Dear masters students, Welcome to the Department of Epidemiology! We are delighted to welcome the current cohort of trainees, and are deeply committed to assuring that each one of you has an optimal educational experience in the Department of Epidemiology. Our masters degree offerings are designed to prepare students for careers in a wide array of public health research and service settings. Our students are provided the skills to design, conduct, interpret and apply research into the causes, prevention, and control of human disease towards the ultimate goal of improving the publics health. The curriculum emphasizes mastery of methods of epidemiological research and is enriched by additional courses on a large range of important disease outcomes, such as AIDS, tuberculosis, and cancer, and on factors that may be important in disease causation, such as genetics, nutrition, and influence of the social and physical environment. A quick overview of the information presented in this guide:

In Section I we list the four masters degree offerings in the Department of Epidemiology, with brief descriptions of each. These descriptions reference specific components of the overall masters program, including coursework, certificate, practicum, and thesis. In Section II we describe components of the masters program, and include a snapshot of how these program components correspond to each of the four degree offerings. Section II provides a listing of the 20 certificate programs open to Epidemiology students, with links to the corresponding webpages that describe course requirements for Epidemiology students. We also provide full copies of the 6 certificates that are housed within the Department of Epidemiology. Section III provides information about the key sources of support and advice for masters students and describes resources and activities designed to optimize your educational experience in the Department.

Section I
Masters degree offerings in the Department of Epidemiology
The Department of Epidemiology offers four Masters degree programs:

The Columbia MPH Program in Epidemiology


Completed in: 2 years Includes: Certificate in one of 20 school-wide programs The Columbia MPH program offers an integrated interdisciplinary school-wide curriculum in which students select one of 24 Certificates that provides a secondary area of expertise in addition to students departmental focus, in this case, Epidemiology. Students take the interdisciplinary core courses in the fall semester of their first year, and the bulk of the methods sequence (Epidemiology and Biostatistics) courses in the spring semester. With the exception of students undertaking the Global Health Certificate, most students will undertake a practicum during the summer between years one and two. Most of the certificate courses are taken in the second year, during which time the students will also write a masters thesis that brings together skills and approaches from the Epidemiology methods and content from the Certificate.

The Accelerated MPH in Epidemiology


Completed in: 1 year The Accelerated MPH is designed for highly motivated professionals seeking to enhance their careers with a degree in public health. The curriculum is similar to the two year MPH but completed at a faster, more demanding pace. The curriculum provides the broad, systemic understanding, critical thinking skills, and leadership training needed to tackle todays complex public health problems and work effectively with a variety of professional settings. Candidates for the Accelerated MPH will have one of these qualifications:

A doctoral degree (such as an MD, DDS, PhD, JD, DNSc, EdD, etc.) A nearly completed doctoral degree (within 24 months of completion) A Masters degree (such as an MS, MA, MBA, MSN) and at least 5 years related work experience

Students will take the integrated core courses and one substantive epidemiology course in the fall semester. In the spring semester students will complete the ISP, take Leadership and Critical Thinking, the methods sequence (with the exception of Epi III) and two additional substantive epidemiology courses. Epidemiology III will be completed in the first summer session. Students will undertake a practicum part time during the spring and/or the summer in order to complete all degree requirements in one year. Given the time constraints of the degree, a Masters thesis is not required.

The MS in Epidemiology
Completed in: 2 years The Master of Science (MS) in Epidemiology is a research degree, usually undertaken by individuals who hold another graduate or professional degree in a related discipline such as MD, DDS, DO, MSN, or PhD. The program is designed to provide trainees with a command of major concepts and techniques in epidemiology as well as a solid foundation in biostatistics. Students will learn the skills necessary to develop testable hypotheses and design research projects, from clinical trials to broad population studies. Graduates of the program often go on to become independent researchers. While the competencies achieved through the MS program are the same as those for students enrolled in the MPH program, MS students concentrate on research methodology specific to the discipline of epidemiology, are exempted from the practicum and have fewer required courses to take.

