COMMENTS
Hi there again! I hope our new forma t doesn't cause too much eye strain with th e smaller print . At this time I'd like to tak e a minute to clue you in on a few points o f interest . In case you haven't noticed this i s our second issue and I'll be working o n getting Issue #3 out shortly after The Ne w Year . I would like to make Suburban Relaps e a regular occurance, coming out roughly ever y two months . I can't do this all myself so I'll nee d your help . I need stories, interviews, features , photos, cartoons, artwork . . . you name it . I want this zine to be representative of South Florida . We have some great writers and artists, so pleas e get in touch with me and lets do it ! Now's the time for action, my friends . If we can get ourselves organized maybe we ca n make a few changes here . Frankly I'm tired o f national bands overlooking this area and I'm sic k of the crap that gets played on the radio . It' s not easy as such commited bands like The Eat, Th e Throbs, The Essentials, etc . . . will tell you . We got to give it our best shot though and b e positive about who and what we are . I'm sick o f people complaining and not doing anything . Maybe this zine in it's own insignificent wa y will help bring about some of those changes . I may sound naive but if you thick about i t things have to get better, they certainl y can't get any worse . Can they ? In short, if you got material you' d like to see nublishe-', send it in!!! If some thing in?!- es or outrages you, put it o n paper and let us know about it . As silly as i t may sound, I would like to think of thi s fanzine as a ca-imunity effort . Also if you' d like 'o take an ad, I'd be glad to furnish a n ad rate card on request . Our ad rates are CHEAP!!!''

1981 Suburban Relapse

This issue is dedicated to rE.dio station WSHE , for helping make this paper a reality . Afte r all, if the music was on the airwaves in th e first place would there be a need fo r p ublications like this?

'1 0 D.OS : 707 71ii TOS : LESLIE Someone described The Swimming Pool Q's as"far m music for punk people" (thank Craig!) . I don't kno w whether I'd go that far but I must admit some fondnes s for the Southern " ethnic " humor of the Q's . I did spend four years at a hareore Southern college in Nort h Florida, after all . They sing abort such woridy topic s as big fat tr-rtors, black bugs, and stock car races . Dumb but amusing stuff . Musically they cover a variety of styles ; pop, funk, psychedelicia, and rockabilly . What I foun d most refreshing about their gig at The New Wave Loung e was that they really did seem to be enjoying themselves , as corney as it may sound . A totally honest approach . No phony eosin,-! This was quite a relief after seein g The Go Gos a few weeks earlier (gee whiz, aren't w e cute?) . I could go on and make some ridiculou s comparasions to some other bands but I'll save tha t for the record reviews instead . I'll just call the m "entertaining" and leave it at that .

