Digital Overdrive Chapter 12 Traditional and Digital Photography

Page 1 of 3 1) In 1834, Fox Talbot created a negative using a process called Calotype. Explain the process involved. The paper was dipped in silver chloride and fixed with salt. 2) Explain the Daguerreotype process and the creator. The positive image was created on silver plated copper that was coated with silver iodide then the image was developed into mercury, this method was developed in 1839 by Louis Daguerre 3) What does SLR (Single, Lens, Reflex) stand for and what year was this type of camera invented? 1949. 4) Who invented the first the mega-pixel sensor and what was the largest size picture? Kodak invented the mega-pixel sensor. Note: So stop and think about the history of film. From the mid 1800s till roughly when you were born all photography was on film. Now almost all photography is digital. Technology will have a dramatic impact on the future of photography. 5) Compare 4 parts of a Camera to the Human Eye a) Retina/Film captures the image and saves it b) Eyelid/Shutter: opens and closes the expose the film/retina to light c) Iris/Diaphragm: controls the size of the pupil/aperture D) Eyeball/Camera Body: prevents any extra light from entering (light tight). 6) Explain Depth of field. ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ 7) What is the aperture of a camera? _________________ ____________________________ 8) A camera with a small aperture would have an f stop of (f2.8) A camera with a large aperture would have an f stop of (f22) 9) Which f stop would provide a focus with only one part of the picture in focus? (f22) Note: When purchasing a digital or film camera be sure to check for the largest range of f stops to allow for varying depths of field. 10) What does the shutter control?______________________________________________ Page 2 11) The Shutter speed has a direct relation to?___________________________________ 12) When a subject or camera is moving you would need a _____________shutter speed.

Give an example different than the one provided for shutter speed______________ _______________________________________________________________________ 13) The exposure meter indicates what? The amount of light coming in. 14) Exposure is measured in lux seconds. 15) What is the f16 rule explain the f16 rule is to calculate the proper exposure without using the exposure meter. 16) Complete the following table using an ISO 125 film. Sunny Bright Cloudy Cloudy Very Cloudy

21) List 5 advantages and 5 disadvantages of digital Photography.

Advantages: -Cameras are extremely light -Memory cards are small and hold many images -Photos can be viewed immediately -You can edit image -Built in filters -Only print images you like Disadvantages: -Lose detail in black and white photos -Higher initial cost for cameras -memory cards are expensive

22) List 6 types of storage cards for digital cameras XD CARD, SD card

Smart media, memory stick, compact flash, macro drive. Note: Film cameras you take them in to a development facility and have them developed, you have a copy for many years to come. Digital camera you take a picture and view it on the camera, or a tv, computer screen, or phone screen. But if it is never printed what will happen in 10 to 20 years? If you do print your pictures on a colour printer, how long will that picture last compared to a professionally developed picture?
