The race is on

In most homes with school going children, the new academic year is not so academic this time of the year as everyone dons their competitive spirit and participates in schools athletics. Despite all the rain, no major floods occurred in the area and most schools in the area had managed to keep to their sports schedules. See inside for Laerskool Burgerforts inter house competition and Laerskool Ohrigstads Houtspele.

Seeking the help of a debt counsellor - an increasinly popular option

During the last year consumers increased their debt in various ways. Many are now left unable to repay what they owe. If you still have an income there may be the option of debt counselling to help you regain your financial freedom.
Last year a record number of consumers took to debt counselling for help with their debt. According to recent reports the majority of consumers who during the last year sought help with their debt were in danger of losing their homes or vehicles. In South Africa household debt amounted to more than R1 billion last year and according to Annabel Bishop, an economist for Investec, the average household has more than 32% unsecured debt than the year before. Gauteng is the province with the highest debt per capita. The average individual in Gauteng owed R4260. Debt takes on all forms and are often mortgage agreements, secured credit, unsecured credit, credit facilities and shortterm credit transactions. Limpopo is the province with the lowest debt per capita at around 4% of the total debt owed in South Africa. The average person in Limpopo owes R750. Data from the National Credit Regulator revealed that consumer debt in South Africa increased from R85 billion in 2011 to R104 billion in 2012. A debt counsellor may help you negotiate a repayment plan through which you will eventually become debt free, but will allow you to for the moment still have enough money to survive. It can also prevent you from losing your home or car. Visit a registered debt counsellor as soon as you realise your debt is out of hand. A registered debt counsellor is registered with the National Credit Regulator and will in a professional manner assist consumers to cope with their debt.

Atlatsa Resources to finalise Phase 2 restructuring in first half of this year

Atlatsa Resources said last week Friday that it expected to complete Phase 2 of its restructure plan by the first half of this year. The group entered discussions with Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) regarding a restructuring, recapitalisation and refinancing plan for its Bokoni operations, which would significantly lower its cost of borrowing. The mines future operational plan, capital budgeting and financing strategy, as well as its intended strategy going forward were re-examined, following a month-long illegal strike in October that resulted in the loss of 35 500 oz of platinum-group metals during the fourth quarter of 2012. Under the first phase, which was completed in September last year, Atlatsa and its subsidiaries Plateau Resources and the Bokoni group of companies consolidated outstanding debt and preference shares into its existing senior-term loan facility with Amplats. Atlatsa said it would publish the financial effects of the restructure plan and obtain shareholder approval after all the necessary internal and regulatory approvals for Phase 2 were obtained. Operations at Bokoni mine restarted in mid-December and post-festive-season reopening was implemented according to plan, with the mine and processing operations having normalised.

Leboeng Police still busy

The station management of SAPS Leboeng together with the Community Policing Forum and Youth Against Crime visited the community of Leboeng Gankoana on 23 January as part of a door-to-door campaign. Their main aim was to improve the service delivery. The station commander, Captain Solomon Moholane, visited the home of Ms Maria Nkoana in order to hear her compliments and complaints. He gave the community safety tips to avoid housebreaking and theft, which is prevalent in the area. He told the community them to ensure that all doors are locked at all times and that windows are closed when they are not at home. He said the community should install burglar bars at the doors and in front of the windows. He further told them to strengthen neighbourhood watch efforts and to mark their valuable property such as TV sets, DVD players and computers. Tools such as axes, spades, picks etc should also be locked away when they are not on use because they can be used in an attack. Meanwhile the operation to address the root causes of crime continued on Sunday and two people were arrested. A 48 year old man and 41 year old woman were arrested at Kgautswane for possession of dagga plants. 17 plants were confiscated. The two appeared at Leboeng Magistrates Court and they were fined R500. Is bullying the way for people in

