Adair-Casey Library Mimio Educational Grant Adair-Casey Library Mimio Educational Grant Provided by Value Inspired Products & Services Project Abstract This proposal involves a collaborative effort between the media specialist, the technology coordinators, and the district administration to secure technology resources for the elementary and high school libraries. This grant proposal is directed to V.i.P.S. (Value Inspired Products & Services, n.d.), an education retailer based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The company is a retailer for the DYMO/Mimio systems and provides educational grants to help local schools acquire Mimio technology. The link to the Mimio Educational Grant Application may be found at https://docs.google.com/open?id=15LY6Sv18Xj8ZBPd5CuXNu22RzMXcM6lcutBH7LluuX9F2w1mCIyLXgHaWh_. The grant will be used to add technological equipment to the Adair-Casey elementary and high school libraries. The funding will provide MimioTeach Interactive Systems, MimioPad Wireless Tablets, and MimioView Document Cameras for each library. In addition, the funding will also provide a MimioVote Assessment System with 32 handsets. This system will be shared between the two libraries. The MimioTeach Interactive Whiteboard System mounts on any existing whiteboard and makes the whiteboard interactive (Mimio, 2012). The MimioTeach Interactive System will be useful because both libraries have whiteboards that can be made interactive without replacing the existing whiteboards. These materials will benefit students during library skills classes. In addition, the technology will benefit teachers who can borrow the equipment for use in their own classrooms. Finally, many professional development activities and district meetings are held in the library. The new equipment will benefit presenters at those meetings.

Adair-Casey Library Mimio Educational Grant The estimated cost for these materials is $5000. The materials will be purchased in July 2012, and the materials will be installed and tested in July and August 2012. The early installation and testing will ensure that all equipment is ready for use at the beginning of the 2012-13 academic year.

Statement of the Problem The goal of this proposal is to provide updated technology resources for the elementary and high school libraries in the district that are similar to the technologies that are available in other classrooms within the district. Interactive whiteboards will allow the media specialist and the students to digitally capture the on-screen information and allow interaction with that information (Smaldino, Lowther, & Russell, 2012). The need for updated technology is great with the 1:1 initiative for Apple laptop computers in grades 7-12 for the upcoming 2012-13 school year. In addition, the elementary school will see a large increase in the number of laptop computers available for student with the addition of all of the computer labs that are no longer needed in the high school. It is important that the media centers have the equipment to fully utilize available technologies and help students develop technology literacy skills. Interactive whiteboards allow instructors to run software programs, surf the Web, review documents, and toggle between items as you would on a desktop computer (Smaldino et al., 2012, p. 268). In addition, interactive whiteboards increase student interactivity and participation and increase the efficiency and professionalism of multimedia delivery (Smaldino et al., 2012, p. 269). Document cameras are an important component of multimedia instruction. Document cameras are useful because any sort of visual can be placed on the stage to be displayed for viewing by the entire group of learners (Smaldino et al., 2012, p. 188). Personal

Adair-Casey Library Mimio Educational Grant Response Systems, such as the MimioVote Assessment System, will also allow instructors to monitor individual student responses during practice exercises or assessments (Smaldino, et al., 2012). In addition the MimioVote Assessment System will collect and graphically display student answers to teacher questions (Smaldino et al., 2012, p. 6). The MimioVote Assessment System provides immediate feedback that allows instructors to guide the pace and direction of a discussion and to make instructional decisions to meet student learning needs (Smaldino et al., 2012, p. 7). Project Description Goal, Outcomes, and Standards The goal of this grant is to secure updated technological equipment for the elementary and high school libraries in the Adair-Casey school district. Students will be able to create and participate in a variety of interactive presentations and assessments with the addition of Mimio technology in the elementary and high school libraries. Students in the elementary grades will benefit from the technology because the media specialist will be able to provide interactive instruction in technology literacy skills such as evaluating websites, citing sources, using online databases, and creating presentations. Students in junior high and high school will benefit from this technology because they will be able to create interactive presentations, podcasts, videos, and slide shows using the new technology. The media specialist will be required to utilize the new equipment in at least two instructional activities each week throughout the school year. The district administration will examine lesson plans submitted by the media specialist for evidence of integrating interactive technology in at least two lessons each week. In addition, the media specialist will help students in each class create at least one interactive presentation during the school year. Students

Adair-Casey Library Mimio Educational Grant finished products, such as PowerPoint presentations, podcasts, slide shows, and videos will be examined as evidence of utilization of the interactive technologies. The improved technologies in the elementary and high school libraries will assist the media specialist in addressing Technology Literacy standards as identified by the Iowa Department of Education (Iowa Department of Education, 2011). Use technology to create projects, identify patterns, and make predictions. Use interactive technologies in a collaborative group to produce digital presentations or products in a curricular area. Utilize digital tools and resources to investigate real-world issues, answer questions, or solve problems. Demonstrate critical thinking skills using appropriate tools and resources to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions. Understand and practice appropriate and safe uses of technology. Understand basic technology hardware and software and their application.

The addition of new technologies will assist the media specialist in meeting National Educational Technology Standards for students (International Society for Technology in Education, 2007). Communication and Collaboration: Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Digital Citizenship: Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior.

