PART I (Prof. Steinbrecher) URBAN ROADS 15 Points QUESTION 1 (4 Points)

A road network of a town like Oshakati is shown in the following sketch. There are 6 entrances/exits at the town border. In the center along the main road between intersection A and you find a shopping area.

An Origin-Destination-Survey was conducted. Counting was realized at all 6 entrances/exits. In the chart you see the result (vehicles per hour).

a) b)

Calculate the traffic volume at entrance/exit 4! Calculate the total through traffic volume in the shopping area (stretch between A and B)! Hypothesis: all drivers choose the shortest way. Intersection has traffic quality problems in the northern approach concerning right turning in direction shopping area. Therefore right turning will be forbidden in this approach. What will be the consequences? Calculate the difference of the through traffic volume in the shopping area!

QUESTION 2 (4 Points)
A new housing area with 80 plots and one access road is planned. It is to be expected that young families with middle income will buy plots to live in this new area. Mobility studies showed that people of this kind of families have a mobility rate of 3,5 trips per day. There is regular public transport on the main road, but the next bus stop is in a distance of 300 meters. Calculate the maximum hourly origin traffic volume in the afternoon, using fluctuation characteristics for housing areas shown below! Choose reasonable assumptions!

QUESTION 3 (2 Points)
List the four different types of pedestrian crossing facilities regarding the priority rules!

QUESTION 4 (5 Points)
In a Collector Road of Ongwediva the sewerage was completely renewed. This gives the possibility to redesign the road afterwards. The public space between the private plot boundaries is about 20 m. A traffic count showed that the traffic volume is 500 vehicles per hour with a rate of 2% heavy vehicles. There is no public transport on the road. The actual speed limit is 60 km/h. Design a cross section that fulfills in an optimal way the relevant requirements! You have to justify all chosen geometric elements and dimensions! Outline the cross section in a scale of 1:100 or 1:200!

PART II (Dr. Weber) TRANSPORT PLANNING & RURAL ROAD DESIGN 20 Points QUESTION 5
a) Please list the advantages and the disadvantages of straight sections. (2 Points) b) Please describe the model for the calculation of the overtaking sight distance and list all relevant parameters. (2 Points) c) Which are the general requirements for the design of intersections and how can these requirements be fulfilled? (4 Points) d) Please describe the model for the approaching sight distance. (2 Points) e) Please describe the model for the start-up sight distance. (2 Points) f) Two consecutive circular curves with Ri = 250m and R2 = 400m are given. Select the minimum and the maximum parameter for a symmetric consecutive transition curve. (4 Points) g) A consecutive circular curve with Ri = 300m and R2 = 390m is given. Select the minimum and the maximum parameter for an unsymmetrical consecutive transition curve. (4 Points)
