LAJITASBig Bend Ranch State Park, located in the remote mountain country of far Southwest Texas, is set to host the third-annual Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest, a challenging threeday mountain bike ride Feb. 14-16, at what many consider to be the up-andcoming premier mountain biking destination in the Southwestern U.S. Bike Fest 2013, which is co-sponsored by Terlingua-based outfitter Desert Sports, will again feature three full
days of guided rides through rugged, exigent desert terrain at the 300,000acre plus state park, Big Bend National Park, and on the Lajitas Trail system. Numerous guided and unguided ride opportunities are scheduled each of the three days, led by veteran riders from Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept. and Desert Sports/Big Bend Trails Alliance. All Groundhogs look alike, however. They are 20 inches long and can weigh anywhere from 12 to 15 pounds. Our friend, Phil, however, weighs a hefty 20 pounds and is longer than your average groundhog at 22 inches. Most of them are covered with coarse grayish hairs, tipped with brown, or sometimes red. They have short ears, a short tail, short legs, and are very quick movers. They have exceptionally strong jaws. Groundhogs eat mostly greens, fruits and vegetables, but dont drink a lot of water, getting their moisture from dewy leaves. Groundhogs can whistle when they are alarmed, they can also whistle in the Spring, when they are courting. Phil is also long-living, being able to survive for seven more years due to a special liquid which he is fed by members of his elite club. There is only one Punxsutawney Phil, however. He has been used for offering support of political events, to rooting for area sports teams, to having a movie made of him that starred Bill Murray, and many other events to which he has lent his famous name and presence. Todays celebration which honors Phil on Feb. 2 each year attracts tens of thousands of fans from all over the world. They are as excited about viewing Phils emerging from his underground lair, as they are in viewing their favorite rock stars. The first observance of Phil is credited with a newspaper called the Punxsutawney Spirit who first recorded the appearance of the famous rodent. Throughout the years, Phil has been part and parcel of some famous events, including: *During Prohibition, Phil threatened to impose 60 more weeks of winter if he wasnt allowed a drink; *In 1958, Phil announced that it was a United States Chucknik rather than a Soviet Sputnik that circled the earth for the first time *In1981, Phil wore a yellow ribbon in honor of the American hostages in Iran; *Phil travelled to Washington D.C. in 1986 to meet with President Ronald Reagan; *Phil appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 1995; *In 2001, Phils prediction was shown live on the JumboTron at Times Square in New York City. Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell attended the ceremonies, becoming the first governor to ever do so.
weeks of winter? Or are we going to be blessed with the beginning of Spring? Dont look to your favorite weather person, look instead to Punxsutawney Phil, your favorite rodent-like creature who has been emerging from his cubbyhole underneath the earth since 1886 when the tradition began in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Punxsutawney Phil then became even more famous than even the most famous weathermen. Including Al Roker of the Today Show. The main difference is that Phil doesnt need a ton of maps and other weather devices, he simply emerges from his
hole, and, legend has it that if he sees his shadow six more weeks of frigid weather will prevail. If, however, the day is cloudy and overcast and if Phil doesnt see his shadow, Spring is just around the corner. But, lest you think that our Phil is the only groundhog who predicts the weather, youre sadly mistaken. There is also Dunkirk Dave, Shubenacadle Sam, Wharton Willie, General Beauregard Lee, Peewee the Woodchuck and Staten Island Chuck. Oh, and lets not forget Balzac Billy, also known as the Prairie Prognosticator a young upstart who hails from Alberta, Canada.
Gov. Perry: We Must Continue Working to Make Abortion a Thing of the Past
AUSTIN - Gov. Rick Perry today gave the keynote address at the annual Texas Alliance for Life Rally, highlighting his proposals for the 83rd Legislative Session to strengthen Texas' protections on life. "As supporters of life, Texas will continue to take the necessary steps to protect unborn children who are capable of feeling pain, in hopes of one day making abortion at any stage a thing of the past," Gov. Perry said. "Unfortunately abortion is the second most common surgical procedure in America, so our work to protect life is far from over. Together we will continue working to strengthen Texas' protections on life and protect the health of both women and their unborn children." Gov. Perry continues to be a strong advocate for protecting innocent life, calling on the Legislature to pass measures to ban abortions once a baby can feel pain, and strengthen standards of care for women seeking abortions, including requiring physicians who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a hospital, and requiring abortion clinics to meet the same standards as ambulatory surgical centers. He has also signed both parental notification and parental consent laws...Continues on next page

I grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago and consider myself battle tested when it comes to cold weather and wind chills in the negative numbers. I remember as a teenager shoveling 10 inches of snow off garage roofs and enduring wind chills of minus 69 degrees. But two years ago here in town, I was reminded of my childhood days. It began Tuesday, February 1, when the temperature began to fall following an arctic cold front. We had just enough moisture advect into the area with enough cold air that snow began to fall. Following the snow, the streets began to get icy and the winds began to gust over 40 mph; wind chills began to drop it felt like the single digits. The TXDOT traffic cameras showed cars spinning out on the ice that night and vehicles struggling to advance up any hill. This was just the beginning of what would turn out to be a prolonged time period of intense cold air, water lines freezing, rolling power outages and frustrations from a city unprepared for weather we havent felt in nearly 50 years. Here are some of the memorable details of the storm:
Wednesday, February 2: Record El Paso low temperature that morning of 7 degrees High temp was 15 degrees a record cold high temperature Snows comes to an end midday -NE El Paso gets the brunt of the snow 6 -West side of town gets around 1 on average -Alamogordo digs out of 10 -Cloudcroft picks up 13 -Ruidoso gets 14 -Deming records 2 -Dell City comes in with 2.5 Thursday, February 3: Another record low of 0 degrees (record low in El Paso was -8 degrees on January 8, 1962) Wind Chill: -17 degrees in El Paso (record is -22 in 1962) 18 degrees was our high temp Alamogordo: -13 Cloudcroft: -20 Ruidoso: - 13 Deming: - 0 T or C: -6 Santa Teresa: -5 Friday, February 4: Record low again of 3 degrees High temperature of 37 degrees

Making a little space mean a lot: unused computer room now welcomes overnight guests.
Photo: John Ellis
Q: What to do with a really small room? I mean teeny-tiny, maybe just wide enough to wedge in a double bed. We need a guest room, but would any guest feel welcome in such a stingy little bedroom? A: If not, you should make better friends. As long as they can stretch out well enough to sleep in a space that's warm and welcoming, what more does any guest really need?
Here's an inspiring case in point: Dena Fishbein, top-shelf designer and author of "The Painted House, "and her husband Dan Fishbein used to handle their thriving design business via computers installed in this sliver of a room. Then they both got laptops, Deana writes, leaving the space underemployed. They decided to turn it into a guest room, even if there was just a quarter-inch to spare when they moved the bed in. However, no one loses sleep over the tight fit thanks to Dena's famously freehanded approach to mixing exuberant colors and patterns. The high canopy matches the pillows, which match the bed skirt, which is echoed in the throw and stenciled decorations that pack such an enormous punch of personality into the Lilliputian room. Also, please note: guests' basic comfort needs are provided for. There are light-controlling curtains at the windows, a handy table at bedside and an efficient reading lamp, all de rigueur in any guest room, however large or small. This is creative re-purposing at its best. As Dena believes, "Part of what gives a house its vitality is its evolution. If your home grows and changes with you, if it reflects both where you are and where you've been, it will better suit where you're going."

