The neighborhoods, suburbs, and restaurants of Atlanta are as diverse as the city's population. Atlanta remains one of the fastest growing metro areas in the country, and it's for good reason. If you venture around Atlanta and the metro area, though, you'll discover all sorts of gems that don't feel like the American South. If you're looking to travel without leaving town, here are my picks for the top five places in Atlanta that make you feel like you're in another part of the world.

Helen, Georgia, can make visitors

Nancy's Pizza Nancy's may be located in the heart of Buckhead in the commercial center of Atlanta, but when you step inside, you immediately feel like you've been transported to the Windy City. Nancy's is a slice of Chicago, literally, right in Atlanta. Those who have never experienced real Chicago deep-dish stuffed pizza don't know what they are missing. Nancy's serves it up every day and has won numerous awards for the "Best Pizza" in both Chicago and Atlanta. The owners of Nancy's learned their trade in Chicago, and thankfully, they have brought it south. Nancy's Pizza is located at 3167 Peachtree Road NE in Atlanta.

Hae Woon Dae At one time, Hae Woon Dae was the best kept secret in Atlanta. Not anymore. This authentic Korean restaurant is one of the most popular stops on Buford Highway's restaurant row. From the decor to the service and, of course, the food, Hae Woon Dae not only makes you feel like you're in Korea, but also like you don't want to leave. It's fun cooking your meats on little grills, and the smells and tastes you can generate are usually only found in Asia. One of the best restaurants in Atlanta, and one of the best Korean joints this side of Seoul.

Hae Woon Dae is located at 5805 Buford Highway in Doraville. Helen, Georgia Located just north of the metro Atlanta area, you will find the city of Helen. Helen is not your typical Southern city. It's an exact replica of a Bavarian village in the Alps. The North Georgia Mountains provide the backdrop and add to the setting of shops, cobblestone streets, and German restaurants and cafes. If there was a little snow in the mountains, you would truly feel like you were in Bavaria. Helen is a can't-miss when in the state of Georgia, especially in October, when you can compare Helen's Oktoberfest to any fest in Germany. Helen is located directly north of Atlanta, a little over one hour away. Nuevo Laredo Cantina The Atanta area has a large and vibrant Mexican population, so it's only fitting that various parts of Atlanta make you feel like you could be in Mexico. Parts of the city of Roswell and various stops along Buford Highway bring to mind parts of Mexico, but for authentic Mexican food, Nuevo Laredo Cantina is the place. Even a friend of mine from California who's a Mexican food snob loves this place. Nuevo makes fish and lobster tacos like they do south of the border, and their specialty is the traditional Mexican dish of chicken mole. Nuevo Laredo Cantina is located 1495 Chattahoochee Ave. NW in Atlanta. Buford Highway Farmers Market

Picture yourself in any big city in the world. Each one has a central market or shopping area where you can get all the local produce, meats, and spices that the residents and restaurants need to survive. Atlanta has just a place that can make you feel like you are in Shanghai, Paris, or Buenos Aires. It's the Buford Highway Farmers Market, and it's basically 100,000 square feet of everything from fruits and vegetables to fresh fish and items only found internationally. Depending on where you stand in the market, you feel transported to different areas of the world. For example, in the banana aisle, there are sometimes 50 varieties of bananas from all over the world. This place may be overkill to some, but to serious foodies, it's one-stop shopping. The Buford Highway Farmers Market is located at 5600 Buford Highway NE in Doraville. It's open seven days a week. What Atlanta-area locations can you recommend that make visitors feel like they've stepped off a plane into a different place? Rick Limpert is based in Atlanta and has lived there for 22 years. I got my first tattoo in Helen, GA. I live about 45 minutes away in a small town in NC. It's always cool to see part of your home area in the media. I also got to see some of my area on the show Moonshiners. Mark and Jeff live and operate like, less than 30 minutes from my house. It's weird seeing... More

Helen, GA? Tacky, fake, overpriced, made in China. It used to be somewhat fun but in the past ten years they just reached a new level of tacky and fake. You'd be better off visiting Dahlonega with its genuine historical square and gold museum.

Helen used to be great. Even the Christmas store looked as if it were over run and going out of business about a year ago. The restaurant right on the river is pretty good, but the stores are weak.
