DISCUSSION

October 24, 2012

In our experiment, straight through cables were used to connect from a host network interface controller (a computer or similar device) to a hub. But if we want to connect two PCs directly through Ethernet ports, so we should be used cross over cable which a cable with connections that "cross over" was used to connect two devices of the same type. Example two hosts or two switches to each other. The subnet mask had been configured to 255.255.255.0 due to 255.255.255.0 is the most common subnet mask used on computers connected to Internet Protocol (IP) networks. An incorrectly configured subnet mask (also called net mask) causes some types of network connection failures. The subnet mask 255.255.255.0 is also written as a 32-bit binary number written as 11111111 11111111 11111111 00000000 that subnet is a logical grouping of connected network devices. Nodes on a subnet tend to be located in close physical proximity to each other on a LAN. We looked at the ICMP address mask request and reply and the timestamp request and reply in detail. These are typical of the request-reply messages. Both have an identifier and sequence number in the ICMP message. The sending application stores a unique value in the identifier field, to distinguish between replies for itself and replies for other processes. The sequence number field lets the client match replies with requests. We also saw the ICMP port unreachable error, a common ICMP error. This let us examine the information returned in an ICMP error: the IP header and the next 8 bytes of the IP datagram that caused the error. This information is required by the receiver of the ICMP error, to know more about the cause of the error. Both TCP and UDP store the source and destination port numbers in the first 8 bytes of their headers for this reason. If a machine talks to another machine in the same network, it requires its physical or MAC address. But, since the application has given the destination's IP address it requires some mechanism to bind the IP address with its MAC address. This is done through Address Resolution protocol (ARP).

CONCLUSION

October 24, 2012

At the end of this simulation of the computer network laboratory, we must be learnt to use the packet tracer software before we start to simulate it. In the lab, we able to develop as understanding of the basic functions of the packet tracer. Besides that, we capable to model a simple network and observed the traffic behavior of the massage sending on the computer network. So we can create a simple Ethernet network. After that we can observe the data flow of ARP broadcast and ping (ICMP packets) At the end of this conclusion, we would like to thank to our lab instructor Mr. Azrizal to instruct us to complete the Laboratory researching.