The Executive MS in Epidemiology


Completed in: 22 months (one three-day weekend per month) The Executive MS in Epidemiology (cuexecmsepi.org) is designed to provide working professionals with the additional knowledge, skills, and credentials needed to advance in their current position or turn their career in a new direction. Executive MS students are highly motivated professionals who work in health departments, academic settings, pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, and other healthcare settings in the US and abroad. With a weekend class schedule, the program is tailored to accommodate the professional and family obligations of our students. Classes are held one long weekend (Friday-Sunday except for the last semester of the program) per month for 22 months. Faculty advisors are available on the weekends that classes meet, and by phone or email throughout the month. Like our standard MS, the Executive MS will provide trainees with a command of major concepts and techniques in epidemiology as well as a solid foundation in biostatistics. Students will learn the skills necessary to develop testable hypotheses and design research projects, from clinical trials to broad population studies. Executive MS students are exempted from the practicum requirement. They are not required to attend departmental seminars, although students are welcome and strongly encouraged to attend as many seminars as possible over the two years.

A note about advising in the Department of Epidemiology


Incoming Epidemiology masters students are all assigned a faculty adviser. Students are strongly encouraged to set up an introductory meeting with their advisors in the very first month of their first semester, and to follow up with additional meetings in the first semester or very early in the second to discuss thesis ideas. The faculty adviser can assist the student in finding a data set for the thesis and a thesis reader who is familiar with the topic the student wants to address.

The interdisciplinary core


The interdisciplinary core includes courses taken during the fall semester of the first year that fall within five groupings called Studios. The five studios are Foundations of Public Health, the Biological and Environmental Determinants of Health, Social, Behavioral and Structural Determinants of Health, Health Systems, and Methods for Research Design and Evaluation. Students will be separated into groups of twenty with a faculty member for a discussion-based course entitled Integration of Science and Practicum, which continues into the spring semester of the first year. Finally, students will take, in their spring semester, a course on Leadership and Innovation.

The methods sequence


Completed in: 2 years The methods sequence is a central feature of all the MPH and MS degrees offered by the Department of Epidemiology. For Epidemiology students, most of the methods sequence will be taken in the spring semester of year one, although students will take Epidemiology III in the fall of the second year or the summer between years one and two. The methods sequence consists of a series of essential epidemiology and biostatistics methodology courses that provide an increasingly honed understanding of the tools and skills required to function as an epidemiologist. Additional course requirements


Masters students in each degree program have additional course requirements beyond the methods sequence.

Students enrolled in the Columbia MPH will be working towards a certificate. Each certificate has its own set of required courses and students must follow the certificate guidelines to know which courses are required. Certificate course information is provided later in these Guidelines. Students in the Accelerated MPH will take three substantive epidemiology courses chosen from the list below. Students in the standard MS program must take two substantive epidemiology courses and an elective course from any department across the Mailman School. All substantive courses offered within the Department of Epidemiology are below. Students in the Executive MS program will take three advanced methods courses in addition to the standard methods sequence:

