WBC
White blood cells (WBCs), or leukocytes, are a part of the immune system and help our bodies fight infection. They circulate in the blood so that they can be transported to an area where an infection has developed.

Decrease in anemia, hemorrhage, and hemolytic reaction; increased in dehydration, heart and lung disease

DECREASE
measures the percentage of the volume of whole blood that is made up of red blood cells. This measurement depends on the number of red blood cells and the size of red blood cells.
DIFFERINTIAL COUNT
Segmenters
Segmenters (often just segs) are one of the types of neutrophils found in the blood. They would be elevated if the overall white count is up, usually due to some kind of infection.

Bands are immature neutrophils that are released into the blood when the body needs more infection control than mature neutrophils can

DECREASE
Increased in bacterial infections; low numbers leave person very susceptible to infection
Lymphocytes
Lymphocytes are responsible for immune responses. There are two main types of lymphocytes: B cells and T cells. The B cells make antibodies that attack bacteria and toxins while the T cells attack body cells themselves when they have been taken over by viruses or have become cancerous.

Monocytes
Monocytes share the "vacuum cleaner" (phagocytosis) function of neutrophils, but are much longer lived as they have an additional role: they present pieces of pathogens to T cells

so that the pathogens may be recognized again and killed, or so that an antibody response may be mounted.
Platelet
Platelets or thrombocytes are natural sources of growth factors. They circulate in the blood and are involved in hemostasis, leading to the formation of blood clots.

Eosinophils
Eosinophils primarily deal with parasitic infections. Eosinophils are also the predominant inflammatory cells in allergic reactions.
