On 18 July 1991, the Aboriginal Cultural Material Committee concluded that no exploration activity should occur at Walmadany.
On 21 November 2012, the ACMC is considering an appplication by Woodside Petroleum to drill into this registered heritage site.
THE BACKSTORY
IN 2008 PREMIER BARNETT CHOSE JAMES PRICE POINT AS THE PRECINCT FOR THE WORLDS LARGEST GAS PROCESSING PLANT. THE PREMIER DESCRIBED THIS AS AN INSIGNIFICANT PLACE.
1962 The Australian Academy of Science and the National Parks Board of WA
recommended this area on the Dampier Peninsula as a 300,000 acre Class A National Park. 1
Affairs. The Walmadany Heritage Site (ID 13076) is part of the Lurujarri Heritage Trail, which in turn is part of a 500km-long living songcycle on the Kimberley coast. 2 3
1991 The Aboriginal Cultural Material Committee (ACMC) presented their conclusions
at the Broome Wardens Court regarding an application to explore for mining at Walmadany. The ACMC concluded that no exploration activity should occur in the areas defined as the songcycle path. 5
WOODSIDE HAS APPLIED TO DRILL INTO THE WALMADANY HERITAGE SITE AT JAMES PRICE POINT AS PART OF THEIR EXPLORATORY WORKS FOR AN ON-SHORE LNG GAS PROCESSING SITE. THE ACMC MEETS ON 21 NOV 2012 TO CONSIDER THE APPLICATION BY WOODSIDE.
Environmental Protection Authority that the original AAS recommendation be implemented and that this area be named the Dampierland National Park. 6
1992 The Minister for the Environment upheld the 1991 EPA recommendations for no
mining in this area. 7
1996 The WA State Government purchased Waterbank Station with the express purpose 2000 The Waterbank Structure Plan was endorsed by the WA State Cabinet and adopted
by the Broome Shire as a Regional Plan; the Plan designated the area of Walmadany as part of a 93,000 hectare Reserve for Conservation and Aboriginal Heritage. 10
2002 The Kimberley Land Council and Traditional Owners proposed an Indigenous
Protected Area in order to protect and manage this area.11
