DEFINITIONS

Within t h i s specification, t h e following definitions a p p l y .

3.1

Control System Voltage Supply

The DC voltage s u p p l y used to power the vehicle control equipment. This supply may be derived from a vehicle b a t t e r y . Equipment used to derive t h i s s u p p l y may include battery c h a r g e r s , a u x i l l a r y i n v e r t e r s a n d motor a l t e r n a t o r or motor generator sets with associated electronic r e g u l a t o r s , which in general are non-receptive. Where the control system voltage supply is derived from a b a t t e r y , the nominal control system voltage s h a l l be the normal voltage of t h e battery on c h a r g e . When no battery is f i t t e d , t h e nominal control system voltage s h a l l be the normal controlled level of t h a t voltage. For t h e purpose of t h i s specification, electronic equipment used t o derive the control system voltage s u p p l y . energised from some other power source, s h a l l be subject to the s u r g e and t r a n s i e n t immunity requirements of t h i s specification a s i f i t were energised from t h e control system voltage s u p p l y . Such equipment will include, for example, electronic voltage frequency r e g u l a t o r s energised directly from a l t e r n a t o r outputs. and

3.2

Vehicle Wiring
Vehicle wiring s h a l l include a l l wiring- which c a n be connected to the control system voltage sup'ply, wherever located. a n d all other electronic wiring e x t e r n a l to equipment housings provided by t h e electronic equipment s u p p l i e r .

3.3

Surge
An e l e c t r i c a l d i s t u r b a n c e to t h e control system voltage s u p p l y caused by equipment controlling t h a t supply. A s u r g e w i l l occur as a n i n c r e a s e i n t h e level of t h e control system voltage a n d may h a v e a source impedance approaching zero.

3.4

Transient
An
e l e c t r i c a l d i s t u r b a n c e produced by t h e normal operation of equipment within t h e vehicle, caused generally by t h e d i s c h a r g e of energy when i n d u c t i v e c i r c u i t s a r e switched.

BRB/LU Ltd/RIA SPECIFICATION NO. 12: 1991

A t r a n s i e n t may be present e i t h e r on the control system v o l t a g e s u p p l y , on wiring connected d i r e c t l y to switched i n d u c t i v e c i r c u i t s or coupled e l e c t r o s t a t i c a l l y o r electromagnelically from such w i r i n g i n t o other wiring. A t r a n s i e n t may be of e i t h e r p o l a r i t y . The effective v a l u e of t h e source impedance of a t r a n s i e n t will depend upon t h e manner of its generation a n d coupling but will, i n many circumstances, be low.
