at Michigan in June and made the cut for the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Also grabbing headlines at Daytona were the rules infractions by Jimmie Johnsons No. 48 crew. NASCAR initially suspended crew chief Chad Knaus and car chief Ron Malec, docked the team 25 points and fined Knaus $100,000 for improper modifications to their car. The team appealed, and in a stunning move, NASCAR Chief Appellate Officer John Middlebrook overturned the most damaging parts of the penalties, leaving in place only the fine against Knaus. The drama that began at Daytona continued throughout the season. Both races at Bristol Motor Speedway produced interesting results. The Food City 500 in March, won by Keselowski, saw seas of empty seats in the grandstands, prompting track owner Bruton Smith to grind portions of the pavement in an attempt to bring back the old Bristol that often saw slam-bang racing because of the lack of multiple grooves. But when the night race in August got under way, the top of the track that had been ground in an attempt to keep drivers on the bottom, actually proved to be the preferred line. But fans were entertained as in the past, thanks in large part to Tony Stewart and Matt Kenseth. After the two crashed while racing for the lead, Stewart got out of his car and threw his helmet at Kenseths car, bouncing it off the front end.Continues on page 23

One thing I quickly learned (and liked) about the i was how accurate the range meter was. Other electric cars had the miles on the range meter ticking away long before the true distance was covered. Not so with the i. And turn off all the accessories and the i will respond by adding more miles to your range. But there is still no denying the fact that I was constantly monitoring the battery life and always wondering what I would do if I did run out of power. This concern is sometimes referred to as range anxiety a new phrase popular with electric car buyers and potential owners. Luckily, I never found myself with less than 10 miles left, and I made it a habit to always plug in when I got home. There are two trim levels for the i - the base ES and the higher-up SE. The ES looks plain with its steel wheels but does come equipped with full power accessories. My i was the SE model that gets nicer alloy wheels along with foglamps, nicer interior and a better audio system. Total price on my tester was $34,920 but that is before the $7,500 federal tax credit. The i ES starts at $29,125. Like other electric cars, the Mitsubishi i isnt for everybody. If your daily commute is less than 25 miles each way, it works out well; anything more than that may be reason to look at a hybrid. But with the i, just knowing that stopping at gas stations and even oil changes are things of the past is a great feeling. Throw in the fact that you are helping the environment and you can see that the i is a true green machine that delivers on its promises. Now about the way it looks
Global Warming and Smog impact. Replenishing the battery pack is similar to other electric cars just plug it into a 120V or 220V outlet (using a special charger, sold separately). A typical 120V outlet means it will take a long 22 hours to recharge a depleted battery whereas the 220V will do the job in seven hours.
Once the i is fully charged it can travel 62 miles, giving it the shortest range in the electric-car segment. And once the battery is depleted, you are out of luck. Not even triple-A can save you unless they have a super long extension cord. But being simple is what makes the i stand out. Its easily the smallest car in its class, but the front seats provide ample room for both the driver and passen-

crash that ended what would have been a storybook moment for team owner Rick Hendrick. Two of his drivers, Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson, were at the front of the pack and in position to claim the 200th Cup win for Hendrick at the track where he got his first Cup victory and where he lost family members and friends in a plane crash. Instead, they were collected in a crash that set the stage for a win by Ryan Newman. But Bowyer didnt get off scotfree. In the next-to-last race of the year, at Phoenix, Gordon paid him back by intentionally wrecking him. Then, in the final race of the year, the race for the win came down to none other than Gordon and Bowyer. Gordon won the race, the 87th victory of his Cup career. Bowyers second-place finish gave him a one-point edge over Jimmie Johnson in the race for the runner-up spot in the standings. A great start at Daytona and an equally thrilling ending at Homestead made for one memorable season and raise high hopes for the new NASCAR year.
