Added section 6.11.1 referencing Federal Specification GGG-C-105C, and renumbered old sections from 6.11.1 on by adding one to their section number. Added section 6.11.1.7 , to post the results of calibration to indicate that micrometers & calipers are in calibration. Renumbered section 6.11.1.7 as 6.11.1.8, and added new section 6.11.1.7 requiring gage condition be recorded in calibration records. Added requirement to enter a yes or no to indicate that the gage meets specification in section 6.11.1.7 Page No. n/a 1 2 2 2 Initials

* Denotes Key Process Variables/Control Points 6.11. Quarterly Calibrations for Micrometers and Calipers NOTE:Each quarter, all micrometers and calipers in use are calibrated using Webber Cold Test Blocks produced by Starrett Inc.. These test blocks are sent to Starrett annually and certified for accuracy. The certificates of authenticity are on file in the Lab Supervisors office and can be found in the "Current Calibration Certificates" logbook. Each micrometer and each caliper is identified and listed in the logbook along with the tolerances allowable under ASTM guidelines. These quarterly checks are performed either by the Stainless Met. Technician or the Mechanical Lab Supervisor. 6.11.1 Reference document for the calibration procedure is Federal Specification GGG-C-105C: "Caliper, Micrometer, (Inside, Outside, Tube) and Gage, Micrometer. The calibration procedure outlined complies with the requirements of the previously mentioned specification. 6.11.2. Cold test blocks are run on each set of micrometers, without any adjustment to achieve an initial reading. 6.11.2.1. Each initial reading is recorded and the micrometers are then turned to the zero point and adjusted to zero. 6.11.2.2. Each adjustment is recorded on the Quarterly calibrations sheet in the "Adjustment" column. 6.11.2.3. Examine the ID jaws of each caliper for damage. Calipers with damaged ID jaws are to be removed from service and any questionable test results are to be addressed by following steps outlined in section 2.2.2 of ASFR-4.11-01 6.11.2.4 Use calibrated gage blocks to set a calibrated micrometer to the measurements of 0.250", 0.500", and 1.000". Check the ID jaws of the calipers

against the preset micrometer (Take 3 readings at each setting.) Check the OD jaws of the calipers against the gage blocks used to set the micrometer. Compare the ID jaw measurements to the OD jaw measurements, and record the data. To pass, the average of the measurements with the ID jaws of the calipers of the calipers and the average of the measurements with the OD jaws of the calipers must be within 0.002" of each other, and the range the individual measurements of both the ID jaws and the OD jaws of the caliper cannot be more than 0.002". 6.11.3. After the micrometers and calipers have been adjusted to zero, each cold block is run (3) three times and the readings are recorded on the quarterly calibrations sheet. 6.11.4. The (3) three readings are then averaged and listed on the quarterly calibration sheets. 6.11.5. The readings are then entered into the computer and dated, with the performers name in the "Done By" column. 6.1.1.6. Initial and final readings consist of 3 individual measurements. These individual measurements are recorded in the Quarterly Calibrations spreadsheet. However, the measurements shown on the printout of the spreadsheet are the average of these 3 readings for both initial and final calibration measurements. 6.1.1.7. In addition to the as-found and as-left gage readings, the person performing the calibration will note the as found gage condition on the Quarterly Calibrations spreadsheet, and will indicate whether the as left gage conforms to specification by entering a yes or a no in the appropriate column. 6.1.1.8. The results of the quarterly calibrations will be posted at each of the tensile testing labs and in the sample preparation area to demonstrate that the measuring instruments in use are in calibration.
