Big mouth with substance. The new Multi Treater.

Revolutionary new construction.

The Ipsen Multi Treater proves that its what's inside that counts: the all-new design increases the maximum load sizes for retort furnaces and cuts costs. Achieved by ensuring a much longer service life of the retort.

The construction of most conventional retort furnaces means that you quickly hit a limit when it comes to increasing batch weight. The larger the batch, the greater the load on the retort. At the same time, the strength of the furnace walls decreases the higher the furnace temperature. If you want to increase the furnace load, you have to make the furnace walls much thicker. This has two consequences, both of which have an unfavourable impact on design and cost. First, more material means higher production costs and a higher purchase price. Second, more material means higher energy consumption and higher operating costs, resulting in lower efficiency. In other words, the basic design of todays retort furnaces cannot be used if you want to build a furnace that will take larger loads. Ipsen has developed a revolutionary new design. Avoiding this problem and uncoupling the retort from the load weight. In the new Ipsen Multi Treater the batch hearth is not attached to the retort, but is suspended from additional crossbeams inside the furnace. The hearth support is attached to four tubes which are welded to the retort and lead out of the furnace. These tubes are linked to crossbeams by means of four gas tight flexible connectors forming completely gas tight units. This design takes the load off the retort, freeing it up to perform one key task: to seal the chamber for gas tight performance. And theres another thing that the new design doubles: thanks to the new patented construction, wear and tear on the retort material is much lower, leading to significantly longer service life at least 100 % longer! This new design has enabled us to double the maximum batch weight while retaining the original furnace size. A conventional size 17 (910 mm x 1,220 mm x 910 mm) furnace can typically treat batch weights of between 1,500 and 2,000 kg at 600 C and between 1,000 and 1,200 kg at 750 C. Operating at 600 C the new Ipsen Multi Treater more than doubles this, taking batches of up to 5,000 kg and up to 3,000 kg at 750 C.
The batch hearth: takes up to 5 tons thanks to the innovative mounting system.

Higher performance
Doubling of the permissible batch weight by suspending the hearth from the housing structure.

Faster
30 percent greater cooling performance due to newly designed pivoting flaps on the heat exchanger.

Energy savings
Reduced energy consumption due to improved insulation.

Long lasting
Up to 100 percent longer life due to new design principle.

Benefit from this innovation: Uniformity. Versatility. Speed.

We have made many improvements to ensure that the Ipsen Multi Treater produces perfect results in a wide range of processes and with exceptionally low energy consumption.

The goal of any heat treatment process is to give the workpiece a specific set of product characteristics. But you also want to ensure that these new characteristics are 100 % reproducible and are completely identical for all workpieces in a batch. The target: uniformity. The solution: optimum flow within the retort. Ipsen has taken a new direction with uniformity so that the gas circulation within the retort can be optimized through increased efficiency and improved directional flow. A perfect flow penetration into the load space coupled with an excellent heat transfer makes an excellent temperature uniformity of e.g. 3 K in the holding phase possible. It also reduces the temperature differences during the heating phase. During cooling, the cold quench gas is intensively mixed with the hot gases throughout the load chamber to achieve uniform cooling. The result: an excellent gas flow through the load and a correspondingly gut heat transfer to the gas. Which brings us to versatility: this is largely determined by quench intensity. The quench speed depends on the flow speed achieved by the external cooling units. Ipsen has literally cleared the way for vast improvements: with new shut-off flaps on the cold and the hot side of the cooling stream. Conventional solutions use common values; the drawback with these is that even when fully open, they still cover part of the flow area. Ipsen has designed completely new pivoting flaps

for the Multi Treater which do not block any of the flow when open. This simple, yet highly effective detail gives the Multi Treater greatly enhanced quench efficiency. Another important effect: cycle times have been reduced by up to 30 %. This means that the Multi Treater can help you save up to 500,000 per year. We have done the math for you take a look on the following page. Apart from all these innovative features, the Multi Treater gives you all the benefits of Ipsens proven technology. As with the predecessor model, the Ipsen VDR horizontal vacuum furnace, the Multi Treater can be used for the following applications: tempering, bright annealing, nitriding, long-cycle nitriding, nitrocarburising with preoxidation and post-oxidation (ProNox). Its unmatched flexibility, particularly in heat treatment of tool steel, makes the Multi Treater the ideal retort furnace for commercial heat treaters.

A very simple calculation: more speed equals greater profit.

The start of the internet era showed that the race was to the swift, and not to the biggest. This could also be the motto of the Multi Treater. Here are the figures to back it up.

The Multi Treater shortens cycle times by 30 %. As we mentioned before, this can increase your profits by up to 500,000 per furnace and year.

Additionally, there are the economic benefits that a Multi Treater provides on account of its longer retort service life and lower energy consumption, such as a lighter retort and highly effective insulation.

And while we are on the subject of money: repairs can be expensive, particularly if you need to dismantle and remove the retort. This is usually

necessary because you need access to the electric heating elements which are commonly used in conventional retort furnaces. In the Multi Treater Ipsen has incorporated unique heating elements which can be removed and replaced quickly, easily and inexpensively.

Furnace time approx. 8 hours Furnace time approx. 12 hours

saving 4 hours

Heres an example: To produce a 10 to 15 thick white layer on steel 16 MnCr5, conventional furnaces need 12 hours of treatment. If you reduce the cycle time to eight hours, you can treat three instead of just two batches per day. With a net batch weight of 2,000 kg and a retail price of 1.20 per kilogram, you can increase your turnover by 2,400 every day. With 300 working days in the year, this adds up to additional revenue of approx. 720,000. Investment, ancillary wage costs and all other costs, apart from energy, remain the same, so you are looking at an increase in profits of at least 500,000 per Multi Treater.
