FINDING GOD
The splendid magi, all sparkle and dash and solemnity, march right up off the pages of Matthews Gospel and into our churches today. Matthew alone tells us this grand and seductive story so that we might see the light and know that the child these magi visited is the fulfillment of prophecy, the king of the world that stretches to the magis home country and beyond, right down the ages to us. We too see and understand anew. Like the magi, our patron saints for this day, we see in the newborn child the king of the universe and light of the world. Like the magi, we find in ourselves a new faith and a new life. Like them, we return to our home by a new route. We are asked to come away from this festive season ourselves renewed and awake to the presence of God among us. We are asked to find God where God is to be found, to be attentive and surprised and ready to bow down in adoration and to offer our gifts. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

The Council of Catholic Women Christ the King Parish Lombard, Illinois Whats happening... January 2013
Happy New Year! Another year has been gifted to us to do with it what we will. What kind of a year will it be? Many people start off the New Year by making a long list of Resolutions on the 1st day of the new year. Statistics tell us that 45% of Americans make Resolutions. Yet, sadly, 24% of them give up within two weeks. Making meaningful and achievable resolutions need not be a difficult task. The best advice we found is to think in terms of the days resolutions not the years. Following are a few suggestions that are sure make the New Year happier. > Learn more about your faith. When the Year of Faith began, we were asked to memorize the (newly re-worded) Nicene Creed. The Creed is a list of all that our Faith contains. Saying it slowly every day, focusing on each line is a good practice. > Get involved. Being connected brings along many benefits - such as developing new skills and making friends. An easy way to do that is to come to a CCW meeting, and help with one of our projects. We would be very happy to have the help! > Practice Gratitude. Keep a Gratitude Journal, writing down three things for which you are most grateful each day. Write thank you notes to people who have been helpful to you. January 19 and 20 are the days scheduled for the Baby Bottles for Life collection to help continue the work of Womans Choice Services. Take a minute and pick up a baby bottle after Mass, fill it with loose change or a check - and bring it back to church by February 2nd or 3rd. Look for boxes labeled Baby Bottles for Life in the Narthex and drop it in. It is an easy way to be Pro-Life. Thank you for your help! January 21 Join us for the monthly CCW Community Mass at 8:30 A.M. Our prayer this month is for an end to the culture of violence in our country as we are called to work for peace in our homes, our streets and in our world. Prayer request: Please pray for families and friends of those who died in the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut on December 14th. Pray also for all of those who continue to suffer from natural disasters here in this country and around the world. January 21 Come for Chili! Start off the New Year by joining us for supper. On the menu: Chili with all the fixings and a selection of yummy sweets. After supper there will be a showing of the movie: October Baby. The film is about a teenaged girl who finds that she lived through a lateterm abortion. Come and bring a friend. The Monday meeting will be held in the Parish Life Center and begin at 6:30 p.m. It is a good way to celebrate the Right to Life Month.

The Beacon Hill family wishes to express its gratitude for the ministry of Elmer Mears to our community. For 15 years Elmer and his wife, Eileen, anchored our Sunday morning Communion Service, which is so appreciated by the residents who are unable to attend church. A few weeks ago Elmer died. We will especially miss joining him in singing God Bless America, which was always his closing prayer.

Epiphany: To Find Our Meaning in Christ

On January 6, 2013 we celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord. Epiphany! What a wonderful word. Even its secular definition is thrilling: a sudden realization about the nature or meaning of something. It brings all sorts of images to mind: a light bulb suddenly turning on, shedding brilliant illumination; a revelation that brings a gasp; an idea so vivid we pause and give thanks; a truth so powerful we fall to our knees. The feast of the Epiphany is all of those things and more. We celebrate the mysterious appearance at Jesus birthplace of three men from the East. They had set off on a most quixotic journey, seeking what they would find at the end of a stars dazzling rays. What, we wonder, did they make of the epiphany with which their journey ended? Did they spend the rest of their lives trying to discern what their discovery of the baby meant, or did the Christ Child gift them with a sudden realization of His nature? What more could they or we want of a lifes journey, than to find, in our epiphany, the Christ waiting for us? The twelve days of Christmas have led us to this place, where Gentiles from afar have discovered Christ, thereby revealing that He came for everyone, for each one of us throughout history, and not just for the Jewish people to whom he was born. The feast of Epiphany brings us to the last week of our liturgical celebration of Christmas. But for the Christian steward, Epiphany is not an end but a beginning. This feast reminds us that the New Year beckons us to openness about the epiphanies to which God leads us if we but keep an open, prayerful heart, a heart full of deep, awed gratitude. Let us pray never to become too jaded, too full of certainty, too wrapped up in the routine of life to be asleep at the time of epiphany. If we could resolve to keep only one New Years Resolution, let it be this: to pay attention to the epiphanies God places before us.