The Embryo of a Ma n
THE CHARLIE PICKETT INTERVIEW STORY : FISH PHOTOS : JIM JOHNSO N = ,_iTORS NOTE . .For the uninformed, Charlie Pickett is a local legend, a n outstanding guitarist, and plays tough passtionate classic R 'n' tR . Period. . His band, the Eggs have gone through more personal changes in 2 years tha n let's say Fleetwood Mac have in 15 . This weeks lineup consits of John Sal ton, guitar : Eddie O'Brien, bass (on loan from the Eat) ; and John Galway , drums . Two singles are avaivable on Open Records (Feeling / " White Light 'whit e Heat " and "If this is Love"/"Slow Death" .) For information contact Open Records, 901 Progresso Drive, Ft . Lauderdale, Fla .33304 FISH : We all know that the Pickett legend began in Dania, Fla . Lets star t at the beginning ; what was your first car ? C .P ; I got my first car when I was 16 . It was a 65' Volkswagon ; but afte r 2 months I lucked into a 65' Mustang . Much better for picking up girls . Before that I walked to the Dairy Queen for my dates . FISH :You've lived in South Florida for a long time ; isn't there an earl y Miami music scene ? C .P : When I was growing up there were a lot of dances at the high school s and teen centers . This was in 65' to 67' . A number of big bands were popular then . The Birdwatchers, Mark Markham and the Jesters, The Beaver Patrol, The Body Shop . Great dance bands doing good covers of Vanilla Fudge , Young Rascals, a lot of soul . These were weekly dances, too . But, in 196 8 intergation came in which occasioned big fights after ball games and dance s so it Killed them . Also, maybe because pot became popular, and who wants t o dance behind pct? Actually, this was the death of a social mechanism whic h was very important then, just as now . Sad . To my memory, this is the onl y new scene since it's demise . The lchllar , Screaming Sneakers, Reactions , Eat, and the Eggs . FISH : Barry Elliott? Do you feel his loss from the orginal Eggs line-up ? Or, if the music is strong enough, does the personal really matter ? C .P : Yeah, Cause Barry was definetaly the main character of the old band . A lot of girls liked him . He was a good white guitar player . Of course th e personal is important ; because the guys in the band have got to know the difference betwwen executing Chuck Berry ala Johnny Winter or Keith Richar d Johnny Winter played it very Exciting, But white ; an Extremely caucasian feel . Where as Keith whumped and pumped the songs into life . FISH : Did you ever notice how guys tend to become individuals and dance a lone to the Eggs ? C .P : I don't know . Never noticed . Our music is sort of guy's music, but , on the other hand, I don't think there is such a thing . Girls love Van Hale n but are just too afraid to g) to their concerts alone .Scared d of th e guys who go . I guess . Your're asking me to define the obvious, but I can't . This thing about the subject matter of songs ; I don't like songs that whin e about loves lost . Insinuations of be and do something great appeals more t o guys than girls . On the other hand, we certainly don't put down girls . W e like em! It's sort of obvious .

FISH : What was your first band ? C .P The Eggs was the first band I was ever in . Never been asked tha t : question before, by the way . FISH : Reviews? good, bad, indifferent? Have they effected your musica l direction ? C .P : Yeah . Especially with the second 45 . Right now I'm being tagged as a T er artist ; which is like being a minor league ball player . And I fee l it . So the next 45's doing to br two originals . "Phantom Train" and a second original which I hope Eddie O'brian will co-write . FISH : Local hands . be honest ; who's gonna ruin ? C .P : I would have said the Reactions before they broke up . A great romantic hard pop band . Th :ir music, their lyrics . People wom " t believe it, bu t it's tru . . I don't really know much about the busines s end of rock and roll . \o, in N .Y . or L .A . you're selling sound . You soun d the same here as anywhere else . We'd like g o someday, sure . FISH : Would you describe yourself as (perhaps) a musical 'anachronism' ? - yeah, but I'm trying to move on . To develop the music that died i n 1970 . Where the Rolling Stones should have gone . Where Creedence could have gone . Where Lou Reed didn't go . The Stones could ' , ve gone much deeper int o their original music instead of skimming the ra . And talk about disappointment?! Lou Reed lost all of his intenseness after his earlier work . FISH : Who's your dream girl? Give us the top three or, un to ten if you'r e into lists ! and 3) Dorianne Reis . FISH : Rock clubs . What pisses you off? How about Tampa's Cuban Club? Ar e you mad that there's so much (too much) restriction on 'originals' bands ? CP : Oh, the same things which make everyone else angry . The owners know that they can fill a club with a garbage cover band . I heartily dislik e the 'giving thing' type of club mentality that panders to the fantasti c fashionable genre . Why don't people dance as opposed to staring worship fully at the bands? The Tampa club is great, I just wished that peopl e danced more . FISH : Exposure? The rock press ? CP : Everyone loves rave reviews, sure . And seeing themselves in print ; that's only human . I don't particularly care to read reviews . How do you translate from one media to another? You can't really write about somethin g you heard . The reviewer says "he sang great, he played great" . It's a personel peeve and I loathe record reviews . You simply can't conv,' what yo u heard on the record . A perfect example : how to convey 'Anarchy in the U .K .' ? By saying "it's very energetic??!!" That's pure irony ! FISH : How did the local Dania boy decide he could 'make it' in the rock and . roll world? Inspirations? The Mascaro mystique? How much or how little di d Robert Mascaro (former Cichlids' manager-ed .) have to do with your direction ? CP : I'm not sure I can come up with the out-front answer you perhaps want . T fortunate to have gotten where I have and I wouldn't be surprised if i t stopped tomorrow . Robert and I have been friends for years . We talked and complained about music for years . All through the 70's drudge, we didn' t know what was wrong . Then, we got the CBGB's first compilation album . Th e Tough Darts summed up what was wrong with rock and roll by playing "All Fo r The Love Of Rock And Roll'which was essentially "Route 56 ." And this wa s 1976! Mascaro wanted to do music . My junior year of high school, in 1970 , Pobert Mascaro showed me four chords .. I was in a play at the time calle d "The Impossible Years" and had lots of spare time between rehearsals . FISH : The 45 cover formats . Who's idea? Then, what's next ? CP : Ted or Walter's, I frankly forget . The constant color combo? It was kind a co-idea really . What's the nerit project after the third single? I don' t know . Maybe a live ablum ; maybe a studio album . Mostly, we're just trjin g to focus on the next single . . But if I were to do an album I'd rather i t were live cause we could do more covers . I want to do'Shake Some Action ' so bad I can taste it . On a live album we could get away with more, you know ? FISH : The sessions, Charlie . g ould you really rather play the guitar part s yourself, than go to the trouble of teaching what you want to the lates t guys in the band's line up ? CP : It's just a question of . . . in the studio one player can play severa l tracks . Ok, it's really which player plays the tracks that are right fo r each particular song . For instance : Johnny Sultan plays a great bluesy lea d guitar that I wouldn't be able to play in five years . But, I play rhyth m guitar on the records? Confront the obvious . If it's that important Barr y Elliott played on 'Feeling .' I played all the guitar on "White Light Whit e Heat' . Barry played all guitar on 'If This is Love' . I played all all guita r on 'Slow Death' . It only makes sense . Since I know what I want and can do it myself, quicker, why bother to teach someone all the fucking parts?