South Africa became a proud beacon for peace when a peaceful transition into democracy finally took place in 1994. Since then many communities have waited for services, employment and a better life. The last few years have been marked with increasingly violent protests and demands as well as intolerance for what is not policy. Only in the last year many examples of socalled bullying tactics can be seen. The communities of De Doorns and Sasolburg took to violence to get their point accross. This was met by heavy handed action from the police. During last years wildcat strikes at Marikana, the end result was a tragedy that took many lives. The possible loss of jobs in the mining industry was also met with various threats, but also fear. Communities such as Khutsong in the West Rand was one of the first to get their way through violent protests when they were being incorporated into North West. They eventually got their way when almost three years later they were placed back into Gauteng. Bullying is not only about getting the way with better services, to rebel against authority or a way of negotiating labour issues. Observers says that there is also a more refined way of bullying. This can be seen in reactions from political parties facing critisism from communities, competitors, the media or through expression of art. Last year Brett Murrays painting, The Spear, caused a stir and both City Press and the Goodman Gallery eventually removed the painting from public view. This after fierce reaction from the ruling party and its allies. Over the last week First National Bank (FNB) came under fire for airing television advertisements in which high school children express their views of South Africa and what they would want for the future. These sometimes critial youthful views were not met with favour from the ruling party. The ANC, including the ANC Youth League and Womens League as well as the South African Communist Party (SACP) reacted sharply, calling it a political and treasonous campaign. Since the pressure piled on FNB, theyve altered the campaign to be less critical, removing videos carrying critique. Platinum Gazette this week asked readers whether they think South Africa is turning into a nation that relies on bullying rather that negotiating when something is not going their way. We asked what they think about the way protests and controversial issues are done and handled. They also offered what they think is the way to get the peace back in the community.

Ms Sophia Ndou said: Yes, we bully to get what we want. I dont know what will make it better.

Mnr.

Mr Victor Manoge said: People in South Africa are very hungry. People are coming from other countries taking jobs of South Africans. Unemployment etc. are making people angry. Government is confused because before apartheid it was whites against blacks and now it is blacks against blacks. They must rather keep talking instead of using these bullying tactics. In the end job creation is the key to peace. If people are busy there will be no time for this warawara.

Mr Collins Mushwana said: The problem is that there is a lot of corruption in our government. The police is trying to protect government. They must bully the people if the people are doing things that are not right. People must rather sit down and talk and all these things can be solved.

Mr Steve Juu Juu Njoya said: People should not break the laws like they are often doing during protests. They should not use violence and threats. People should be heard and that is why the protests are necessary, but they must be peaceful. Government should not disregard critique. Critique can be good. Like now with the FNB advert, they are bringing across what the youth, the future of South Africa thinks. They should not bully the bank. They should talk so that there are no misunderstandings. All parties should always understand what is happening and keep talking.

Ms Napo Khomotso and Mr Gilbert Manaso said: It is not the right thing to do to bully others to get what you want. Government and the people should discuss more what is the problem. People should also remember that is takes time to reach the goal. Everything will not be provided overnight.

Mr Lucas Mohlala, Mr Ronald Kobe and Mr Nhlanhla Khumalo said: Wed better sit down and talk. Destroying does not help. Government is doing its best. Demonstrating and destroying like now in Sasolburg is not the way. People are not being heard and that is why they turn violent. Government must communicate better. They must continuously communicate what are the plans for service delivery, what are the problems and where the money is going so that people know what is happening. Government delivers, but the leaders often dont. Money often goes to their own pockets and that is why people turn to bullying to get their way.

South Africa to get want they want?

Mr Phatudi Phasha said: The behaviour of the people are wrong. These days people suffer from superiority complex. Not only whites over blacks, but from all sides and all people. Revenge is not the way to go. People need to stay positive and try to understand each others difficulties. If government communicates properly it will be better. If we are waiting for water, and government promise but dont get back to us, the people get angry. If they communicate what is happening it will be better.

Mr Justice Mogane said: With this bullying they are killing the economy - both the government and the people. We are taking our own country down.

Mr Norman Malatji said: It seems that people are now no longer patient. They are no longer trusting the authorities. There is bullying because there is only mistrust from all sides. Government is also not patient in talking to the people. It is getting tough in South Africa. To normalise things there should be a platform where people can air their needs and government must do something tangible. Service delivery must be seen.

