Description: This course is the first of four theory/skills courses offered as part of the music program. Its principal focus is music theory; the fundamentals of tonal music including notational proficiency, harmonic analysis, and four part SATB voice leading. It also emphasizes aural skills (singing and dictation) and the development of keyboard skills. The theory component will cover chapters 1-10 of the Benward text. Weekly assignments will be given, collected and graded. Each assignment must be handed in at the beginning of the class during which it is due. Assignments that are handed in 1-2 days late will be marked down 5%. Assignments that are 3 or more days late will be given a grade of zero. The aural skills component will consist of: o Singing: both group and individual performances of melodies and rhythms. o Dictation: intervals, chords, scales, rhythmic exercises and single line melodies The keyboard skills component requires that students learn and perform scales up to 4 sharps and 4 flats, and select chord progressions, to be tested through the term as per the schedule. There will be limited in-class time dedicated to these skills elements. Students are expected to practice them on their own outside of class. There are practice rooms available. Attendance is required. There will be NO MAKEUP QUIZZES OR TESTS for scheduled in-class tests or for missed group work. LEARN is an important class resource. Here you will find instructions about weekly course content, text readings, assignments, quizzes, tests and exams, as well as handouts and other materials. The content will expand as the course proceeds. You must check it regularly. Required Texts: o Bruce Benward, Music in Theory and Practice (Vol. I, Text and Workbook, 8th ed.) o Robert W.