I don't rorr .y abou t to tell the truth . People want to have fun on Saturday night . Legitimate roocand roll, boy-girl, bla bla . It's fun music and I hope peopl e realise (I guess they do) and come to see us play . I don't generally like unique music . I like American folk music, .which to me spells rock and roll . Some guys want to go deep into expanding the width of rock and roll wit h chords and synthisizers . I want to expand explore the depth . Like, ho w deep can you go?! Look what John Fomarty did with 'dorm on the Bayou . ' I'm just not interested in music which sounds like machines or factories . Rock and Roll is the definitive american folk music . Human . And it shoul d reflect humaness . Not just "everybody around me is a machine but I' m different and lonely . Look at the Britieh thing ; the voices sound like r: u .chines and they try to sound as such , ISH : Girls in rock? Come on now . You are an ace iconoclastic when i t comes to women . Who are the girls you admire in music ? CP : As an artist? Or who would I like to jump in bed with ? FISH : Both, Chuck ; and give us the det Us . CP : Melanie, for having the guts to sing with that voice and putting a lo t character into her songs .Gebbie Cichlid ; she's a great song writer an d over all personality . Just like Springsteen, she writes, she entertains , she puts herself into all of her songs . I did not have a crush on her, b y the way . . .Debbie Harry for having the guts . S'-la stands up will under pressure . She was strong enough to b e the pressure cooker and withstanding the fame of the whole group . But, there's more legitimate ones ; way more legitimate . Janis Joplin , a great super blues lady . Grac e Slick provided us with a lot o f laughs in the press . Bonnie Rait t plays slide guitar that is worl d class . Marianne Faithful? I thin k somebody stood her up to the mike . How many songs did she write ? Patti Smith of course . Always . FISH : The future, Charlie? Wil l you ever stop playing? If all els e failed, world you go into management? Settle for college? Settle , period ? CP : No . I'll always play the guitar . With anybody, anytime, jamming . It' s what I truly enjoy most . FISH : Wouldn't you rather be playing baseball ? CP : can do both . I played guitar in the garage eJ.tr I'enry Lindahl, and up at college by myself on slide . It's what I like . The Eggs were the firs t band I was ever in . I've never been asked that before .

