Gravity Die Casting

Gravity Die casting involves a process of pouring liquid metal into metallic moulds sans application of any exterior pressure. The liquid mental is poured into the cavity by gravity. Gravity die casting is very different from High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC). In HPDC casting the liquid metal is poured into the metal mould under tremendous pressure for production of thin walled smaller castings with improved dimensional precision and surface finish. Gravity die casting is basically a manufacturing process for manufacturing accurately dimensioned, well defined, level surface metal parts. It is achieved by pouring molten metal into reusable metal dies under the force of gravity. Benefits of Gravity Die Casting The main advantage of gravity die casting is its speedy production. The reusable die tooling helps produce hundreds of castings in a day. Interestingly, high definition parts cuts down the machining costs and better surface finish brings down the finishing costs. Although die-castings are cheaper than sand castings, die tooling is more expensive vis-avis sand tooling so the focus should be on maximizing the number of castings so as to make it cost effective in the long run. The process is suitable for mass production with superior reproduction; dimensional precision and surface finish than conventional sand castings. Castings can be done from few grams to 100 kgs of Aluminum Alloy. Also, there are reports of some foundries manufacturing cylinder blocks of 300 Kgs by Gravity Die Casting. However, as the constituent size and difficulty increases the process becomes even more expensive. It also causes difficulty in handling the die and extracting the casting from the die with decline in the dimensional accuracy and soundness of the casting. Gravity Die casting process is good for achieving 20% higher mechanical properties than sand casting. In fact the process can be automated which will help produce semi-gravity die-castings utilizing sand or plaster of paris for production of interior details.
