Sheriff's Charitable Foundation Selects Matthews Ministry as Charity Recipient

The Brunswick Sheriff's Charitable Foundation, Inc. has selected Matthew's Ministry to be the recipient of the proceeds from their 2nd annual charity ball to be held February 21, 2013. The foundation was established in 2012 and is dedicated to serve the people of Brunswick County by building permanent charitable capital to support programs and provide services that enhance the quality of life for all its citizens. In keeping with the mission of the foundation, the board chose Matthew's Ministry from numerous organizations located in Brunswick County who offer programs specifically benefiting only Brunswick County residents. Matthew's Ministry's mission is to eradicate childhood hunger in Brunswick County. This organization resulted from a teacher's prayer request in 2010 to a local "Moms in Touch" group asking them to, "Please pray for a child in my class that does not have food at home to eat." Kristie Disbrow, a local mom, after learning that there were many children who did not have food at home, took the initiative to establish Matthew's Ministry in December, 2010. Starting with just a few small donations, the program has grown by leaps and bounds giving food to needy students in Brunswick County schools. According to founder and executive director, Kristie Disbrow, "Each week we provide backpacks filled with food to children in Brunswick County who do not have adequate food at home." Teachers have noticed students participating in the program have less behavioral problems, have higher test scores and are happier. The foundation is proud to endorse and support such a vital program through its 2nd annual charity ball. This prestigious event, themed "Diamonds and Denim" featuring hors d' oeuvres, a buffet dinner, wine, beer, music by the Jim Quick & Coastline band, dancing, and a live auction will be held on February 21, 2013 at Stone Chimney place. Tickets are available for $80.00 each or two for $150.00, as well as sponsorship packages. For more information, guests can visit: www.sheriffscharity.com, call 910253-0922, or email sheriffscharity@gmail.com. The Foundation expresses its gratitude to all the supporters, volunteers, sponsors, and businesses that will make this event memorable and successful.

Gardening Tips for Those Who Think They Dont Have The Time But Would Love to Have a Beautiful Landscape
By Judy Koehly
Combine annuals, bulbs, perennials and shrubs; no one plant should have to do all of the work! Plant your beds with a backbone of perennials, shrubs and bulbs. These plants provide permanent color in your garden. Leave some open spaces which you can fill with annuals for all-summer color. Because perennials, shrubs and bulbs don't need to be planted each year spring planting takes less time. Weeding is another task that can be time consuming. Preventing weeds can greatly reduce your time commitment. When improving your soil, make sure to use weedfree compost, either bought or make certain your compost pile gets hot enough to kill weed seeds. Discard all vegetable seeds before adding veggie discards to the compost. Also pull weeds before they set seed to keep existing weeds from spawning more weeds. Plant your flowers close enough together that the mature leaves touch, keeping the sun from reaching the ground (so weeds cannot sprout). Using a two-inch thick layer of weed-seed free mulch around your plants will also prevent sun from reaching the soil. If sun doesn't shine on the soil, existing weed seeds won't germinate. An added Watering can be a minimal job if bonus of mulch is that it helps keep you water your landscapes less moisture from evaporating and often, but you must water more saves you from having to water as deeply and use available tools to make watering easier. Use good quality potting soil with liberal amendments of compost plus soil conditioner (finely ground pine bark). And do not forget to talk nicely to your plants, they do appreciate that extra attention. Use containers in your landscape to add height and color or to fill in a spot where a plant has died. You can also utilize houseplants outside. Tropical plants can come out into your garden or patio once the threat of frost is past. Here in Southeastern North Carolina many houseplants can thrive outdoors all year. I have had success adding spider plants, prayer plant, asparagus fern, annual dianthus, shrimp plant, angel trumpet and oxalis as perennials to my garden. Keep experimenting and trying new plants to see what works best (with less work) to your own garden paradise! Dosher Receives National Award for Emergency Care Excellence

Dosher Memorial Hospital was chosen from more than 1,900 hospitals nationwide to receive the 2012 TSystem Client Excellence Award for Rapid Process Improvement with an Emergency Department Information System (EDIS). T-System, Inc., the industry leader in clinical, business and IT solutions for emergency care, annually recognizes hospital and primary and urgent care clinic partners most effectively improving the quality of patient care and satisfaction, community health leadership, operational processes and financial results. Dosher's Emergency Department converted to T-System's Electronic Health Record (EHR) system in April 2011. Changes in federal and insurance regulations, multiple patient safety requirements and the need for physicians to adopt computerized physician order entry (CPOE) were behind the hospital's decision to upgrade to electronic documentation. "Receiving the T-System Client Excellence Award speaks to the level of quality care our dedicated clinicians and staff provide daily in putting patients first at all times," said Joann Turzer-Commesso, RN, director of emergency services at Dosher. "Electronic charting is an invaluable asset for timely patient care as well as meeting regulatory needs." In recognition of Dosher Hospital's 2012 accomplishment, T-System made a $500 donation to the Dosher Memorial Hospital Foundation on behalf of the hospital. Dosher also received a commemorative plaque and will receive special recognition at the 2013 T-System linkED Emergency Care Conference next April in Dallas. "We congratulate Dosher Memorial Hospital for being chosen as a 2012 T-System Client Excellence Award recipient in using T-System solutions to improve their entire ED care management operation," said Sunny Sanyal, T-System's chief executive officer. "This award clearly highlights the proficiency of these dedicated healthcare professionals in aggressively employing state-of-the-art information technology to vastly improve the lives of patients in their community."

There were approx. 250 people in attendance. The colors were presented by the JROTC of the South Brunswick High School. The Master of Ceremonies was Mr. Lee Norris and the National Anthem was sung by Jane Izod. St. James mayor, Bob Morrow made some opening remarks and then the podium was turned over to the key note speaker, retired, Army Brigadier General, Don Parker, a St James resident. After the colors were retired light refreshments were served inside the Community Center. Over the past months a quilt was made by ladies of St. James, raffle tickets were sold and a winner was selected while refreshments were being served. The sum of $1,098.00 was raised and will be donated to the "Operation At Ease" program which sponsors recreation weekends for military families.
