Summer Camps
Hillsborough County Public Schools will host various summer programs for elementary school students from June 23 to July 25, 2008. The summer camp program for students in kindergarten through third grade has been planned to provide instruction for those students who are reading below grade level. The purpose of the camp is to increase the reading achievement of K-3 students and to prevent the loss of instructional momentum that typically occurs when students do not have access to literacy activities during the twomonth summer break from school. The K-3 summer reading camp will be offered at 55 elementary school sites. Transportation will be provided. In addition, the school district will be offering K-5 Summer Plus camps. These programs will be offered at 25 sites. The programs have been designed to provide an opportunity for additional learning time for any student who regularly attends these sites. For more information and a listing of schools, log on to www.sdhc.k12.fl.us. Hillsborough County Public Schools also will host the Voluntary Prekindergarten Program at 21 sites throughout the district from June 23 through August 4. These sites will offer a free, quality instructional program for children entering kindergarten in the fall. The program will focus on school readiness and emergent literacy skills. Children must be 5 years old by September 1, 2008, and live in the state of Florida to qualify. For further information, call 813-272-4840. Public School Locations: Bryan, Buckhorn, Chiles, Clair Mel, Clark, Dover, Essrig, Gibsonton, Gorrie, Mango, McDonald, Mintz, Potter, Seffner, Seminole, Sessums, Shaw, Sheehy, Tinker, Wimauma, Woodbridge

Newspaper in Education
The St. Petersburg Times is one of nearly 1,000 U.S. newspapers offering a living text-book, the daily newspaper, to teachers and students. In addition to making newspapers available free, in print and online, to classrooms, an important focus of our Newspaper in Education program is providing educational materials, teaching guides and workshops. Our complementary teaching materials on all subjects base their instruction on using the newspaper and are aligned with the Sunshine State Standards. For information about how to receive free classroom sets of the St. Petersburg Times and accompanying teaching materials for your school; teacher and family workshops on how to use the newspaper as a learning tool; or about becoming a Newspaper in Education sponsor, please call 727-893-8138 or 800-333-7505, ext. 8138. First stop ... Florida

The United States is part of North America. Your travels in North America can begin right here in Florida with the book Hoot by Carl Hiaasen. Roy Eberhardt is the main character of this story. He is the new kid in town, and comes across burrowing owls living in the lot on the corner of East Oriole Avenue. The owls will be killed if Roy does not help them because their ecosystem is about to be destroyed. An ecosystem is a living community of plants and animals that need each other to exist. All animals, including humans, need water, oxygen and food to exist. What do you need to exist? Look through the St. Petersburg Times to find examples of things that you and your family need to exist in your community. Cut out pictures, cartoons, advertisements and articles that are part of your ecosystem. Create a collage with the items you have cut out from the Times. On the back of the collage, write a well-developed paragraph explaining some of the items you have selected and their role in your ecosystem. Share your project with your class and family.

Creating a travel brochure

You are going to create a travel section for wandering the world. As a travel writer for the St. Petersburg Times, you have been tasked with helping to create this special section for a luxury tour to visit some of the places represented in your reading. Use the travel articles, which run on Sundays in the Latitudes section of the Times, as models for your article. You also can read travel articles online in the archive at tampabay.com. Be sure to highlight the trendy spots, all exciting activities and the imports and exports of the areas. For insurance considerations, point out all possible dangers or special precautions that tourists might encounter in their visit. Once your article is created, share it with your friends or family. Create a comparison chart showing differences and similarities of the places you have visited. Once the articles and charts are complete, put them together to create a special travel section.

Learning with the Times Ripped from the headlines

As a journalist for your school newspaper, you are assigned the job of writing a newspaper article about one of the summer reading books. A good journalist must begin with six key questions: who, what, where, when, why and how? Before you plan your character interview, find an article in the St. Petersburg Times and answer each of those six questions. Now that you see the pattern for a newspaper article, write a newspaper article about your favorite book.

Congratulations! You are a well-read world traveler!

Look it up
When you study new things and read new books, you can come up against some tough vocabulary words! Most vocabulary words are learned from context clues or good old-fashioned dictionary work. While you read the summer reading books and this Newspaper in Education publication, be sure to highlight or circle words you dont know. Try to figure out their meanings by looking for clues in the sentences around these unknown words. Write down your best guess, and then look the words up in a dictionary. With your friends or family, make a list of the words others identified and see which ones stumped the group. Use the e-edition of the St. Petersburg Times to search for articles using these words. Make a chart showing how often these words were used in todays Times.

Celebrating Diversity
A Pride of African Tales by Donna L. Washington takes you on a journey to the continent of Africa. Each tale reflects a different culture and lesson to be learned. It is not just the stories in the book that will catch your attention. Award-winning artist James Ransomes watercolor paintings show the diversity of the African people through clothing, architecture, landscape and wildlife. What is diversity? Look up the word diversity in the dictionary. There is a lot of diversity in Hillsborough County. Do your neighborhood and school have a lot of diversity? How does this diversity make life and learning more interesting? Discuss these ideas with your friends and family. Look in the St. Petersburg Times for photos, cartoons, pictures or words that show diversity. Choose one of these pictures or words and write a story in the style of Donna L. Washington.