The certificate
Every student in the two-year Columbia MPH program enrolls in a certificate program which provides training in a focused area of expertisein addition to the students departmental disciplineand leads to a Columbia University approved credential. The certificate programs have been developed in consultation with public health employers and other key stakeholders and reflect todays most sought-after skills and knowledge. Detailed information on all certificate programs is available online. Students taking the Columbia MPH within the Department of Epidemiology are able to select a certificate from 20 of the 24 school-wide certificate programs. The practicum
MPH students in the Department of Epidemiology undertake an epidemiologically-relevant practicum (mailman.columbia.edu/academic-departments/epidemiology/academics/masterspracticum) in a public health setting where they receive hands-on mentored experience. Students choose between practicum opportunities in New York City, in institutions throughout the United States, as well as in settings overseas. The standard Epidemiology practicum is the equivalent of two months of full time work (at least 280 hours) although some students with considerable prior work experience will be able to fulfill the practicum requirement with fewer hours (140 hours) at the discretion of the practicum director. Undergraduate internships are not counted as prior work experience. The majority of students undertake their practicum during the summer between their first and second years, although there are exceptions. Many studentsparticularly accelerated MPH studentswill want to begin the practicum part time in the spring and continue through the summer. Epidemiology MPH students in the Global Health Certificate are required to undertake a six months practicum in an overseas setting, usually from July through December. The objective of the practicum experience is to provide an opportunity for students to develop epidemiology and general public health competencies (students will be required to address competencies outlined by the American Schools of Public Health, (asph.org/userfiles/ AJPHSept08_Development_MPH_Core_Competency_Model.pdf) and to practice and extend skills acquired through their course work. Columbia MPH students who are on campus during the fall semester of the second year (not Accelerated MPH students who will have graduated or students in the Global Health Certificate program who will still be overseas) will be required to complete an abstract of their practicum experience and participate in the Epidemiology Masters Day by making an oral or poster presentation. Epidemiology MPH students are assisted through the practicum preparation process by Epidemiology faculty member and director of the practicum program, Dr. Joyce Pressley (with the exception of students in the Global Health Certificate). In the fall semester, Epidemiology MPH students will complete certifications in CITI Human Subjects Protection and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) (mailman.columbia.edu/academicdepartments/epidemiology/masters-practicum/other-resources), a practicum advising survey and attend the Epidemiology practicum seminar series. The seminar series prepares the students for the practicum by introducing them to the overall process, placement options, search strategies and tips for preparing a competitive application and optimizing their practicum performance. The Global Health Certificate students have their own pre-practicum seminars led by Dr. Anne Paxton in the spring semester of year one. Additional practicum seminars are organized and led by the school on select topics. Prior to beginning the practicum, all students complete a practicum agreement form detailing the scope, duration, and supervision of practicum activities. Upon practicum completion, the student and mentor complete an evaluation. Faculty level practicum advising is available beginning in the fall semester and continuing as needed through completion of the practicum.

Masters thesis
The masters thesis is the culmination of the students educational experience at Mailman. Ideally, students will begin to seek out and become involved with faculty with whom they have common research interests in their first year. The students faculty adviser can be helpful in identifying a faculty reader and in thinking through the identification of the research question and dataset. During the spring of the first year, the student will identify a topic, which should be an important, answerable scientific question, as well as a thesis advisor or first reader who will mentor the student through the thesis process. The first reader should be a faculty member from the department. Students have the option of a second reader, frequently someone associated with practicum or the thesis data, who will provide additional support and confer with the first reader on the thesis grade. The second reader can be any researcher with a doctoral degree, either someone from the Mailman community or someone outside the institution. The thesis data set should be from an epidemiologic study large enough to analyze using standard epidemiologic statistical methods. Students often use faculty members datasets, publicly available datasets, or data from a practicum site if it is suitable for thesis work, although the thesis and practicum do not have to be linked. Columbia University policy on research by students requires that all thesis projects be submitted for IRB approval prior to beginning data analysis. (Students who are working with publicly available datasets should check in with Dr. Joyce Pressley prior to preparing an IRB submission.) The first reader for the thesis should be identified by August of the second year. The student and thesis readers agree on the hypothesis and specific aims of the thesis in September. The IRB is submitted in late September or early October to ensure that approval is granted with sufficient time to permit exploratory data analysis. The first half of the thesis is completed in the fall semester of the second year, and the thesis is finalized in the spring with April 15 as the deadline for the final thesis. Two courses have been designed to assist students in the thesis process. Masters Thesis in Epidemiology I (P9419) is offered in the fall of the second year, and P9420 Masters Thesis in Epidemiology II (P9420) in the spring. Students in the Global Health Certificate are not able to take Masters Thesis I in person because they are overseas, but have access to course materials via Courseworks and are expected to follow along and return from their placement with data and readers in hand prepared to complete the thesis by April 15 of the second semester. Columbia MPH students in interdisciplinary certificate programs may propose an alternative thesis format commensurate with interdisciplinary learning. Alternative thesis formats will be considered on case-by-case basis. This will allow for a harmonization of the thesis across departments for interdisciplinary certificates. Accelerated MPH students are not required to write a Masters thesis. The thesis program is under the direction of Dr. Joyce Pressley (jp376@columbia.edu).

