This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards AustraIia/Standards New ZeaIand
Committee EL-010, Overhead Lines, to supersede AS 1154.12004, %6<>4*=7;! *6-!
,76->,=7;!/2==260<!/7;!7?.;1.*-!87@.;"!Part 1:!'.;/7;5*6,."!5*=.;2*4"!0.6.;*4!;.9>2;.5.6=<!
*6-!-25.6<276<. After consuItation with stakehoIders in both countries, Standards AustraIia
and Standards New ZeaIand decided to deveIop this Standard as an AustraIian rather than
an AustraIian/New ZeaIand Standard.
The objective of this Standard is to provide users and manufacturers of fittings with
definitions of terms, performance requirements, dimensions, test methods and acceptance
criteria.
This Standard is one of a two-part series covering insuIator and conductor fittings for
overhead power Iines, as foIIows:
Part 1: Performance, materiaI, generaI requirements and dimensions (this Standard, which
combines the former Part 1 and Part 2).
Part 3: Performance and generaI requirements for heIicaI fittings.
In this revision reference is made to 120 kN rated fittings. These fittings empIoy M16
fasteners with 16 mm baII/socket coupIings and, whiIst maintaining the same dimensions,
are essentiaIIy higher strength versions of the 70 kN fittings. These are NOT intended to be
repIacements for the previous rating of 125 kN that empIoyed M18 fasteners with 20 mm
coupIingsthese are mechanicaIIy simiIar but dimensionaIIy quite different. If, for the
purpose of maintenance, purchasers have need for 20 mm/125 kN fittings in their existing
network, this is to be made cIear to suppIiers to avoid any confusion or incompatibiIity.
Provision has been made by many to suppIy 106 kN fittings with high strength M18 boIts
for these situations.
In the preparation of this Standard, consideration was given to IEC 61284:1997, &?.;1.*-!
426.<B(.9>2;.5.6=<! *6-! =.<=<! /7;! /2==260<, and IEC 61897:1998, &?.;1.*-! 426.<B

which have been incorporated in this Standard.
The foIIowing part of this Standard is technicaIIy identicaI to IEC 61284:1997:
Section 5, )><8.6<276! *6-! <>887;=! /2==260< is technicaIIy identicaI to CIauses 11.211.4 of
IEC 61284:1997.
The foIIowing parts of this Standard are technicaIIy identicaI to IEC 61897:1998:
(a) CIause 7.2.2.3, $2.4-! =.<=, is technicaIIy identicaI to CIause 7.11.3.3 of
IEC 61897:1998.
(b) CIause 7.2.2.4, #6*4A=2,*4! 5.=17-, is technicaIIy identicaI to CIause 7.11.3.4 of
IEC 61897:1998.
Statements expressed in mandatory terms in notes to tabIes and figures are deemed to be
requirements of this Standard.
The term normative` has been used in this Standard to define the appIication of the
appendix to which it appIies. A normative` appendix is an integraI part of a Standard.

MechanicaI impedance is a convenient method of measuring the dynamic characteristics of
a vibration damper. The tests described in Section 7 require transIationaI impedance testing

4*!!!E6DE!>6E9@5!
Both the force needed to drive the damper cIamp at a constant ampIitude and the phase
angIe between the appIied force and the resuIting cIamp dispIacement shaII be measured

Curves of impedance versus frequency provide a quaIitative assessment of damper
response. They provide a convenient means of batch testing to ensure an acceptabIe IeveI of
quaIity assurance.
At higher ampIitudes of cIamp osciIIation, the damper response wiII show a downward
frequency shift due to the nonIinear behaviour of the damper.

This Appendix outIines test methods to be used in determining the radio interference
voItage (RIV) and corona performance of fittings. It does not address permissibIe RI Iimits,
nor specified corona extinction voItages or corona extinction voItage gradients that are set
by reguIations or utiIity practice. Corona and RIV tests are type tests.
5*!!!56D4C;AE;@?!@7!E6DE!>6E9@5D!
The test is carried out to determine RIV IeveIs and/or the extinction vaIues of corona.
(Corona may be positive or negative, as specified by the purchaser.) If the purchaser
specifies that the RIV IeveI needs to be determined, the test shaII be carried out in
accordance with AS/NZS CISPR 16.1 and CISPR 18-2. The RIV IeveI is cIoseIy correIated
to positive corona (see Figure D1).

FlGURE D1 TYPlCAL RELATlONSHlP BETWEEN
OBSERVED CORONA AND RlV
AIternative test methods are as foIIows:
(a) 8KHP>DB! IBPEKA!!!This specifies a fixed test voItage, 8, at which there shaII be no
corona, and simuIates service conditions by detaiIing the proximity of earth pIanes.
(b) 8KHP>DB!DN>AFBJP!IBPEKA!!!This specifies a fixed voItage gradient at the surface of the
test conductor, at which there shaII be no corona, and simuIates service conditions by
using suitabIe earth pIanes. The test voItage required to produce this gradient depends
on the proximity of the earth pIanes and shaII not deviate from the maximum
operating phase to earth voItage by more than &30 .
In addition to the corona observation, the RIV performance of the fittings can be
determined using either test set-up.

The assembIy with the fittings under test shaII represent as cIoseIy as possibIe the service
conditions.
The test shaII be carried out with a reIative humidity of between 20 and 80.
The geometricaI configuration as weII as the maximum operating voItage of the overhead
Iine for which the test fitting is intended shaII be known. In this test, a singIe phase is
used to produce specified voItage or voItage gradients reIated to those that occur on the
conductors of the three-phase transmission Iine.
The fitting shaII be attached to a Iength of conductor or subconductor of the size and type
with which the fitting is to be used. Smooth metaI rods or tubes with the same overaII
diameter as the conductor may be used to simuIate the conductors.
The test conductor shaII be positioned paraIIeI to a conducting reference earth pIane and
terminated with corona-free spheres or rings.
The earth pIane may be represented by a suitabIe ceiIing, waII or fIoor, or by a structure
buiIt specificaIIy for the purpose.
The conductor and suggested pIane structure shaII be so positioned that the conductor is
approximateIy centred with respect to the pIane. Earthed objects not forming part of the test
arrangement shaII not be cIoser to any point on the test conductor than 1.4 times the
distance between conductor and reference earth.
The test assembIy may be supported or positioned by suitabIe non-conducting, noise-free
rods, ropes or chains. The connection to the test suppIy shaII be made from one end of the
conductor. The test suppIy and connection shaII be positioned so as not to affect the
gradient at the test object.
