Annotated Bibliography Primary Sources:

Edgar. Letter to Edgars mom. 17 December 1863 This is a letter from a soldier to his mother, and he tells her about his experiences in the battle. I learned that at night they would find the rebels trying to leave their position, so they cut them off and would drive him back. This source is useful to me because I learned about what happened in the battle from a person who experienced it. Lee, Robert, E. General Lees letter to his wife. 12 July 1863 This is a letter from General Robert E. Lee to his wife. He had explained his failure and what was going on at the time in the war. I learned that they failed to drive away the enemy in Pickett Charge, and that his army withdrew. This source was very useful to me because I was able to use most of this information in the letter on my website. Lincoln, Abraham. The Gettysburg Address. Gettysburg, PA. 19 November 1863 This is the famous Gettysburg Address speech given by President Lincoln at the Dedication of the National Soldiers Cemetery. I learned that the Gettysburg Address was the message that President Lincoln was trying to get out to the United States. I also learned that President Lincoln wanted us to become a United States again and not to be separated as the Confederacy or the Union. This source was the most useful to me and I used the information from this source to help me out with my website. Longstreet, James. Letter to Jefferson Davis. 29 January 1876 This is a letter from General Longstreet to Jefferson Davis. I learned that General Longstreet was opposed to the policy of attacking the Union army at the cemetery because General Lee overpowered him. I also learned that other confederates were late to the scene. This source is useful to me because I learned new things from someone who actually experienced the battle. Pickett, George. Letter from George Pickett. 3 July 1863 This source is a letter from General Pickett, and it doesnt mention who the letter is to. I learned that General Pickett rode along with his infantry around 8 oclock. I also learned that they were often told to lie down and not attract attention. This source is useful to me because I learned new things about my project from a General in the Battle of Gettysburg.

Robertson, John, H. Interview by Federal Writers Project. Personal Interview This is an interview of a soldier that survived the Battle of Gettysburg. I learned that Prisoners that were taken by the Union army were put on an island called Fort Delaware. I also learned that the prisoners grew crops in the fields for the Union soldiers. This source was useful to me because I learned what happened in the battle from someone who experienced it. Samuel, Russel. Letter to Captain Russells mom. 12 July 1863 This is a letter written my Captain Samuel Russel, this letter was to his mother and he explains what has happened since he wrote his last letter. I learned that on the second day of the battle they were opened on several times by the rebel artillery and sharpshooters. I also learned that on that same day they had captured 8,000 soldiers along with General Longstreet. This source is useful to me because I leaned valuable information on my project and I used some of this information on my project guide. Stacey, Manley. Letter from Manley Stacey. 3 July 1863 This is a letter from Manley Stacey, but it does not say who it is to. It gives lots of information on the battle. I learned that they were given orders to march in line on the front to the battle on their left, and they had lots of confusion while the rebels were firing at them. This source is useful to me because I learned new things about the battle and I used some of the information on my project.

I learned that before the battle the Confederacy was winning the Civil War. I also learned that the battle was recognized for its turning point for the Union in the Civil War. This source was useful to me because I learned new things and most of the information helped me on my project guide.

This is a website that had a section on the Battle of Gettysburg and it has tons of Information in it. I learned that in Pickett's Charge the Union soldiers dug into Cemetery Ridge a mile away from the enemy to prepare for the oncoming attack. I also learned that around 1:45 P.M. the confederates began their charge towards the Union. This source is useful to me because I learned new things about my project, and I used this information on my website. "Battle of Gettysburg Facts." This is a website that has a lot of facts on the Battle of Gettysburg. It has lots of sections and it tells of the importance of the battle. I learned that the Union had won and had stopped the Confederacy from invading the North, and becoming an independent country. I also learned that the battle had the most deaths in the Civil War. This was useful to me because I learned a lot of new things about the battle from this website, and I used this information on my website. "Battle of Gettysburg." The History Place. This is a website that explained the strategies that they used, and it gave dates and times that certain events that happened. I learned that on the first day of the battle Meade arrived with 100,000 men to strengthen his defensive position. I also learned that about 10 A.M. General Longstreet was slow and didn't get into position to attack at 4 P.M. It was useful to me because it provided a lot of information about my project in it. "Battle of Gettysburg." I learned that on the second day of the battle 75,000 soldiers were lined up along Seminary Ridge. This source is useful to me because I found valuable information that helped me with my website.

This is a website about the Battle of Gettysburg. I learned that on the second day of the battle there was a fight at little round top. I also learned that the Union won the battle of Gettysburg. This source was very useful to me because I learned what happened on the second day of the battle. Elder, Donald. Interview by Michael Shaughnessoy. Personal interview. 13 July 2010. This is an interview with a man Donald Elder, he is a professor, and he was interviewed by Michael Shaughnessoy. I learned that if the Confederates won the battle, they would gain their independence, and be called the Confederate States of America. This source was useful to me because it helped me a lot on my project. Fritz, Jean, and Charles Robinson. Just a few words, Mr. Lincoln: the story of the Gettysburg Address. I learned that Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address, and that it was ten sentences long and 271 words. This was useful to me because it helped me get off to a great start on my project. This is a website about the Battle of Gettysburg giving information about what happened in the three days of the battle. I learned that early on the second day of the battle Meade's army dug along cemetery ridge while Lee's army was getting into attack position. This source is me asking my grandfather about my topic. I learned that he visited the Battle of Gettysburg Park. I also learned that there were graves all over the place and that Little Round Top was a big hill and it was covered with rocks and trees. This is an interview of Tim Smith, and he was interviewed by an organization called Civil War Trust. I learned that the Battle started because the Union and the Confederate roads met at this location. This source was useful to me because I learned new information about my project and it helped me. I learned that after the battle the dead covered the battlefield, along with dead horses, and shattered cannons. It was divided into four sections, and it explains of the strategies that both sides used. I learned that Lee began his retreat on July 4th. Over 172,000 men and 634 cannons were in this battle, I also learned that 569 tons of ammunition was used. This source was useful to me because it gave me usable information.

This is a website that has a lot of information about the Gettysburg Address. I learned that during the first three days of July 1863, was one of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War. I had learned that the strategy in Pickett's Charge had worked in other battles, and this was the first time that it had failed.