SWEET SKIN CARE. I have a great home recipe for exfoliant that uses what I have in my pantry. I mix equal amounts of honey and cornmeal, and apply to my face, elbows and heels. It leaves my skin feeling wonderful, and it smells nice, too. Lee, email RUBBER BAND GRIP. Instead of using those rubbery disks to open jars, I simply put a rubber band or two around the lid and twist! It provides a great grip, and it's much handier than keeping one more thing in your kitchen that only serves one purpose. Mara, Michigan GRINDING THE GROUNDS. I don't purchase whole peppercorns for use in a grinder, I just fill my grinder full of regular ground black pepper. The grinds are big enough that when it's ground again, I get a fresh ground pepper taste at a fraction of the cost. It lasts a lot longer than those tiny bottles of peppercorns. Jennifer, email WRAP UP A BOUQUET GARNI. If you make soup, a bouquet garni (spices and herbs tied into a little bundle) is a wonderful thing. But instead of buying cheesecloth for this process, I wrap the herbs and spices in a coffee filter, roll it or fold it, and wrap it with string. I drop it in the soup pot and fish it out easily with a spoon when the soup is done. Jessica, email FOIL SCRUBBER. One morning, I faced a tough job cleaning
the dried-on pancake batter in a bowl. Instead of reaching for a scrub pad, I balled up a piece of used aluminum foil, and it worked perfectly to scrub the bowl clean. Brenda, Michigan
That's right; I was committing to a fun-in-the-sun week without going on the Internet or checking email, something the average person does about 60 times a day. You calling me average? Digital detox is a growth industry. There are
detox nights at bars, weekly detox camps, even detox cruises. The idea is so 2013. You disconnect from technology, face the addiction and, for a price, get coaching about effective strategies for finding balance. My strategy was simple. I would lock up my MacBook Air and iPhone in the hotel safe and resist their gravitational pull until it was time to fly back to reality. No Facebook, no Twitter, no cloud, no apps, no texting, no smarter-than-Iam phone. My hotel space I can't honestly call it a room didn't even have a TV. Where do you go when you can't go online? Could I survive? And if I did, would life be worth living? It was also my first visit to Jade Mountain, a unique collection of 24 exquisitely designed private sanctuaries overlooking the 82-degree Caribbean Sea. It's ranked as one of the finest and most luxurious hotels in the world. I got a great deal. Be happy for me.

Why? Peeking out through the bottom of my straw, I saw more than 30 paddle boarders during my arduous week on St. Lucia, and not one of them smiled. Ever. Paddle boarding may be going the way of snowboarding. Yes, it is physically possible to stand on a modified surfboard and push yourself around the sea, but why would you?
But back to Jade Mountain, where each sanctuary has its own infinity pool with a builtin system of light therapy based on ancient ayurvedic beliefs about the healing power of color. Blue, for example, is good for toxic cleansing and helps bring on physical and mental calmness; red stimulates creativity and helps activate your blood flow. At least that's the theory. I can't tell you for sure that it works, but after a week of focused relaxation in my infinity pool, my liver sent me a huge orchid plant and a new Vitamix juicer. Each Jade Mountain sanctuary comes with three walls. What does that mean? It means your private space is completely open to the outside. There is no fourth wall just like Bertolt Brecht's plays. But no one can see in. You can float naked into boundless nature. You are drawn to the 3-D view of two mountain peaks, called the Pitons, which are iconic symbols of the island and available

By Dr. Marty Becker and Gina Spadafori Universal Uclick If youre trying to save money and really, who isnt? its important to understand a couple of key concepts when it comes to budgeting for pet care: 1. Its almost always less expensive to prevent health problems than to treat them. 2. Taking your pets health care expert your vet-
Take the weight off your pet. Extra pounds increase the likelihood of serious health problems, such as arthritis, diabetes and cancer in pets just as they do in people. And yet few people recognize when their pet is overweight or even grossly obese! If your pet is normal weight (you should be able to feel his ribs), measuring food,
keeping treats to a minimum and working in a daily exercise session will keep him that way. If your pet is overweight, get your veterinarians help to reduce weight slowly to avoid the health risks of sudden weight loss, especially in cats.

