Handling an overhead gantry. New Baldwin motorway bridge, Saybrook, Connecticut/USA. Joint-venture PERINI / PCL / C & G. 2 hydraulic TIRAK T-3000 hoists.

The new 770 m Baldwin motorway bridge over the Connecticut river at Saybrook and Old Lyne has been built using a new method of post-tensioned pre-cast segmental concrete. The system used an overhead gantry to transport and position the prefabricated segmental concrete sections amongst the heaviest and widest ever used for balanced cantilever construction. The 2 hydraulic TIRAK T-3000 hoists were used for handling the overhead gantry. These large 3 tonne capacity hoists operated in both directions for achieving the necessary to-and-fro movements to position the segments. The pulling effort was checked by 2 DYNAFOR load indicators with remote display mounted in the crane cabin. The 2 post-tensioning platforms were lifted and lowered by 2x2 TIRAK T-1000 machines reeved on 4 parts of wire rope (photo PA556.2).

Positioning and pre-stressing prefabricated bridge sections. Site: Viaduct over the river Recht, for the Verviers to Prm motorway, Belgium. General contractor: Travaux S.A. Prestressing technique: Laboratoire de Cinmatique (Freyssinet subsidiary company). Equipment: 2 special pre-stressing platforms, 2000 kg capacity, each fitted with 2 hydraulic TIRFOR TU-32H machines, mounted in a multiple sheave system, and 2 prestressing rams. Description of application: The platforms are freely suspended from and are able to traverse along the construction beam. They are used for: a) Transporting the personnel and materials to the working position during the positioning and pre-stressing of the prefabricated bridge sections (weight: 54 tonnes). These are transported and positioned using the guyed construction beam; total length 94 m. b) Positioning the pre-stressing rams (weight: 350 kg) using a chain hoist which traverses along a fixed jib on the platform.

The installation of prestressing ropes takes place at the upper level whereas the tensioning takes place at the lower level of the platform. The platform move along the rigs. They are manoeuvred by two reeved TIRFOR TU-32H and fitted with a suspension beams' system and with chain hoists for handling the tensioning jack (500 kg).

Description of application: Problem: The work consists in tensioning the prestressing wire ropes on the inner part, cutting the extra length of the ropes and injecting a protective cement to prevent corrosion. Each part is fitted with 3 ribs. Inner part: height 22.30 m, diam. 75.80 m. Outer part: height 14 m, diam. 85.80 m. Solution: The contractor has used the same platforms as for the Nuclear Plant in Thiange (se M-237). They had been previously mended and modified for this new application. The platforms are suspended to special suspension system. They move in tandem along the ribs. They have three functions: lifting personnel and material up to the working position; operating on the left and right of each rib for the placement of the prestressing ropes and tensioning jacks; handling the tensioning jacks (weight 750 kg) by means of an electric trolley which moves along a mobile beam. A metallic frame construction is needed to support the beam, which is an integral part of the platform.

Application: Prestressing work (Freyssinet system) on a gas reservoir. Site: ENFERSA factory, Cartagena S.A./Spain. Contractor: AGROMAN, Empresa Constructora S.A. Equipment: 3 x 10 m prestressing platforms, capacity 3000 kg, each fitted with 3 hydraulic TIRFOR TU-16H machines, controlled from a power pack, 3 BLOCSTOP safety devices and 6 x 40 m wire ropes. 9 stirrups suspended from trollies to allow movement of the platforms. 3 hoists for manoeuvring the prestressing jacks. Description of application: It was necessary to prestress the concrete safety ring which circled the metal reservoir. The 3 platforms allowed the work to continue simultaneously on the 3 seams for fitting and tensioning the horizontal wire ropes. For work on the ledge, the platforms had to be slightly reversed using the trollies on the suspension stirrups.

DYWIDAG. Only one mobile beam is used for handling the tensioning jack giving access to the wire ropes, either on the right or left rig. This suspension beam is moved manually along two rails and is telescopic so that accurate positioning of the jack is possible. The platforms are fixed to the suspension brackets which are anchored at the top of the silo.

The silos are 76 m high. After the tensioning, the extra lengths of the ropes have to be cut, and to prevent corrosion, a protective cement is injected. Solution: The use of 4 supporting platforms equipped with 4 PA101.8 motorised TIRFORs which move up and down 4 ribs outside the silo wall. These platforms have 2 functions: a) lifting personel and material up to the working level where they can operate simultaneously on the left and on the right of each rib for the placement of the prestressing ropes and tensioning jacks, b) handling the tensioning jacks by means of 2 chain-blocks (250 kg capacity) which are suspended from a trolley running on a I-beam. A metallic frame construction is needed to support the I-beam, which is an integral part of the platform.
