Om is a word that affirms a Divine Presence, or you could say it stands for all reality or creation. It is believed to have a strong effect on the body and mind of the person chanting it and his environment. Most mantras start with Om but it can be used alone. It is pronounced with three sounds: ahhhh, ooooh, mmmmm. The mmmmm needs to be extended just like the other sounds. The three sounds need to blend as one long, continuous sound. It starts in the throat, goes through the mouth and ends as your lips close. Mantras can be one word or several. They are sometimes specific to the person, like when a teacher or guru gives a student his own mantra. They are useful for just about anything: protection, health, money, success, or happiness.