and chocolate to houseplants such as lilies, many poisoning risks can be prevented just by removing them. Both over-the-counter and prescription medications are also a danger, and these are best dealt with by putting them behind cupboard doors. Dont be shy about asking your veterinarian to work with you on keeping costs down. For example, ask your veterinarian to give you prescriptions for medications to be filled elsewhere or to match prices. Comparison shopping for medications may offer considerable savings, especially if there are generic equivalents available. We also recommend looking into pet health insurance, because no pet lover wants to say no to a pet who can be saved because the money isnt there for the care. Because plans differ, do your research before buying to make sure the most likely health problems of your pet are covered. Talk to your veterinarian, and youll get even more good advice.
Novel Idea?
Q: OK, I am finally going to sit down and write a book about my travels in the
Far East after college 15 years ago. To make it "official," I am turning a small guest room into my writing room. My husband is offering to paint it "something inspirational." I love bright colors, but would that be distracting in the long run?
A: Congratulations on taking the first step toward your book ambitions. As all writers know (including this one), the true secret of success is putting the seat of the pants in the seat of the chair, every day for a set number of hours.
It's like a job. What am I saying? It is a job! And to make the work more enjoyable, you'd be wise to make that writing
room as inviting and comfortable as possible. Which means, if bright colors will inspire you, by all means, go bright. In fact, given the subject of your project, you might even go for the idea artist Chuck Fischer expressed all over the walls of the writing room he designed for this year's Kips Bay Decorator Show House. A: You are right-on about white. It's almost always right, if a little monotonous walk into half the kitchens in this country, and you'll find cabinets painted white or some variation thereof. OK, that makes sense on the one hand: white signals clean. It also reflects light and creates the illusion that your space is larger than it really is. On the other hand, white can look sterile, boring, been-there-done-that. Which is why top kitchen designers advocate mixing colors when it comes to the center work island. That's especially true when you're dealing with a large space, says Tad Troilo, a CKD

Two other ideas to, ahem, plagiarize for your own writing room: the simple desk set-up this room means business! "Nick is one of the most versatile producers I know ... taking everything from house to drum and bass to moombahton and putting his own forward-thinking spin on it. Not genre bound, just music bound." Skrillex In his own words, Nick Thayer might be best described as "the musical equivalent of putting seven glowsticks in a blender". As renowned for uninhibited and unashamedly eclectic DJ sets as he is for impeccable production, Nicks cut-loose mentality is his trademark both in the club and in the studio. I dont care about genres. Good music is good music, he says. You could put this unbound attitude down to his classically trained background, his stint in grunge and funk bands or even his lifelong love of hair rock. Whatever it is, one things certain: Nick Thayer was made for this. A hugely successful AV show in conjunction with visual artist sevenmilligram is another very special trick up Nick's sleeve. This show is like no other; it's a complete assault on the senses and needs to be seen to be believed. Following on from his 2010 album Just Let It Go - which was nominated for Best Electronic Album at the Australian Independent Music Awards then in 2012 Nick signed to Skrillex's OWSLA label with the Like Boom EP . The result is worth the wait; showing scant regard for genres or tempos, or even accepted notions of what club music should be, it promises to rip sound systems apart. If thats not enough for you wait for 2013

Media tour reveals new rides, new tech, even new romance
His team owner Rick Hendrick said hes not concerned and is waiting to sign a backer with the best longterm prospects. Hendrick also announced that his youngest driver, Chase Elliott, will run five ARCA and nine Camping World Truck Series races under the Hendrick banner. Elliott, the 17-year-old son of former Sprint Cup champion Bill Elliott, is in position to take over one of Hendricks four Cup cars, if and when one of the current drivers retires. Jeff Gordon, at age 41, appears the most likely candidate for retirement at some point in the not-too-distant future. He talked about his plans last week, telling reporters that he doesnt intend to compete into his 50s as many of his peers have done. NASCAR officials discussed a new track-drying system that is billed as quicker than the keroseneburning jet dryers now in use and more environmentally friendly. Continues on page 19
sors joining the sport. Hertz was among them, announcing that it was teaming with Penske Racing to back cars in both the Cup and Nationwide Series. Cessna also announced that it would be sponsoring Jamie McMurrays No. 1 Chevrolet at Ganassi Racing for 10 races this season, joining McDonalds, Dr. Pepper and Bass Pro Shops. There also was confirmation that the sports most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr., has 13 unsponsored races at this point.