Department sponsored seminars, grand rounds, and symposia


Students are encouraged to attend as many departmental, CUEGR and cluster seminars as possible to obtain a broad understanding of current topics and debates in epidemiology today. A specific number of seminars is required for each degree (for example, 18 over a two year period for the Columbia MPH) as outlined in the table on page 7.

Department Seminars are held monthly and showcase the research and work being done by faculty and students in the Department. Seminars are held on Fridays from 12:00-1:00 p.m. in Hess Commons. The Columbia University Epidemiology Grand Rounds (CUEGRs) is a monthly lecture series hosting global leaders in epidemiology who share their groundbreaking work with the Departments faculty and students, as well as with the Columbia community at-large. CUEGR lectures present a broad range of topics and foster academic exchange around key issues in epidemiology. In addition, the series helps forge important links between the Department and leading figures and programs in epidemiology throughout the world. All events, which are open to the public, consist of a 60-minute lecture followed by a 30-minute discussion period, in which audience members are encouraged to participate. Moreover, speakers are invited to spend the day at Columbia with ample time to engage faculty and students prior to the lecture. This intimate format maximizes the experience for both guests and Mailman School participants and can include visits with journal clubs and other groups on campus, lunch, etc. CUEGR lectures are held on Wednesday from 4:005:30 p.m. in the 8th Floor Auditorium, unless otherwise indicated. The Department of Epidemiology is organized into six clusters, each of which has regularly scheduled Cluster Seminars for faculty and students. The six clusters include Epidemiology Innovation, Social Epidemiology, Lifecourse Epidemiology, Psych-Neuro Epidemiology, Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Chronic Disease Epidemiology.

In addition to the regularly scheduled seminars, the Department sponsors several formal, fullday symposia each year. Columbia University Epidemiology Scientific Symposia (CUESS) bring the best minds in our field together for a full day of discussions on the most pressing health questions of our time. Students are strongly encouraged to take full advantage of the symposia Schedule information on all seminars and symposia is available on the Department of Epidemiology Events page (mailman.columbia.edu/academic-departments/epidemiology/ news-and-events) as well the Mailman School calendar web page (mailman.columbia.edu/ events). In addition, all events are announced weekly in the Department Chairs monthly email to students.

Questions or concerns?
In the Department of Epidemiology, the faculty and administrative leaders of the masters program are available to address the concerns of masters students, academic or otherwise. Center for Student Wellness


The purpose of the Center for Student Wellness (CSW) works to promote health and enhance learning by addressing health-related barriers to academic success. The EPIC Fund


The EPIC Fund was created using the revenue generated by the Epidemiology and Population Health Summer Institute at Columbia University (EPIC) and other Departmental gifts. It is a funding source for Department trainees pursuing research and training opportunities beyond those covered by their standard tuition. Potential uses for the EPIC fund include but are not limited to:

travel for conferences; priority will be given to trainees who are presenting findings at professional meetings purchase of ebooks, datasets, or samples for a study tuition for specific training needs, such as short courses, workshops, and training in software packages or lab techniques research related items that will contribute to the trainees research (for example, data collection)

There are three EPIC funding cycles: applications will be accepted on January 30, May 30, and September 30 each year.

The Department of Epidemiology sponsors four Socials each year to celebrate holidays, honor achievements, and to bring faculty, staff, and students together in a festive setting. Certificate: Epidemiology of Chronic Disease


Chronic diseases account for 6 of the top 7 causes of death in the United States according the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. From cardiovascular disease to diabetes to cancer and pulmonary disease, chronic diseases claim far more lives than such infectious diseases as pneumonia and influenza. And as the population ages, the burden of these diseases is only likely to increase. The same is true overseas and, increasingly, in developing countries. The Certificate in the Epidemiology of Chronic Disease provides students with a deep grounding in epidemiologic methodologies to better understand these complex diseases. Students will also have access to the vast network of Mailman School faculty working at the forefront of chronic disease prevention and treatment in areas such as diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Courses will explore how chronic diseases tend to share certain characteristics, such as generally longer latencies and etiologies that stem heavily from lifestyle and social factors, including tobacco use, obesity, and lack of physical activity. Coursework will use methodological approaches common to research on chronic disease, such as case-control studies and cohort studies, biomarkers, and genetics, to investigate topics. In addition, students will undertake research projects both as part of their masters thesis work and to have the experience of working and perhaps publishing with the outstanding chronic disease faculty.