One of the few places you might think a scene would survive coul d be 'amna, Florida . In fact, compared to what I have found else where(in terms of ratio), Tt's quite good and if you're in Florida it' s the p1a.ec to go . The Tampa seen' may not appear to be much on t-e surface but it' s symbiosis goes a lot further . Extremely good undiscovered talent hav e been coming out of Tam pa which I dare say is better than many signe d bands . Lee Warren, one of the "forefathers" of the music scene, now live s in Baltimore, Maryland with his current group, NON BROTIC BALE BONDING . NEMB, the last time I heard, was e three man band containing guitar, bass , keyboards, vocals, and drum machine . I've heard a demo tape of thei r material and immediate favourites were "I Never Smoked . . . " and "Bobby' s Girl" . :et's just say at minimum it's good . Lee ^ . .s in one of the "early era" Tar: ra groups with Bill Carey an d Lester l sser . Bill went on to form the which would later h e known as the STICK FIGURES . Lester's interests would soon evolve int o the STRAIT JACKETS . Lester is now with ITIVE ROANCE . The JETSONS since their conception had few changes besides drummer s and their name . They became the STICK FIGUHSa mainly because peopl e would ask to hear the "Jetson's Theme" . Although the STICK Fl,Jh S are constantly trading instruments, they can e commonly associated wit h certain ones . Dansby, guitar, Dave Bowman, bass, Rachel Bowman, vocals and percussion , and Rob Dansby on drums . They produce a rich sound with constant inter action . Visuals such as films and slides are often used . They ar e basically 5 individuals in a group . Their personal tastes differ from one another and probably is the main reason why they are so real , original and GOOD . The STICK FIGURES have released a 4 song EP o n GREEN Records, a Tampa label . The group has since moved to the North east in search of better exposure . The STRAIT JACKETS were an excellent live band that thrived on anger and teenage frustration . They had the music and they had the look . Their lineup during their peak consisted of Lester Esser(guitar, vocals), Robert Woodrich(vocals, bass), Darren Rademakertguitar, vocals) , and drummer Allen Esser . They recorded an independent LP in Septembe r 1980 which may never be released . Darren soon left the group due t o

Lester and brother Allen were the Main writing force behind th e STRAIT JACKETS . They went on to form PRIMITIVE ROMANCE with bassis t Randy Barnwell . A NEW PERSONALITY consists of Darren(guitar, vocals), Brent Rademaker(bass, vocals), and Steve "Fish" Fisher on drums . At presen t A NEW PERSONALITY are a finely atoned trio having a highly rythmi c sound which could easily be mistaken as Liverpoolian . Their recen t three song EP is representative of this . They are on the GREEN Records label with fine production by BillSCarey/Dave Bowman . A NEW PERSONALITY is as consistent and unique as their EP . PRIMITIVE ROMANCE has progressed rapidly since their birth i n June 1981 . The band can barely keep up with the fresh material tha t Allen and Lester constantly turn out . The music has dynasism wit h tones ranging from pop to menacing . They also have recently release d a three song flexi disc on DOT CITY Records . Like the STICK FIGURES , PRIMITIVE ROMANCE has moved to the Northeast(Boston) in the grea t quest of exposure . Although'some of the better components have gone, the scenehasn' t suffered .

Presently there is only one new music venue called tie MS . LUCKY CLUB. it's small and a bit shabby but offers lots of atmosphere . Twice a month the three floor Cuban Club is rented out with 3-5 bands appearing and sometimes as many as 400 people turning out . The club-goers have a high authenticity about them with relativly few posers . The crowds are urualiv very fashion conscious and respec t each others personal tastes, music or otherwise . TALPA THEATRE is the in-place to see a flick . Foreign, Avant-:garde , and New Mu-1c films are host of the fare that the theatre offers . Three years ago Tampa was blessed with a new radio station. WKNF(88 .5) began to liberate the airwaves with it's listener sronsered programming . What they clay can be be;t deseribed as "anything yo u don"t hear on the radio " . Their liberal format -_ages from Big Band to Jazz to New Wave and Reggae . Pam Wiener began the New Wave shows which has now expanded with more DJ's and more airtime . Listeners not only -et to hear the very latest releases but n' 'sonal re quests as well . sides music, neneena : 'interviews wit ;? 1oc-1 and. major talent and any relative useful information is aired . Tampa is small and not very liberal but most of the scene has th e right idea . I hope the newer generations will expand on that idea .