ASCARs annual media tour, held each year in Charlotte, N.C. prior to the start of Speedweeks in Daytona, usually generates off-season news as teams and NASCAR wait for the tour to make any official announcements concerning the upcoming season. This years tour, held last week, was no different, except that some of the biggest news came the day after the tour ended when Danica Patrick and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. confirmed to the Associated Press that they were dating each other. It had been rumored for weeks that Patrick, who announced last fall that she was divorcing her husband, Paul Hospenthal, and Stenhouse, the two-time and defending Nationwide Series champion, were romantically involved. Stenhouse, who will face Patrick in the Sprint Cup circuits Rookie of the Year con-
test this season, was questioned about their relationship during the media tour but offered little insight. The two spoke with the AP the next day and insisted that their off-track relationship wont affect the way they race each other on the track. Stenhouse, 25, is moving up to Cup to drive the No. 17 Ford at Roush Fenway Racing. Patrick, 30, will drive the No. 10 Chevrolet for StewartHaas Racing. On the tour, Joe Gibbs Racing announced that it had signed Kyle Busch to a long-term contract extension. Gibbs also will field the No. 54 Toyota in the Nationwide Series with Busch as its primary driver. Busch, for the most part, raced his own car in the Nationwide Series last year, but without the success hes had in Gibbs cars in the past. This is a big deal for us, JGR President J.D. Gibbs said. fairly low ground clearance, its best to keep the RDX on the road. Though the new Acura RDX loses some sporty flavor in terms of handling capabilities, it gains significantly more in the way of ride refinement, cabin ambience and overall luxury features. And that is what will make the new RDX capture a broader audience.

During the NASCAR media tour stop at Richard Childress Racing in Welcome, N.C., team owner Richard Childress confirmed that Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 29 Chevrolet, indeed is leaving after this year to drive a fourth car at Stewart-Haas Racing. Childress told reporters that Harvick will do well over there at Stewart-Haas, and RCR will keep going and moving forward. Childress grandson Austin Dillon, now a fulltime Nationwide Series driver, is set to run several Cup races this season and is viewed as a likely replacement for Harvick.

Continued from page 17 Drying the track after a rain has been a painfully slow process in the past, as the process can take up to two hours at most tracks, making for a long wait for fans at the track and watching on TV. The goal is to improve it by 80 percent, NASCAR chairman Brian France said. So that means if were drying Daytona off, where it usually took two and a half hours, we get it down to 30 minutes. And France said that with the new system theyre close to meeting his goal.
Were going to be able to dry Martinsville off in 15 minutes, he said. Its going to be a spectacular thing, and all auto racing will benefit from this as we go down the road. The new system, which NASCAR owns the rights to, relies on compressed air and heat, plus some vacuuming, to dry the track. The old jet dryers, supplied by the tracks, used the heat from jet engines to blow water off the track as well as dry it. NASCAR officials also praised the work that has been done on the Generation 6 race car that will make its competitive debut next month at Daytona International Speedway. The collaborative efforts between the manufacturers, teams and NASCAR has been unparalleled in my 34-plus years in the sport, said NASCARs vice president for competition Robin Pemberton. Weve been highly encouraged by the results that weve seen at the tests at Daytona and Charlotte earlier this month, and are optimistic that not only will the cars look great, we believe they will race great I really believe were going to see some of the most competitive, intense and exciting racing that weve seen in quite some time.