Building on our facultys extensive history of global health research and service programs the Global Health Certificate offers students the breadth of coursework and skills needed to successfully operate in the international public health arena. Drawing from courses across departments as well as other schools at the University, the programs interdisciplinary focus steeps students in traditional global health priorities such as poverty reduction, maternal health, prevention of neonatal and child mortality, infectious diseases, environmental sanitation, and access to safe drinking water, while also addressing new priorities including urbanization, rising rates of chronic diseases and obesity, climate change, aging populations, global mental health, and the health consequences of conflict. Students will be equipped to address health problems that transcend borders due to globalization and increasing migration. A six-month practicum experience working overseas enables students to apply classroom concepts in a real-world setting.

Certificate: Health of an Aging Society


Meeting the needs of our aging society is one of the most significant public health challenges of the 21st century. Strong public health leadership will be crucial to map the societal implications of aging, structure effective public health policies and programs to address the well-being and welfare of aging populations, and ensure that our collective future will benefit from the longevity we each hope to enjoy. The Health of an Aging Society Certificate will offer graduates an ecological approach to aging and comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives on aging in societies. As an aging society is often framed as a negative problem, the curriculum will consider ways to frame a rights-oriented perspective to policies and programs for older persons. Classes drawn from Epidemiology, Health Policy and Management and Sociomedical Sciences will introduce the major social, cultural, developmental and economic factors contributing to health and illness in aging populations. Students will gain a foundational understanding of the epidemiology of aging including major geriatric syndromes and co-morbidities as risk factors for adverse outcomes. Students will have the flexibility to pursue electives within the program whether his/her interests are research- methods, substantive topics on aging or age-related diseases, programming or policies specific to aging.

Certificate: Infectious Disease Epidemiology


Infectious diseases remain the leading causes of death worldwide. In the United States alone, more than 50,000 new HIV infections occur annually, more than 11 million people have latent TB infection, and sexually transmitted infections are reported with alarming frequency in specific subpopulations. Worldwide, the continuing global impact of the HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis epidemics; the emergence of previously unrecognized pathogens; and the threat of resistant pathogens have all focused attention on the need for public health professionals well trained in infectious disease issues. The Infectious Disease Epidemiology Certificate is dedicated to educating a new generation of epidemiologists with particular expertise in infectious disease. Drawing from classes offered by Epidemiology and departments across the School, coursework will analyze and evaluate current approaches and inadequacies of existing infectious disease strategies. Emphasis on the skills needed to identify, manage, and prevent infections in a rapidly changing global environment will be central to the program. The Infectious Disease Seminar series hosted by the Epidemiology Department offers another venue for students to be informed of new research findings in key infectious disease areas.

Certificate: Social Determinants of Health


Worldwide, health disparities are a stark and persistent problem that, in some cases, seems to be growing worse. Historically, understanding how health is impacted by social factors such as discrimination and stigmatization has been understudied. But today, an increasing focus on health disparities by governmental bodies calls for a new generation of professionals who can translate scientific findings on these issues into policy and practice. The Social Determinants of Health Certificate provides a strong, interdisciplinary foundation in social theory as well as the methodological tools needed for individuals interested in having an impact in this area of public health. Classes drawn from the departments of Epidemiology and Sociomedical Sciences will focus on the core theories of social stratification, inequality, and social justice; the social patterning of disease and mortality; and the social and biologic factors in the etiology of health outcomes. Students will also learn to address issues of causal inference and generate and test hypotheses using the appropriate methodological tools.