LONG PLAYS x x x [xj

THE GUN CLUB "FIRE OF LOVE" (RUB Y LP)--- The Gun Club play a mixtur e of L .A . thrash, New Orlean s voodo, delta blues, and American psychobilly . How bout X mee t Creedence Clearwater Revival? I t comes off rather well, althoug h they do occasionally stretc h things out a bit too long for m y tastes . Most interesting gimmic k of the month : TttiO slide guitar'sts t Watch out Charlie! Neat cover .t-")? J EY P,LES3 IN GAZA "CAUGHT I N FLUX (CHERRY REF = )--. Eyeless in Gaza's premier d,, :.bl e LP represents fine efforts simplifying the mu.cal approache s of the "post mode . ist' schoo l (such a music predicted by Jo y Division and Echo) . indeed, Eyeles s merely punctuates their song s with the "is it psye'e'elic ' guitar one hears in band s '.ke Echo and Wah . The darkness Is merely a prelude here to confirm life , whatever hope that is but th e bands approach is so firm , tangible that the philosophy mus t be valid . This "trust step' ma y also apply to t -e lyrics, whic h cre hard to make out rsnctly bu t judging by the vocalist's abilit y to strain in just such a way . . . we believe them . The material o n the album is all very satisfying , in the way than : YMG's "Final Day " captured the t;ewilderment, th e innocence of an age r ften mistaken for simple . Recommended . (Adam Klein)

One o f letdowns with the "reopsychedelic " bands thes e days was that rot a one of them reminded m e of Television . Yeah, it probabl y IS my nroblem, but it always seemed to me that if there was a precedent for merging punk an d psychedelic sensibilities, you couldn't beat Television ; textured layers of rambling, improvisationa l guitars, and space-case lyrics performed with a jagged urgency . Leader Verlaine was one of th e most original sounding guitarist s to emerge in years and it's a shame that in the 3 years since th e band's breakup, he's only just no w gotten around to his 2nd solo LP . Not that the 1st one was bad, it' s just that the guitars didn't start heating up until the last tune . No such problem here though, a s 'There's A Reason" kicks off wit h guitar tracks jumping in and out , woven together in the finest T .V . tradition . Most of "Dreamtime ' showcases this interplay as if to compensate for the last LP's, . . uh . . .mellowness . And if "Fenetrat ion" or "Mary Marie" seem a bi t too jagged at first, there' s always "Without A Word" whic h is as pretty a ballad as I've heard all year. "Dreatime" reasserts some of the punk and regains the "edge" that made Television so great . Verlaine remain s the best-kent secret in town . Pun .

THRORRTNG GRISTLE"GREATES T HITS" (ROUGH TRADELP)--- No w that the legacy is over thi s compilation LP will probably giv e Throbbing Gristle the commercia l success that's been denied to them . AOR stations are sure to play i t to death and I'm sure that cove r story in Rolling Stone won't b e long to follow . OK . . . ENOUGH . . . I haven't lost my mind yet . Actually this is alot more listenable than what I had expected, gtill it's not for everyone . Dance music for lobotomise d paraplegics . Play it for you r neighbors, they'll never look a t you the same . (BOZ )

FIRE ENGINES (FAST AMERIC A LP)--- The Fire Engines featur e agressive and fast guitars tha t spiral off and explode in al l directions . Raunchy guitars g o apeshit! This American LP consist s of their two British singles plu s material from their mostl y instrumental mini-LP, " Lubricat e Your Living Room" . Congradulation s to Rough Trade for making thi s available in the U .S .A . (BOZ )

