Climate Change and Poverty:

CER Revenues @ $13

In the Philippines, 1.7 million tons per year of carbon emissions can be captured by clean burn of methane from the manure of backyard pigs (USEPA 2010). However, the very low aggregation level of pigs (1 or 2) does not make the installation of anaerobic digesters feasible (SNV Netherlands, Winrock Foundation, 2009). Rural households use woody biomass from forests and mangroves for cooking fuels. The average household can use about 9 tons of wood per year.

It starts with practical sense and gets done with persistence

These same households are in the poverty trap. They earn about $1/day, cannot raise the pig level, Household and cannot afford clean fuels such as LPG. The destruction of mangroves and forests is proceeding at an alarming rate. Climate change has brought about increased rainfall and flooding. The Philippine Backyard Piggeries Biogas Corporation & Food from Thin Air, Inc. are implementing a programme of activities under the CDM / Kyoto protocol to: Produce 1.6 million CERs / year Save 900,000 tons of wood Capture 500,000 tons of carbon from manure Produce 100,000 livelihoods Increase income to $100/month. (Currently under validation by DNV-Norway.)

Funding the Program:

The program can be funded by a combination of carbon credit revenues (e.g. Carbon Emission Reduction Units or CERs under the UNFCCC CDM Program), climate change development funds such as REDD+, philanthropy, corporate responsibility, voluntary markets, and other sources. The chart above shows the distribution of revenues to various entities involved in implementing the project. To fully fund the project solely by carbon credit revenues, a unit price of $13 is needed. The carbon credit unit price goes down as funding from other sources are secured (e.g. grants for digesters, pigs or feeds). Additional funding, above the $13/CER will be deposited into individual bank accounts of participating households to provide for savings and improvements to the household.