Mr Magate Sekonya and Mr Steve Kgwete said: If you have a problem with government dont stone cars etc. Here the police will also not warn people that there is a mob in town. You will get stuck in the middle. If you try to go back they will block you and if you go forward they want to know why you drive through them. People think they bully government, but if they destroy services that are already there like tar roads when they burn tyres on it - it is backward thinking. This comrade appointment is also nonsense. The bullying started in 2008 when Malema was used to fire Mbeki. If you teach your dog to bite everyone and there is nobody around, it will bite you. If you are a threat to government they will bully you. They must rather invite challenge.

Mr Innocent Zondi said: I think when we came into democracy we had high expectations. Some people thought everything will be free. Life does not work like that. Although we have problems we are a powerful nation and we can overcome it with hard work, education and peaceful means. We are not a bullying nation. We are impatient because we want things now and it is not the way it works. Constructive criticism should be accepted in South Africa, as long as there are no strings attached.

Me.

Links: Me. Cathy Blignaut en Me. Joan Blignaut s: Ons is n land van boelies. Mense raak gefrustreerd. Kyk hoe baie mens is al dood in stakings ens. Jy is vandag nie eens veilig in jou eie huis nie. By hulle is Dylan en Juan.

Mnr. By hom is Megan-Leigh.

Daar is sommer by die snoepie se afdag gebraai.

Jack and Fienie say goodbye

Totsiens Juffrou Bettie
Juffrou Bettie het in Maart 2009 haar lewenspad by Laerskool Burgersfort voortgesit. Ina Burger Namens Laerskool Burgersfort Herewith we wish to say good bye to all our friends and acquaintances in Burgersfort, Steelpoort, Ohrigstad and Lydenburg area. Thank you for all the wonderful times we had together since 2003. Dont want to make exception but just want to thank the Kwena Festival Committee that we worked with - Alan, Roelien, Lourens & Kotie - this was quite an experience! As you all know we love music and herewith we wish to thank the different choir conductors we worked with. Marinda Niemand, Jan Neetling, Elsa de Jager, Diane Wolhuter & Theresa Schoeman - last two we sang with the Valleie Choir together with the big choirs of Nelspruit and the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra. We had performances of choir and plays in Lydenburg, Nelspruit, Groblersdal and also in our community in Burgersfort, Steelpoort and Ohrigstad. Especially in churches of all denominations. What a privilege it was to bring joy and praise to our LORD through singing in a choir. We will never be able to forget these awesome experiences. Also to all the employees (previous and currently) that I worked with during the last nearly 4 years for their friendliness and all the friendship made. Thank you Alan Northcote - Construction Manager and also MY MENTOR! Dave Cox thank you also, for what you taught me about Construction and Projects. Thank you to the Project Team and the Management! Please pay us a visit when passing through Witbank. Regards Jack & Fienie Wuestenenk. 0737916994(J)/0769433817(F)

As a member of the public and a member of the business community, I make observations and see things happening. One of my observations is that there is a positive wind of change in the Police in Burgersfort. Towards the end of 2012 I could see a positive change in the following: 1. Effective and visible policing. 2. The neatness and tidiness of the uniforms and private clothing of members of the Force. 3. Faster and friendly service at the counter of the Charge Office. 4. A cleaner Police station. 5. A smaller build up of crime and robberies towards the festive season, compared to previous years. 6. Improvement in reaction time when crime is reported. 7. We get word of criminals being apprehended and processed in the system. Two important items on the action list of the Colonel is to get Business against Crime and Rural Safety Forums back in full operation. He would also like to improve service where there are still long queues at the Charge Office. Let us as the community respect the assets, rights and lives of other people. Let us influence others to do the same. Let us stop those who do not respect these important things. Let us support the Police by reporting crime, blowing the whistle on all corruption and by giving the Police all the information they need when they investigate cases. By doing that we will help them to protect us, including our assets, our rights and the lives of our families. Carl Lourens Burgersfort