DELTA 5 "SEE THE WHIRL! " (PRE LP)---- After four fine generally ignored classic singles , we finally have a Delta 5 LP . This is a new refined sound whic h was hinted at previously . There' s less emphasis on the heavy fun k beat, instead more attentio n is placed on those lovely voices , and the songs themselves . Th e addition of horns is a pleasan t touch, as it was on the Teardro p Explodes LP . I understand tha t their live sound is more raw and danceable, but since I live i n Miami I'll probably never be abl e to find out for myself . A n enjoyable LF to listen to . (BOZ)

JOEBOY "JOEBOY IN ROTTERDAM/ SAN _ FRANCISCO"(BACKSTREET/BACKL AS H LP) . . . Music without moments . Rather a sparse and disturbing drag through a despair so poten t as to be terrorizing . Something o f an organ grinders dirge on side A is sticking . A careless and distorted pomp full of curiousity an d suspicion . Yes, suspicion, i n particular, distorts what would b e a gratifying "Urban Leisure" . What is that snippet of filth-tal k at the start of this? Finally Wil d Boys is a utopian tale told throug h the spliced documentary, injecte d persona flashback formula and i t works well . Ilove this record Worth hearing!(Adam Klein)

'ATFE OF HATE" NE R O"/"INC :NFRA_'Ji " ( __N1NG ROME 1,'") -- - The machin e run drums or "Nero" start th e death march . . . right, left, forward they don't stop pounding . A share angular g uitar cuts in , joined by a wailing, 'ex and thos e familar p leading vocals . This i s agressive desperate music . Th e production is stronger this tim e and the band sounds as spirite d as ever . " Incinerator" from thei r live LF is also available here i n an improved version . (BO'Z )

(feLYDOR DOUBLE7")--- The :reatures are Siouxsie Sioux an d Budgie, drummer for the Banshees . This double EP consists . of 5 tunes , lust vocals and drums . It's a ful l and rhythmic sound ; tribal, exoti c and quite danceable . An interesting experiment that works well . (BOZ )

'NAKED SKINNIES "ALL MYLI"rt" / 'THIS T i; T-1E: BEAII'PTFUT, n1GH'1' " (CAKED HOLD , : 7") -- - This recor d was sent to me py TKA, the edito r of The Offense, a great zine fro m Columbus . well . ., leave it to m y idiot mailman who managed to ben d this record in order to make i t fit in my mailbox . After a desperat e atte'.wt at trying to unbend it, I got it to play once before I ha d to send it to the scrapeyard . Al l I can remember was that "All M y Life" started out slow an d gradually built up in momentium . The singer kept repeating somethin g that vaguely reminded . me of Ia n Curtis ("I rut <<y trust in you . . . in you . . .in you . . . " ) . My initia l impression was favorable . I f interested send 2 to Naked Hous e Records, 1585 N . High St . , Columbus, Ohio 43201 . (EOZ )

2,J ORDER "FROG^:-SION"/"EVERYTHING' S _;JNE GREEN" (-ACTORY 7 " ) - e- Ne w order continue their break fro m the past . "Procession" begins wher e "Ceremony" left off . The guita r is not as prominent, however th e overall eff , ct is more fluent, a beautifully textured blend o f sound . More positive and upliftin g than anything by Joy Division . "Everything's Gone Green" feature s ar. Ian Curtis like vocal . Personall y I find the synthesizer somewha t overbearing, it :teems to throw th e songs chemistry slightly off wack , but heck, I'm only knitpicking . If I had to make a choice for a single of the month column thi s would be it . (BOZ )

Te: LYRES (ACE OF HEARTS 12" EP) --- Good 1960's influenced garag e music . No w,mny retreads here! Th e Lyres actually have the arroganc e and conviction to make it work . Tt is record's got it all ; nast y vocals, cheesy organ . parts , biting guitar breaks, all performe d in true 1966 raveup abandon al a the Sonics or Remains(you can fil l in your own favorite) . at ver y ori g inal but who cares .
