Summer was designed to give kids a break from school and help them try new experiences and grow mentally, physically and socially. Whether your child wants to refine a sports skill, get creative, be in a play, learn magic, play classic and electronic games or explore the great outdoors, Arlington has something to offer. Classic Camps (page 5) offer a variety of programming options, both structured and unstructured, that include art, sports, trips and more. Overnight Camps (page 6) are a combo of a classic camp, nature/adventure camp and sleepover. Nature, Adventure or History Camps (page 6) are for kids who love the outdoors and want to learn about and enjoy natureand maybe stretch their limits with challenges such as canoeing, caving and more. Creative Arts Camps (page 8) come in every shape and size, for those who want to learn to paint a picture, act in a play, throw a pot, sing a song and more! Sports Camps (page 9) are available for the sports enthusiast who enjoys every sport in a sport combo camp, or for the camper who wants to learn or refine skills in a specific sport camp such as basketball or tennis. Camps for Individuals with Disabilities (page 13) are camps specifically designed for individuals with physical, emotional, social or cognitive/mental challenges. Imagination Exploration Camps (page 16) bring kids with special interests in science, magic, history and imagination strategy games together. Community Center Based Camps (page 7) are programs for children ages 5-11, designed to give families lots of flexibility, including an option for students attending summer school!

DPR established the Summer FUNd in 2004 to cover registration and field trip fees for children who could otherwise not participate due to financial hardship. Please help us ensure that all children in Arlington have a fun, engaging and asset-building summer. Contribute to a childs summer adventures by donating during the registration process or on the Arlington County Camp Registration Form.

Camp and playground counselors are special people. Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) staff must love working with young people. They are creative, enthusiastic, committed and sincere...plus super-patient and loads of fun! In fact, many of Arlingtons camp and playground counselors have been campers themselves, often in the programs they now direct. A lot of our committed staff are schoolteachers, college students, and college graduates who hope to find a permanent job working with kids. Theyre a talented and fun bunch, each with loads of experience in his or her specialty area, and all committed to helping your child to be the best he or she can be. To ensure your children have a positive and fun experience, Arlington County invests many hours in staff training and development. In addition to meeting the qualifications for their position, all summer staff attends mandatory training that focuses on promoting positive participation; creative expression; cooperative and adaptive games; heart-healthy and wellness activities; risk management and safety; child protective services; procedures and policies; planning activities; positive and productive scheduling; and developing welcoming spaces.

Arlington Camps for All Abilities

As part of our inclusion philosophy, youth with disabilities are welcome to register for programs of interest. We have designated Madison and Fairlington Tot camps; and Jamestown Elementary Summerfest as sites that receive additional services. These sites have a lower camp maximum, lower staff to camper ratio and additional training for staff on program modifications, behavior management and inclusion of individuals with disabilities. Also check our TR Camps on pages 13-14. Please note, your child can attend any camp of interest. Trained Therapeutic Recreation (TR) staff can assist you in making sure your child has the right support and accommodations to ensure that they have a safe and successful experience at camp. Reasonable accommodations could include: adapted equipment and techniques, specialized staff training, sign language interpreters, accessible facilities, additional staff, or large print and Braille materials. Please request accommodations at least two weeks in advance. It may be necessary to change a campers placement if the support, assistance and accommodation necessary for participation can best be provided at an alternate site. Contact the TR Office at trinfo@arlingtonva.us, 703-228-4740 for more information.

Camp Facts 101

Everyone can have a great time this summer, but not at anothers expense. All participants must follow directions and be respectful of fellow campers, staff, property, and program boundaries. While each camp has specific policies for each session, there are common policies among all Arlington camps. These policies were developed to be sure all kids are safe and have the best opportunity for an enriching and fun summer. 1. Children must wear appropriate clothing and shoes for the camp and its activities. Sandals are not allowed except on water days. Children must bring their lunch to full day camps. Caregivers should pick up a calendar of activities on the first day of each camp session on site. Excess group insurance that is above and beyond personal medical insurance is available to camp participants to cover medical expenses incurred as a result of injusry at camp. Behavior resulting in extreme disruption or intentional harm to self, others or property can result in removal from the program according to the Code of Conduct Policy at the discretion of program staff. Camp and playground counselors are trained to use supportive strategies and available resources to encourage positive participation as alternatives to removal. Locations are subject to change (this catalog conveys the most correct information available before going to press). For updates, contact the registration office at 703-228-4747 or log on to www.arlingtonva.us, search summer camp. The Arlington County Board approves all Arlington County camp fees. The goal is to provide programs for all County children. You may qualify for reduced fees even in non-DPR camps. Call the Registration Office for more information 703-228-4747. Camps with insufficient enrollment will be canceled. Registration staff will help direct families to comparable open programs. To keep kids safe, summer programs will limit or cancel outdoor activities, or may even cancel programs, on Code Red days. Camper safety is the deciding factor.

Every camper in DPR summer camps benefit from a healthy and active lifestyle. Regular physical activity controls weight, combats chronic health conditions and diseases, improves mood, boosts energy, and promotes better sleep. Our recreation programs strive to provide an opportunity for each camper to get the exercise they need to sustain a healthy life. We integrate at least 45 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise into DPR summer camps through interactive sports and games run by our staff. It is our goal to provide an environment where campers are able to increase their aerobic capacity, muscular strength, and overall physical fitness through fun and challenging activities. In order to provide safe opportunities for physical activity, it is imperative that your camper wear tennis shoes that fit properly. Laces or Velcro must be tied snuggly on the campers foot. Loose shoes or Heelys are not ideal for physical activities. Socks should also be worn. Campers wearing inappropriate footwear will be unable to fully participate for their own safety. DPR Staff will consult with a parent when improper footwear is worn.

Arlington County maintains a philosophy of inclusion whereby individuals with disabilities are welcome to register for any camp. We offer different levels of support to help meet the needs of each individual. For maximum support, please check out the camps on page 13 and 14. We have additionally designated Madison and Fairlington Tot camps and Jamestown Summerfest as designated inclusion sites listed on page 6, and there are many other options for inclusion throughout the catalog. Everyone who receives support through the Therapeutic Recreation office (for inclusion or TR camps) will be sent an Accommodation Packet that will help TR plan a successful experience for each camper. Call the TR Office at 703-228-4731 or email TRInfo@arlingtonva.us if you need recommendations on camps for your child. Note: the TR Office reserves the right to reassign campers if staff determines that he or she would be served more effectively in another program.

f you are 13 or older, please join hundreds of other energetic and committed Arlingtonians and have fun while contributing your talents to the community. We need your support to assist staff with general interest, special interest and Therapeutic Recreation camps (volunteers are placed only at camps operated by the Department of Parks and Recreation, not in contracted camps). Volunteers take a leadership role with the support of trained staff in all the fun and exciting activities campers enjoy, including field trips, arts and crafts, swimming, singalongs, games and much more! Whether you are seeking a personal or professional development opportunity or simply have a desire to work with young people, volunteering can be extremely rewarding. It is an opportunity to make friends, work with children in a supervised recreational setting and gain valuable experience in a leadership role. In order to be eligible for a paid Student Assistant position in Arlington County camps in the future, you must have been a volunteer for at least one summer. The number of Student Assistant positions is limited, but DPR will not hire anyone who has not been a summer camp volunteer.