Adair-Casey Library Mimio Educational Grant Technology Operations and Concepts: Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations. In addition, the technology will also meet National Educational Technology Standards for teachers (International Society for Technology in Education, 2008). Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments: Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS-S. Model Digital-Age Working and Learning: Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership: Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources. Target Population The Adair-Casey Community School District is a small, rural school district located in west central Iowa that serves the residents of Adair and Casey as well as rural residents in Adair, Guthrie, and Audubon counties. The economy is based mainly on agriculture. The district has a total enrollment of 355 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. Adair-Casey Library Mimio Educational Grant The Adair-Casey Community School District is housed in one building serving preschool through twelfth grades. The library in the elementary wing of the building has one computer, a projector, tables, chairs, a teachers desk, and a whiteboard. The library in the junior high/high school wing of the building includes tables, chairs, a teachers desk, a laptop computer, a projector, and a whiteboard. Student computers have been removed from the high school library and moved to the elementary computer labs because of the 1:1 laptop initiative in the junior high and high school for the upcoming school year. However, both libraries lack other forms of technology. This grant seeks to purchase document cameras, interactive whiteboards, wireless tablets, and a student response system to make the facilities truly interactive. The MimoTeach Interactive System includes MimioStudio software, a MimioTeach bar and stylus, a MimioHub wireless receiver, a USB micro-B cable (16 ft.), 5 V 500 mA USB power supply, and a magnetic mounting bracket (Mimio, 2012, MimoTeach Interactive Whiteboard Details).

11

Adair-Casey Library Mimio Educational Grant The system requirements for using MimioStudio Interactive software with a Macintosh computer are: Mac 10.5, 10.6 or 10.7 Intel processors, 1 GHz Mac 10.5, 10.6 or 10.7 512 MB RAM minimum (1 GB recommended) 350 MB Disk space (English), 900 MB (Multi-language) CD/DVD ROM drive or Internet connection (Mimio, 2012, MimioStudio Interactive software). Selection Justification MimioTeach Interactive System: The Mimio system allows any existing whiteboard to be turned into an interactive whiteboard. According to Marzano (2009), interactive whiteboards have great potential as a tool to enhance pedagogical practices in the classroom and ultimately improve student achievement (para. 20). In addition, using whiteboards creates a faster pace in the classroom, enhancing interaction between teachers and students (Whiteboards, 2007, para. 1). An added benefit comes from the students physical interaction with the whiteboard. The tactile aspect of whiteboards makes them good for elementary students generally and special needs students specifically (Maryland, 2009, p.4). Interactive whiteboards are useful for creating digital images of the information on the board (Smaldino et al., 2012). This information can be downloaded and distributed to absent students. In addition, the information can be saved for later use. This would be an important feature as each grade comes to the library for class once per week. The media specialist will be able to continue the previous lesson by accessing information from the interactive whiteboard. Purchasing the MimioTeach Interactive System is more cost effective than purchasing an interactive whiteboard. The cost of each SMART Board 640 is $1,099 (Touchboards, 2012), while the MimioTeach Interactive System costs only $799

12

Adair-Casey Library Mimio Educational Grant per system (DYMO/Mimio, 2012). In addition, the school already owns the Mimi Studio software. MimioPad Wireless Tablet: The MimioPad Wireless Tablet is another component of the overall system. The wireless tablet allows the instructor to remotely write on the board and manipulate the tools from anywhere in the classroom. This tool is used to create an effective presentation because it is important to face the class, make eye contact with the students, and speak to the class rather than to the board (Smaldino et al., 2012). The MimioPad Wireless Tablet will allow the media specialist to teach from anywhere in the room without blocking the view of the students. This will also allow the teacher to maintain better classroom management. The media specialist will be able to circulate throughout the room and ensure that all learners are actively engaged in the lessons. MimioView Document Camera: The MimioView Document Camera will allow the media specialist to display documents, images, and objects on the interactive whiteboard (Smaldino et al., 2012). The ability to display documents will allow all students to view things simultaneously. The libraries currently utilize overhead projectors to display information. The document cameras will allow the media specialist to display more information than the overhead projector. Books, photographs, worksheets, and objects can be projected using the document camera while the overhead projector can only display transparencies. In addition, the document camera will save time as the media specialist will no longer have to prepare transparencies of printed information. MimioVote Assessment System with 32 Handsets:

13

Adair-Casey Library Mimio Educational Grant The MimioVote Assessment System will allow the media specialist to prepare interactive assessments for the students. Quizzes can be administered and scored simultaneously. This system provides instant feedback to students and the teacher. Marzano (2009) states that the use of handheld voting devices led to a 26 percentile point gain in student achievement (para. 5). Students have their own handsets that will record their responses. Thirty-two handsets should be enough to allow one for each student in most classes. The district technology coordinator is able to provide maintenance and technical troubleshooting support. Repair costs will be taken from the districts technology budget. Evaluation Plan The media specialist will be required to incorporate interactive technology into instructional activities at least twice weekly. The district principal will assess the utilization of interactive technology by examining the media specialists lesson plans and tracking the number of times Mimio interactive technologies are used during instruction. Examples of instructional activities using interactive technology include teacher-created interactive presentations, podcasts, videos, and MimioVote assessments. The media specialist will be required to assist students in each grade in creating at least one interactive project throughout the school year. Students finished products will be assessed using various rubrics and performance checklists. Scores of 80% or higher on the rubric and performance checklists will demonstrate proficiency with the given technology. Examples include student-created presentations, podcasts, slide shows, and videos. The principal can also assess the utilization of the new technologies by noting the students emerging technological literacy skills and familiarity with the use of the Mimio equipment. Conclusion

14

Adair-Casey Library Mimio Educational Grant The addition of the MimioTeach Interactive System, MimioPad Wireless Tablet, MimioView Document Cameras, and MimioVote Assessment System will enhance the learning opportunities for the students of the Adair-Casey Community School District. The technology will help students gain technology literacy skills and prepare them for life as 21st century learners.
