Canada, Europe, and the Pacific For over 10 years, IES has acted as a bridge for Canadian interests in Europe, and vice versa. By attracting preeminent speakers, diplomats, policy-makers, industry leaders, and many others leading economic, environment, and cultural issues, IES is a catalyst for developing our relationship with Europe. Why Study Europe? Using a comparative perspective, studying the European experience provides insights on key issues such as climate change, currency regimes, nationalism, politics, governance, migration, drug policy, and security. Recent Institute Highlights IES is part of the strategic cluster, Canada-Europe Transatlantic Dialogue: Seeking Transnational Solutions to 21st Century Problems, a competitive grant awarded by Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, placing IES on the forefront of EU policy research in Canada. Over 20 events and key-note speakers were hosted by IES in 2008. Three alumni from the 2008 graduating class obtained highly competitive internships in Brussels. Over 40 trips were made between Canada and Europe in 2008 as part of the EU Study Tour, where students worked at government and nongovernment institutions. Professor Kurt Hbner moderated three panels on EU-Canada relations in 2009, at conferences supported by the European Commission, the European Delegation, the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. The Future of Europe-Canada: Economics, Environment, Society The UBC graduate program in European Studies is a vital step in preparing a new generation of leaders to understand and act on opportunities with Europe.