Life: An Epiphany of God

Life is always a good. Why is life a good? This question is found everywhere in the Bible, and from the very first pages it receives a powerful and amazing answer. The life which God gives man is quite different from the life of all other living creatures, inasmuch as man, although formed from the dust of the earth (cf. Gen 2:7, 3:19; Job 34:15; Ps 103:14; 104:29), is a manifestation of God in the world, a sign of his presence, a trace of his glory (cf. Gen 1:26-27; Ps 8:6). This is what Saint Irenaeus of Lyons wanted to emphasize in his celebrated definition: Man, living man, is the glory of God. Man has been given a sublime dignity, based on the intimate bond which unites him to his Creator: in man there shines forth a reflection of God himself (The Gospel of Life, n. 34). Is 60:1-6 Eph 3:2-3a, 5-6 Mt 2:1-12 The opening and closing prayer, the Preface, and the readings of todays feast all work powerfully together to enable us to communicate the message of the sanctity of life. Epiphany is about revelation and manifestation, and that, of course is what Christ does. Not only does he reveal the Father to us, but he reveals us to ourselves. He shows us that this human nature of ours, that can be so troublesome and burdened, has in fact been renewed. The Preface proclaims, You have renewed humanity in his immortal image. That, indeed is the promise in Christ Jesus through the Gospel that Paul proclaims to the Ephesians in the second reading. As the alternative opening prayer says, it is a promise that God will draw us to the life where your Spirit makes all life complete. Death is no longer the final word for the human family, and this gift is shared not only by one nation or one people, but by all humanity. The universal offer of Gods salvation extends to those still in the womb. Epiphany not only tells us that there are no national or ethnic boundaries to Gods call, but that there are no artificial boundaries between born and unborn, wanted or unwanted, convenient or inconvenient. Moreover, the epiphany most needed in our time is the ability to see beyond the appearances of those who are smaller and weaker, and beyond the illusion created when some are declared non-persons under the law. Breaking through all this darkness and blurriness is the clear light of Christ, which shines on every human life without exception, bringing those lives Gods love and giving us the sacred obligation to love them as well. STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE Leaving a Legacy

A young man was surprised to find his sick and elderly grandfather planting a small peach tree in his backyard. When the young man asked his grandfather why he was planting the tree, the old man replied, Son, all my life I have eaten the fruit from trees that other people have planted. I figure I have an obligation to make sure there is some fruit around for others to enjoy.

A Stewardship Prayer for the New Year

Good and gracious God, A new year of grace is upon us, giving us impressions of crisp beginnings new goals, a fresh sense of hope. Though we cling to our own expectations for the year ahead, we know you alone are the sovereign of our future, Lord of our lives, and the source of whatever good we may do. We thank you, O Lord, for the gift of the days and weeks you have entrusted to us. Teach us to be good stewards of our time ahead, that we go about our days keeping you at the center of our lives. In the midst of our daily pursuits and activities, focus our eyes on the needs of others; help us respond with compassion to the poor; and open our hearts to a suffering world. We ask for a year of peace, a year that brings an end to hatred and strife, and a year where we find a deeper joy that can only be found in you. We ask this through Christ your Son who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen.

Four Ways to Leave a Legacy

Did you know there are four easy ways for you to remember you parish in your will? 1. specific Bequest you can designate a certain amount of cash or specific assets to the parish. 2. Residual Bequest you can plan for the parish to receive all or a portion of your estate after other specific bequests have been distributed. 3. Percentage Bequest You can designate a certain percentage of the estate to go to the parish. 4. Contingent Bequest You can make the parish the recipient of a bequest if others named in your will are not living at the time of your death. No matter how you decide to remember your parish, a gift from your will accomplishes several key benefits. It sends a strong message to your heirs that the Church played an important role in your life. It guarantees that your generosity to the Church will be continued even after you are gone. It provides important assistance to our parish. It may even provide tax benefits to your heirs. Talk to your lawyer or financial counselor today about the best way for you to remember your parish in your will.

A Stewardship Moment
Today we hear Saint Paul proclaim that he exercises stewardship of Gods grace for the benefit of the Christian community. Earlier in this letter to the Ephesians, he prayed they would come to realize the actual value of these riches of Gods grace they inherited. This letter was written to remind, encourage, and spiritually motivate this Eucharistic community to appreciate just how immeasurably wealthy they had become to inherit a life in Christ. What value do we place on our life in Christ? If someone asked us to put a price on this life in todays currency, how would we respond? $100 million? $100 billion? Priceless? Do we live as though our life in Christ is priceless?

Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.
